If you want to refer to me, a forty-something, as part of the "younger generation" then I'm more than happy for you to do that!

I'm generalizing again, but I finally figured out you have yet to grasp what that means.....

The inisistence on calling something by its old title when it was renamed over thirty years ago seems to me plain stupid.

Oh, so I have to call it Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark from now on just because George decided I have to? Fuck that. I'll keep calling it Raiders of the Lost Ark, thank you, and I'll do the same for Star Wars.

Typical PT gusher BS I used to hear at TFN, as I didn't know we can only watch the Star Wars movies in the old Communist USSR.

Why would you care if people still call it Star Wars?  Just like I used to hear at TFN that I wasn't a real fan unless I loved all 6 Star Wars movies, or I only watched them 1-6 in that order, or that the SE are the real versions, and the OOT don't exist anymore.

That is the point we all have is that Lucas has put out all of this bullshit with the movies in the past few years, and we have to hear from his loyal followers on how to do this and that with the movies.

I have no problem that you call it 'A New Hope', but just like Lucas, your insecurities about people watching or calling the SW movies something else is pretty frightening.  ;-)

I was five when I saw Star Wars in 1977 (although it's been called A New Hope since 1980 so I think we can get over that now)

No one referred to it as a New Hope in 1980. Every single commercial, VHS tape, laserdisc, and betamax up until I believe the early 2000's referred to the movie as Star Wars, and all the interviews referred to it as Star Wars as well. Look at that documentary tape called from STAR WARS to Jedi. A New Hope was included in the crawl but the movie was not retitled by any means because no one called it A New Hope (and the credits on the back of the VHS tape boxes said the title was STAR WARS)

To be pedantic, it wasn't A New Hope until April 1981. So no one would have known to refer to it as A New Hope in 1980. ;)

The new title actually appeared in the published version of the script included in the art of Star Wars in 1979.

Personally I have no problem with the re-releases being referred to as A New Hope because that's what those versions are known as. I actually thought it was more disturbing having a re-release version being officially labeled by Fox as the original '77 film up to '95 as if nothing never happened.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Interesting, I didn't know that.

And I don't have a problem with people referring to it as A New Hope, I have a problem with people saying I can't refer to it as Star Wars because it is now A New Hope.

As a '90s-early '00s kid (I was born in '87), I referred to Star Wars as Star Wars until sometime between the release of TPM and AOTC, when I began referring to it as A New Hope since that was what everyone else seemed to be doing at the time. I've now come full circle and choose to refer to the film as Star Wars once again.

I've always referred to Star Wars as "The First Star Wars", and for the rest "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi"

Also, add me to the camp where the opinion is Star Wars and ESB were great, RotJ was 'so-so'.  I remember trying really hard to like the ewoks because how I loved the first 2 movies so much.  Sometimes I still try to trick myself into liking them even today.

Dang it, you corrected your typo before I could make fun of it!

I'll instead make fun of the fact that you apparently refer to the prequel movies as Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

What prequel movies?

:p

Also to add to what was said, I only started thinking about the first movie as "Star Wars" when i started lurking on these forums.  It does feel odd when I read people referring it as "A New Hope"

Yeah, given that that's what it's been called since 1980 I can imagine it would feel odd. Again, if you're really, really compromised in the mental department.

What did it say in the opening crawl of the film? I notice you've missed that out completely. Quite tellingly missed it out.

I have no idea what "typical PT gusher BS" means with regards to me and what I have to say on this issue. I'm sorry I scared you, though; I'm not insecure (certainly not on this issue), just bewildered.

1981, and only on the opening crawl. None of the reissue posters call it that, and none of the early video releases do either. Even the Special Edition didn't use it on the posters.

"Only on the opening crawl" - oh, well we can dismiss it then seeing as it's "only on the opening crawl".

Nobody is dismissing it. It's been part of many a preservation project around here.

The point is people were not calling it A New Hope back in the day. The first film is generally thought of as simply Star Wars.

I know what people were calling it back in the day; I was one of them. And now it's been re-titled.

The point is not that is was once called something else; the point is that some still call it that. It's a stupid intellectual argument to continue to call it something which it isn't. You may as well say that people "used" to say the world was flat.

Take it up with all the licensees who keep forgetting to include the subtitle. If Lucasfilm lets it slide by, somebody over at the ranch needs to be sacked. ;)

You never heard of the flat earth society? :P
