I haven't seen enough movies to readily distinguish CGI from physical models, so the same goes for me as well.

Pretty much everything in between stunk.

I agree, they still hold up really well in most places. Not quite as jaw dropping as when it came out, but still definitely impressive and good enough to not 'break you out' of the movie.

What I find interesting now is that so many CGI effects are done that people would never even guess, from romcoms to documentaries, it is used for so many things other than in-your-face effects.

The truly jaw-dropping moment for me was when I saw a breakdown of the vfx in Zodiac revealing much of the crime scene - including the moving cars - to be entirely cgi.

Whether or not the OOT will be released, I think we can now celebrate that there won't be episode numbers on the covers.

I... what? where did you hear that?

I'm not sure. I suppose it's an assumption based on the dropping of "Episode VII" from the title of TFA, but it's a baseless assumption.

now i'm in the mood to pop in Gravity again ;P

i dont know what your feelings are for District 9, but i thought the fx were incredible and kind of underrated due to avatar coming out the same year.

Check this out.  It definitely sounds like Disney is going to release the OT in one form or another - whether its the special edition or the theatrical.  Here's Bob Iger stating that releasing them before EP VII would be "a great idea."

I have a feeling the OT SE is going to be released before the UOT as the SE "fits" in more with overall saga, with the possible exception of the SE ROTJ ending.

Or it could be a 2014/15 SE that "fixes" some of the more egregious 97/04/11 changes first, then the OOT later. I wouldn't mind an SE that ditches, for instance, the Hayden ghost, the "Noooo," and uses the new ROTJ end music but ditches the galaxy-wide celebrations in order to fit with the new trilogy better.

...As long as they release the OOT at or near the same time as the "final" SE.

I don't think Disney/Lucasfilm would change Lucas' latest vision without his consent.  I think they have too much respect for him and people may say it's in bad taste or disrespectful and I'm sure Disney doesn't want that kind of publicity.  They've actually made changes to some of their films to avoid criticism... although, they then received some in exchange for the changes.

They need look no further than how Warner Bros handled it with Blade Runner. With ep7 hitting in December, the comparison becomes even more appropriate. They could do a grand theatrical re-release of the "final" SE from this new 4k master we've already heard about, probably in September or early October (one of the dead zones of the year in terms of blockbusters), and show it in theaters for a limited time in 2d, 3d and digital Imax 3D. It'll still be the SE (albeit in hopefully improved form), so I won't pay to go see it, but if they put it out on blu-ray in December with a restored OOT I would be all over that.

Of course I'd love to be surprised and hear Disney go "screw the SE, we're putting the original versions in theaters!" but that ain't gonna happen.

I don't think Disney paid $4 billion to not release the very movies that made Star Wars such a valueble intellectual property. It's not a matter of if the OOT will be released; it's a matter of when.

I look into my crystal ball and... oh no... I see them releasing the OT next year in their original "cuts", but with re-comped f/x shots (matte-line removal, etc.) and probably unnecessary color-grading as well. People who don't know the difference will be cheering... but people in the know (mostly in this forum) will be sickened all over again and the struggle will continue. That's what I see. I sleep now... -_-

I do agree it's a matter of when.  I was talking about Disney changing the films even further and removing some of Lucas' changes.  I doubt Disney will create their own SE and disregards Lucas' latest edit.  They're still going to release the SE, of course.  The 2011 Blu-ray set sold more than enough without the addition of the theatrical edits.

After the rumors this summer about a release and now this quote from Iger, I have more hope than ever now that it will happen.

So next year we will have a new sequel to ROTJ starring the big three - Ford, Hamill, & Fisher?  Yeah you can bet that Disney will want to evoke a strong sense of nostalgia with their marketing next year for all those who grew up with the OT, by tying the new trilogy in with the old beloved originals that started this whole craze back in 1977.  Episode VII will be marketed as a return to the magic of the original Star Wars universe, and Disney will use every tool at their disposal to make EP VII one giant movie event spectacular.  So releasing the OOT, something that has never been released in modern format, would be a huge marketing tool to help ramp up excitement.

I know I shouldn't be getting my hopes up like this, but a limited theatrical run of the OT, coupled with a blu ray release sometime in the fall just makes too much sense to me...

As Iger says, they're "gonna be really smart about it".

How smart is another Blu-Ray of the 2011 cuts?

By "smart," he may be referring to at least including the UOT with the SE, if not released separately.  However, if the Diamond Edition line is any indication, Disney usually re-releases a title with some incentive to buy... such as remastered picture/sound, unseen deleted scenes, new bonus features, etc.

EXACTLY - and there's a huge incentive with the UOT, not released in the best part of 20 years!

I hate watching broadcasts of live interviews conducted by satellite. The satellite delay makes a conversation seem very awkward, and the participants don't always seem to understand that the interviewee is hearing the voice of the interviewer a couple seconds later than when the audience does. This gives the impression of an unresponsive guest.

As far as the subject mater of their talk, I would say it is quite encouraging.
