The Brass Teapot (2012)

Surprisingly fun movie about a teapot that dispenses cash in exchange for pain. Apparently reviews are pretty poor (26% rating on RT per Wiki) but I enjoyed it, even if it was a bit formulaic and predictable. Fun/random supporting roles by Rory from Gilmore Girls, Maeby from Arrested Development, Mike Yanagita from Fargo, and a guy who I swore was Seth Meyers but apparently wasn't. But the most surprising bit of casting was the male lead, Michael Angarano, who it turns out was one of the finalists for little Anakin Skywalker. Just more proof that George made the wrong call. *sigh*

Six Hasidic Jews out of eight.

You are making fun of them in this comment and that is as much a slur as no homo.

How come it's okay to make fun of jewish people but not gays.  I guess because you like gays but hate the jews so everyone has to agree with you and you will use your power as a mod to force everyone to agree with your hate speech.

So what, there were Jews who betrayed their own kind to the Nazis and you still haven't answered the question as to what give you the right to make fun of other people and no one else has that right?

What makes you so divine that you are so sure your views are the one and only absolute right and everyone who doesn't agree with you has to be evil and deserves to be censored.

If your saying that someone else's post offends you is a good enough reason for it to be censored unless you are saying you are better then every other person on earth then if someone says your post offends them then that should be a good enough reason for your post to be censored.  if you see yourself as better then other people you shouldn't be enforcing the rules.

That is nothing more then a point of simple logic in favor of fair play.

Unless of course you are admitting that this forum has no rules beyond your own will and you are forcing everyone to agree with you. In which case you can't make any arguments in favor of free speech just in favor of you staying in power. Still remember that at some point you could be out of power and when that day comes then you can't complain if the people in power treat you the same way you have treat other people when you were in power.

Either all offensive speech has to be banned or none can.

Did anyone who is gay even say they were offended by the no homo comment?  Because if they did you have not mentioned it, it seems like you took offense for them as an excuse to throw your weight around and make sure everyone here understands that you are lord and master and no one can question you.

You are a bully, nothing more.  Don't try to hide behind some noble ideal. You enjoy using power for it's own sake and seeing people forced to bend to your will. Don't insult any of us by expecting us to believe that it is anything beyond that.

So, I wasn't the one taking offense and how is that a Jewish stereotype.

It's a saying.  When someone is being short sighted we say that they can't look beyond their own nose because as humans our nose is the only feature on our faces we can see without a mirror. It means you are not willing to look beyond yourself.

Good night, now I am having to give you lectures on how basic English works.

You really are the stereotypical dumb bully who just pushes people around because that is all he is good at.  This is just getting sad.

Show me where I made fun of anyone.  And you're an asshole for using that Nazi comparison.

As for the rest, show me where I threw my weight around on this forum.  I have no say in matters here.

Editing a user's post so people can not judge them for themselves in context but then complaining about other people finding your post offensive is by it's very definition throwing your weight around.

I cited a historical example of how just because some belongs to a racial group doesn't mean that they have the best interest of that group in their minds or they even like the group. People can't control who they are when they are born. It was a historic example and the fact that it involved Nazis means nothing.  I could make the same point by pointing out that on plantations in the American South certain slaves where trusted to watch over slaves and keep them from escaping, that is why such a large portion of the white population was able to leave and devote themselves full time to the war effort. If we are not allowed to bring historical fact into this then what are we allowed to cite as example and proof of human nature.  If bringing up Nazis or the slave culture of the South for any reason is not allowed then we can also not talk about the evil of those two movements. Do we really want to leaving in that world?  We can not and should not pick and choose what lessons we learn from the past. if we want to be better in the future then we have to study all the facts and listen to all the lessons they can teach us not just about the events but about human nature in general.  If we don't then we are committing the real crime by refusing to honor the dead and learn from them. History is as much about examining your own soul as it is about examining the events of the past.

I should have said normally see or are aware of since we not seem to notice those features.  Then again I did say "on our faces" and eyelashes are part of the eyes and the tongue can only be seen if we stick it out and is not on the face.

I apologize for the confusion.

You accused me of throwing my weight around here on ot.com.  The incident did not occur here and I have no weight here to throw.

I am done responding because it is clear you are hearing what you want to hear rather than what was actually said.

To try and mix it up a bit while coming back to the topic of movies, now that Frink has mentioned his heritage, I'd like to ask him what he thought of Judd Hirsch in "Independence Day". I've heard comments about his character... would you agree in saying that he was... a bit over the top, shall we say?

I barely remember that piece of garbage movie, I didn't even remember that character being in it.

Well, here's a clip to refresh your memory:

Judd enters around 40 seconds in.

Considering Dean Devlin's Jewish on his father's side, I don't think Hirsch's character was meant to be a Jewish caricature. He was probably meant to be a positive portrayal of Jewry, but Devlin's less than stellar writing skewed that.

There's self hating jews, though, as I'm sure you know this already.

I don't know, he looks and sounds very stereotypical. He's practically Watto. Of course, the difference is Watto is portrayed as greedy, Julius looks more goofy than anything.

This is another quote from the movie:

If I knew I was going to meet the president, I would have worn a tie. I mean, look at me. I look like a schlemiel.

I still chock this up to lacklustre writing than any real anti-semitism, though. Devlin's never been great at writing characters of any ethnicity.

As for Watto, I've always seen him more as Italian than Jewish. ;-)

I don't really see the problem with this scene. It's just a guy leading a prayer and making a joke. If the character was changed to a Christian, a Muslim, a Hindu, a Wiccan, etc. but the rest stayed the same, would it be considered an offensive portrayal of any of those groups? I doubt it.

Independence Day was a dumb, dumb movie.

Agreed. Still, it's an enjoyably dumb movie.
