So no one has any suggestions on a good BD player? seems this thread is dead.

FWIW I'm loving my Sony BDP-S790.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I have 2 completely different Panasonic BD players, one is 2 years old and the other 3 years old.  Both are awesome and I've never had any problems with them.  All I did was read up on several reviews and they didn't let me down.  : )

I second the Panasonics. I have two, and they handle everything I throw at them. And the zoom feature for old non anamorphic DVD's is a plus.

The only reason I want to replace the older one in the living room is I can hear the fan noise during quiet passages in a movie. Newer players thankfully don't have fans anymore.

Nope, can't help you with this one.

Is where anyway I can donate $$ helping you get a new BD player.

Any members here have this Rudolph DVD?

I've got it. (Just dug it out to check.) Is there something on it they dropped in later releases?

Well it seems there is an audio glitch on the song "Silver and Gold" it skips over 1 word, and I am reading there is some color errors, with Santas Elves, and Yukons coat is back to blue but supposedly there are a few frames where it still shows greenish, I am actually still trying to look into all this to make sure, I was hoping some here may know and can offer up some assistance.

That DVD according to members at blu-ray.com has the correct audio for the film, I thought I had it but still have not found it, I also want to spin my 50th BD to see/hear some of this myself, this is such a classic film that it deserves to be correct, well at least to me anyways.

Thanks

I don't know yet, would need a little more help then just 1 lol, plus I am still trying to figure out what brand to go with, I may just stick with Panasonic, I don't need a top of the line but do not want the bottom player either lol, I was actually starting to look into the Panasonic DMP-BDT360 unless there are recommendations for something different.

T1 is done and ready to share, T2 is authored and sitting on my drive ready to burn just as soon as I can test with a BD player, so I am already a week or so behind and growing, so just as soon as I can test T2 and give it a green light on the authoring and such, then these 2 will release together, still hoping for a Christmas release but we will see, our third 2-Disc project probably will not make it though.

Thanks for the offer by the way, I do appreciate it very much.

I have this version of the DVD:

Along with this version of the Blu Ray from the original christmas classics boxset released in 2010 I think:

I've never bothered to seek out to see if the error is present on both/either, but if you're interested in either version let me know.  As for your request for a blu ray player earlier... I still recommend a PS3. Guaranteed updates, 3d compatibility, the ability to stream, change backgrounds/themes, Tons of free memory and still pretty quick make the slightly higher cost still worth it for me.

Did any of the later releases keep the restored footage that hadn't been seen in decades since the original broadcasts? I thought I read a review that complained about that several years ago, but can't find it now.

Rudolph was released on Laserdisc, so that might be a better audio source. It's probably the same as the really old VHS I once had, unrestored, and the altered version most of us grew up watching.

Some people complain about ads on Panasonic BD players when utilizing streaming content, but as far as a bullet proof tried and true player... strictly speaking to the mechanism and durability, the Panasonic players have held up better than any I've used.  I started with the very first Samsung BD player and I've seen a lot of players in action since.  Many of my friends have had bad luck with Sony and Samsung.  When I steered them to Panasonic, it was smooth sailing ever since.  Some of these Panasonic players I'm seeing in action and still going strong are now 4 or 5 years old with heavy use.  Panasonic builds their stuff to last.  Even if you drill it, you'll still get a longer life than most other players.

So what are the best Panasonic players out now, or coming soon? I just wish Panasonic still supported the 3D checkerboard output for my Mits Diamond Series 65" and still had dual HDMI.

*edit, regarding Rudolph I am still looking into it, but it is nice to know that there are some other sources if needed, don't know about that LD though, is it Rudolph cartoon or this version? would be nice to get a bit perfect rip of that PCM though.

If I were going to buy a brand new Panasonic today, this is the one I'd get based on performance reviews as a player, because I play discs.  If you stream a lot of content, other players have less ads.  I don't give a damn about that stuff.  I want a solid player to play discs often.

I'm sure others will have suggestions.

lol I do not give a damn about that shit either, I was looking at this one,

Panasonic DMP-BDT360

but I will definitely look at the model you linked to as well, I am open and am going to need one real fast to get these BD's tested and out the door fro everyone.

Thanks

Don't let the cover art fool you, it's the Rakin/Bass version. :)

I don't think any of the disc releases have ever used seamless branching to allow you to watch the original broadcast version, it's been a hybrid edit since the first restoration. That would be another thing to try if it hasn't already been done.

Where can we get this? also do you have the LD? if so can you do a rip?

AFAIK, the DVD I have has all the footage. I don't know about the later releases.

I don't have that LD. But I'm thinking it over.

I've done some tests with a standalone CD recorder I've bought several months ago, but haven't verified that the results are bit perfect yet. What I've ripped so far sounds identical the Laserdisc though.

Actually strictly speaking the PS4 you have will be the most fussy with burnt media by far, if it plays on that it will play on any working standalone

The Rudolph LD is almost certainly the 1965 edit with "Fame and Fortune."

The original Sony DVD does have the "hybrid" 1998 restoration. I'm not sure if any of the restored footage was left out of subsequent home releases. What I do know is that the more recent TV airings took some of the restored scenes back out, as well as changing the Rudolph/Hermey duet to a bizarre Frankenstein version with the original song audio put to the "Fame and Fortune" visuals.

Also, the original end credits are missing from all official releases, to my knowledge. The original ending didn't actually show Santa pick up the Misfit Toys and deliver them - that was another 1965 addition, due to viewers sending letters to GE wanting to know what happened to them . (Most of the deleted footage that was reinstated in '98 was, I believe, cut back in 1965 to make room for the new ending.)

At least one black and white 16mm print of the true original 1964 version exists in private hands, and the clips of the original opening/closing/GE commercials are all on a YouTube, but a color version of the original ending apparently doesn't exist. The original negative has all the stuff that was added back in for the restoration...except for the original ending.

Hi Dark_Jedi,

The only Blu-ray player I can suggest would be an Oppo. Many home theater enthusiasts regard them as the best one can buy, but they are VERY expensive! I’m happy with my PS3 and PS4, like you, but I’ve always heard people rave about Oppos. You might want to check if there are any Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, etc. Hope this helps! :)

What can you get a Wookiee for (Life Day) Christmas when he already owns a comb?

Yea I have read about these as well and have had OPPO DVD players in the past, but as you said they are very expensive and I would definitely need help on obtaining one of those units, would definitely need donations help but I do not see this happening so I need to look at way less expensive payers lol.

Thanks, I was wondering when someone would mention these high priced babies lol

Wow, the cheapest one is this one,
