although nobody really knows or remembers what the original look of the film is
The 35mm IB Technicolor prints come pretty close by definition, so I wouldn't say nobody.
But no one here has seen it in it's entirety.
We have a few screen shots from the screening in Baltimore....and even then you have to take into account the contrast/exposures and settings of the camera used to take those photos.
The only way we could really know is if it is run side by side(with the DCP)under the same conditions.
Screen shots from one source used against screen shots from a different source is not reliable.
I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

Hey dude....I can get more of a kick from watching that 1982 VHS tape than watching the 2011 blu ray..........but I will still acknowledge that the 2011 bLu ray is superior in technical quality.

That's not true at all. I can think of at least four members here who either own or have seen multiple *complete* 35mm IB Technicolor prints.
AMPS exists for a reason.

Fair enough. Although I find it a bit odd that, given that you would prefer the original version, that you aren't even curious to see Harmy's version. Most of it uses the blu ray as its base, and even improve on it because of the color palette and soundtrack.

I was referring explicitly to the IB 35mm print that surfaced in Baltimore.
Hence the reference to "seen IT in IT's entirety".
Now if that same print has re-surfaced else-where(or if members here were present at that screening) then fair enough....I'll take it back.
As for members here actually owning one of these rare---not many were made in the first place---(2 have already been bagged by Lucas and whoever has the senator print ) IB prints then I would like to see some proof of those claims.
Also if these members are using nothing more than their memories to certify the quality and look of a 35mm print(be it Delux or Technicolor) then I would personally take their claims with a pinch of salt.
I saw Star Wars in 1981(back to back with Empire) and 1983( as part of a triple bill with ESB and ROTJ) and I can't remember exactly how it looked other than it looked big!

I'm surprised anyone who's been here this long could have missed out on these developments, but I guess if you're actively avoiding fan preservations, you'd miss a lot of what's going on here. FWIW, every claim of IB print ownership has been quite thoroughly backed up already, although the legal gray area of print ownership does mean it's not trumpeted loudly enough for everyone on the planet to hear. Feel free to keep pretending it's not true if that suits your fancy.

It takes less effort to aquire the proof than it does to aquire a projector.
Nice try, Mr. Lucas. ;)

Fan edits don't interest me.
It's funny, I've never considered Harmy's DE a fan-edit. It has always seemed more like a technical attempt to undo George's fan-edit... a reconstruction / restoration using whatever elements of the original film are available.
By contrast, Adywan's would be a fan-edit because it deliberately attempts to "improve" the movie with elements or edits that never were part of any official edition.

When I ask Conheim if there’s a Honus Wagner card of film prints, he names the British Star Wars, processed in Technicolor. It doesn’t fade, he says. “They were still using that process in England up to 1977 or so. Those are really sought after, because even the original negative has faded.” A Technicolor print of Vertigo is also valuable. “I saw one sell for $10,000 two or three years ago.I’ve never seen a Star Wars British version for sale. I know two people who have them. One guy is so freaked out it’s going to be a disappointment he’s never opened the box it came in. I’ve been standing in front of the box with him many times, he’s like, ‘I’ll get there.'”

It's definitely a semantics thing. I consider Harmy's to be a fan restoration, which is a subset of fan edit in my book. I also consider the Special Editions to be a fan edit, just one that's neither as enjoyable nor as well done as Harmy's.

Yes, we're very lucky to have so many members with access to these prints. We already knew that, but it's good to hear you say it, even if using someone else's words (and, FWIW, the prices have gone up since your quote).

I would have to disagree with the definition of the special edition as constituting a fan edit.
Harmy did not work on the original production of star wars in 1976....by all accounts....he was not even born!
Lucas,Muren,Hart(who cut the negative on ESB and ROTJ) and Burrt were all involved in making those original flicks......and yeah they vandalized them in 1994-1997.....but they are not "fan editors".

Yeah I found that link as well as this one.....Richard Edlund confirming Star Wars were the IB prints ever made(at least that is the way I am interpreting it)
Complicated though it was, it was still quite cheaper than photochemical printing because it didn’t require silver, and though the cameras were shelved in the early 50’s, IB prints were made through the 70’s; Technicolor London made the final IB prints for Star Wars in 77-78.

You don't think they're fans of their own movies? That's harsh ;)
Well, actually, Lucas has recently said things that sound like he's no longer a fan of these films, but I think it's fair to assume he was once a fan of them.
Just kidding, mostly. I was pointing out that it's a matter of semantics, which means there's plenty of room for alternate interpretations. It's perfectly reasonable to say fan edits exclude edits done by the original production crew, I just don't buy into that.
I think putting the word "fan" in front of "fan edits" is often used as a way to marginalize/demean the quality of the work, when I feel we have plenty of examples of fan edits with notably better technical execution and fidelity to the spirit of the originals than edits done by the studios. And also because I don't think any particular post-release edit is any more legitimate than another. Neither the Special Editions nor Revisited are The Real Thing (although one of them is trying to pass itself off as such)--in my mind, who created them is irrelevant to that basic fact. For that reason, I do rather intentionally lump all post-release edits into the same bucket, for better or worse.
here's some comparisons demonstrating why I prefer GOUT over Blu-Ray.
See how there's a cool tinge to the blu-ray? See how the blu-ray ruins the lightsabers?
Picturing the images in motion helps.
Wonder if this points towards something other than the trailer being available to buy on iTunes... An annoucement of the OUT on blu (or download) perhaps?
https://mobile.twitter.com/justinlasalata/status/537646009334366208
Some guy from a fan site makes a cryptic remark tagged to the new movie title and we're somehow supposed to think the OUT might be coming out?
What am I missing here?
And especially who is Justin LaSata?
