I'm sure Ep7 will still have a lot of cgi in it. It'll simply be the way Abrams utilizes and combines physical stuff with digital that feels more true to the OT, I'm guessing.

The Ronto and Jedi Rocks don't feel true to the OT at all.

True, but he never mentioned them.

but he was responding to the claim that the SEs go against the approach being taken with TFA

I did. The SEs cgi is very intrusive.

What I'm trying to say is that Ep7 will doubtlessly contain a lot of cgi, but it will be used as a storytelling tool and not as an excuse for stuff like the ronto and jedi rocks.

To get this thread slightly back on topic, I'd like to point out that the final 2k digital production files for both AOTC and ROTS are more than likely still sitting on a server at Lucasfilm with multiple backup copies. It was mentioned on the official website back in 2011 that the blu-ray's were in fact newly transferred from the digital source rather than simply dumped from the existing hd transfers. The 35mm prints are by no means the best available sources for those movies.

Assuming it's not another generic, safe, corporate designed consumer product like Star Trek Into Cumberbatch.

What I meant was that Episode VII's CGI will be used appropriately, and not simply just to show off, which is all the SE's were. The SE's only goal was to shove as much CGI stuff on the screen as possible and ram it down our throats. For the Force Awakens I think they'll use CGI when appropriate, and not just for the sake of having CGI

Another question is... will the Holiday Special see a Blu-ray release at some point?  Would be another "For the first time ever!" for Disney.

The Star Wars Facebook page acknowledges its existence. That's a start.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

This is why it would be nice if they took a "final cut" approach for the next release of the SE, undoing some of the more egregious changes but leaving in the less-intrusive cgi. That probably won't happen, though. Stuff like Jedi Rocks, while terrible, pretty much screams out to be seen in 3D. George was 13 years ahead of the curb on that one.

Regardless of what they do with it, I'm betting the next SE will be the final one. George ain't gonna live forever and I'm sure he'd want to have the last word on the matter sooner rather than later. Maybe Disney and Lucasfilm could consult with him just like Warner and The Blade Runner Partnership did with Ridley.

Since there's three different SEs, there's no "SE generation". Everyone grew up with a different SE.

This is exactly why they should take the Blade Runner approach to the blu-ray set and have the final 2015 version on the first disc, the '97 on the second and the OOT on the third. A lot of people hate some of the changes made in '04 (Hayden) and '11 (Noooooooo!), but are okay with the '97 version. Since most if not all of the '04/'11 changes would presumably be carried over to the 2015 version (even if they had to redo all of them because of the new scan), it would be nice to include the '97 version as an option.

What we'll probably get is a blu-ray equivalent of the '06 individual dvd sets, the big difference is that they'll be new transfers for both versions instead of recycled ones. Maybe they'll simplify it even more and we'll simply get a three-disc set that's just the restored OOT and nothing more, maybe with a few little extras sprinkled across the discs.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

SE : Generations. It's the one where the plastic poop CGI Jabba dies saving the puppet version.

Sure, but I'd be shocked more if they do a new SE than I would if they released the Holiday Special. They will not waste money making another SE when no one likes the SE in the first place. Even people who like the SE had grown tired of the endless changes with each release. I know the blu ray sold well, but there was huge backlash regarding the stupidity that was added to the films in that release.

Is this the first time it's been acknowledged like this?

What that it exists? Nah, they've owned up to it for years. At one of the Celebrations they used publicity stills from it on free luggage tags they were giving away.

As for a blu-ray release. That will never happen. It was shot on tape, not film. So there's no version of it that would exceed 480p.

A DVD release however...

No way would they ever put that out all on its own. That's extras material for a 7-film box set.

It will be a bonus disc in some form or another. Maybe when the ST is done, they'll release a comprehensive set of both trilogies along with the PT in 4:3 letterbox DVD's, with the Holiday Special as bonus material. Maybe they'll include it with the OUT, seeing as how both have been censored for the past couple decades

the star wars holiday special strikes me as exactly the kind of thing adult swim would air at like 2 am christmas morning if they could afford it

Alright, that would actually be worse than the GOUT. Sure, you may not like the PT, neither do I, but saying stuff like that makes us no better than the weirdos at TFN.

Unless that was a joke. If so, haha.

It could be included as an extra on a Blu Ray in SD, much like all the parodies and the Boba Fett cartoon were on the last boxset.

Where were you in '77?
