Well, "Spirit in the Sky" was meant to be in the movie, but the scene it played over was cut. I think Gunn said it'd appear on the DVD/BR in the deleted scenes section.
Where did he say that? When I saw him in Atlanta, he said that he hand-picked all of the songs but the one that plays over the trailer and isn't in the movie.

Wouldn't that be Hooked on a Feeling?

There's another trailer that used "Spirit In The Sky".

Alright, I've put this off long enough, I have a theory that I want to share, if I don't push it out now, I never will:

------------------

Is it possible this mix created for Peter Quill by his mother is more than just a collection of her favorite songs, but the story of her and his mysterious father?

The song that really jumped out to me was David Bowie’s "Moonage Daydream”, his tale of Ziggy Stardust, the rock and roll savior of the world who at least communicates with aliens, if not falls in love with one according to the lyrics:

Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah!

The rest of the mix seems to tell a story of falling in love, out of love, back in love, and wanting to reunite. Peter's mom was a teenage rebel ("Cherry Bomb")At first, she believes that Peter’s father is in love with her (“Hooked on a Feeling”), which he denies (“I’m Not in Love”). Eventually, she persuades him (“Go All The Way”), and they start their relationship (“Come And Get Your Love”). The father, who’s literally been around the galaxy, has to admit that she does mean something to him ("Fooled Around and Fell in Love”), but he fears that they don’t have enough in common ("Escape (The Piña Colada Song)”). He leaves her, but she remains convinced that he’ll come back ("Ain't No Mountain High Enough”). "O-o-h Child” is a straight-forward message to her son that, no matter what, things will get better.

The movie ends with the first song from “Vol. 2”, The Jackson 5’s "I Want You Back”, which to me signifies Peter's mom no longer being content with waiting for his father to come back, perhaps encouraging Peter to look for him.

------------------

If I wasn't an idiot, I would have realized that the DragonCon panel with James Gunn would be a Q&A session and I could have actually asked him this question, but by the time I got in line there were way too many people. People did ask about the soundtrack, and he said that the songs were "baked into the script".

Disney/Marvel knows what the people want.

I might have to buy that if it's not too expensive. If it's a limited thing, it will become ebay fodder faster than the vintage Walkmans.

I'm surprised nobody has ever made a cassette shaped gizmo you could stick a USB stick or memory card inside and play in your old car stereo.

Glad I didn't see that other trailer before, as it spoils the reveal of Knowhere and some of Groot's abilities. The first teaser with all the prison introductions to our heroes works much better without giving away too much.

I suspect there were supposed to be more songs on the actual mixtape than we would have heard in the movie.

That is a pretty interesting theory, doubleofive. Maybe you can ask Gunn on his Twitter?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

My wife has a thumb drive she got at a convention that flips out of a full-sized cassette shaped case. It's The Coolest.

And I did send Gunn a link to my post on Twitter, so there's that.

I can't find it now for the life of me, but I could've sworn he said it played during the scene where Quill sees Gamora changing, which features in almost every trailer but ended up being cut from the movie. If I find it, I'll post a link.

There was a montage after they escape from prison set to ELO's Livin' Thing that was cut from the film. This annoys me as ELO's Livin' Thing is one of my all time favorites.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Ain't No Mountain High Enough the first song on Mix 2, and I Want You Back is the second?

One of the hallmarks of a great movie is you're left wanting some more. I'm sure someone around here will reinstate the cut scenes if the forthcoming Blu Ray has them as extras.

I hope we get something to tide us over until 2017 as well. (Three years? Come on! We're getting a new SW movie every two!) Maybe a Rocket Raccoon short film attached to one of the other Marvel flicks? I'd like to see how he met up with Groot.

That's the second time I've heard that, I don't recall exactly when the tape went in. That makes my theory even more clear I should think. Vol 2 is about chasing after the father.

"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" plays after Quill puts Vol. 2 in, and "I Want You Back" plays after that, but there's no real indication that "I Want You Back" is on either tape since it's non-diegetic (well, until the Dancing Groot bit at the end, anyway).

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

I saw it in the theater tonight! It took a long time for me to get out, but I did it, and it was worth it. Loved it, and looking forward to the next one.
