Ric, if I could kindly ask you to place your bishop on 10uv to defend my bishop, we can count ourselves a rook richer and a step closer to beating your dad (fingers crossed).

You should have thought to ask me before you moved.

My real move is the one you want: B-10uv
Gentlemen, it has been fun, but it is my assessment that this game cannot be won against two communicating foes. No move nor gambit seemingly can survive when it must outlast 2 moves for every 1. Further, it is only a matter of time before coordinated para-trooping renders my moves futile.
I thank you for the experience, it was most interesting!

I don't suppose you'd want to continue, but disallow any communication between the two of us in terms of strategy?
EDIT: I could have walked across the hallway to ask that...it goes to show how lazy I can be. :P
I really don't think your situation is so bad. I still think you could win. This is the first time I feel we have a chance, honestly. But if you still wish to resign, I understand. If yes, then do you want to pick up the other three player game I suggested?

That is what we considered might happen...our communicating via email.
It would seem unsporting for me to change the rules mid-stream, however tempting...what should then happen if I should find a further problem as the game progresses? Should I be allowed to adjust still more rules?

I thank you for your positive view, but it is only a matter of time before you both realize the strategy that will allow you to gain any piece you should desire from my side. You have begun down that path so there is no further likelihood that you will not see it within a few more moves. There is a basic flaw in that the King cannot afford protection to any single piece without that piece already having protection. To protect each piece therefore requires 2 moves...2 moves for every 4.
Short of fantastic luck it cannot be done.
As for the other 3 player game, I would be quite interested.

It's pretty hard to coordinate, especially since you can pick up on our plans and intervene, but that's okay. The board is a bit bigger. I can try to make it later, unless one of you wants to have a go.
Ric, you've got a PM. Be sure to share with your pop.
There seems to be a bit of a problem with the file. When it opens after downloading, a window pops up telling me that "Excel found unreadable content in [the workbook]" and asks me if I want to recover it. When I click yes, it says it was successful, and tells me this:
Popup Window said:
Replaced Part: /xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml part with XML error. Load error. Line 2, column 59825.
It then gives me a blank spreadsheet.
Could you try reuploading it, perhaps?
Ah crap, it's probably the program I used. I'll try to fix it tomorrow.
Received, downloaded, and opened. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get things back into alignment, as our former little trick doesn't work, nor do many other combinations of things. How far zoomed in/out are you on yours? The hex background doesn't zoom in or out with the pieces, so that could be the problem.
You can enlarge or shrink the separate cells by using the cursor over the lettered and numbered columns and margins. That should allow you to align things properly, even if it is a bit tedious.

How are the pieces supposed to line up with the edge of the board? It looks as if they don't go right up against the edge, and since I've had to play with the spacing between the armies (and will have to do so more) in order to make them fit into the board, I'm concerned that we're going to end up with different set-ups at the end of all this....

Use this link to set the pieces up appropriately. They are pretty close in this game, as it has a smaller board.
After fiddling around for a while, I got it to look like it does in the picture you linked to. So, I'm set up. I'll read the rules later in the day, but before I send the file to my dad, I want to make sure we have our pieces on the exact same squares (either that, or we need to sort out a new coordinate system). Currently, my black pieces start on row 14, and the back row of the red pieces extend from 4uv to 9zaa. We can't use the spreadsheet coordinates if your board isn't the same, so be sure to let me know what yours looks like now.
No, mine unfortunately does not line up like that. I recommend we provide coordinates as in Kokusai Sannin Shogi, with the letters along the top-left and top, and numbers along the top- and bottom-right. Just put white letters and numbers in the black boxes and it shouldn't be a problem.
This game looks like it might be faster-paced than Kokusai Sannin. The pieces are more powerful for the most part, and the board is smaller. Faster-paced may not mean shorter, however, seeing as a player is not out of play until he loses all of his pieces, and a captured king must be dropped back into play before any other pieces, allowing it to be recaptured.
I forgot! I've never used it but on the chessvariants.org page there is a link at the end with a zillions file. We don't have to rely on the spreadsheet.

Well, my dad doesn't have the ability to use the Zillions file...though that could be arranged I suppose. I'll check with him to see which he prefers.

I seem to have this ability just fine.

This is fantastic news. Let's get started! Shall we follow the same rotation?
If you mean the same order of play, why not. My move is then P6i-5h.
That is what I mean. Hope your dad plays soon too :)
