Wait, seriously? That R2 looks IDENTICAL to any iteration of R2 I've ever seen. You're just looking for something to be wrong with this movie at this point, aren't you?

I have high hopes for this movie, I'm just not feeling this rendition of R2. Perhaps he'll look better onscreen, but I just see quite a bit of difference between these two models:

Looks ok to me

It's been confirmed at starwars.com as well.  I wonder if the image is any indication that the film will be referred to as "The Force Awakens" instead Episode VII.  Also, is the title suggesting that the Force has been "dead" for quite some time?

STAR WARS EPISODE VII - WAKE UP ... IT'S FORCE TIME

@RebelForceRadio confirmed with Lucasfilm that "Episode VII" will not be an official part of the title.

The proper title of the film will not contain "Episode VII" but I believe it will still be referred to as that in a potential crawler, etc. The film will be marketed officially as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" - JMac

I guess they really want to capture the spirit of the OT including how the films were marketed. :-)

I'm interested to see if the title treatment will change to a more "OT" logo (with The Force Awakens larger than Star Wars), or if it's going to stay like that...

People wouldn't have even been familiar with the concept of Star Wars movies having episode numbers until May of 1980.

As for the title being smaller, that might just be the mystery box at work and them thinking it would be a fun way visually to unveil the title. I'm sure the marketing departments at Lucasfilm and Disney are gonna be busy trying to come up with a catchy-looking logo a la Empire and Jedi. The selling points for all three prequels were the "filling in the blanks" of Episodes I, II and III, hence that was the biggest part of the logos. Episode VII is, arguably, an equally big selling point, but I think they want to avoid anything that will remind people of the prequels in the marketing.

I remain very curious as to how they're going to open the movie without the Fox fanfare. At this point I'm assuming Johnny's just gonna come up with a new piece of music to play over the Disney and Lucasfilm logos and then the rest of the opening will be identical from there.

I can only imagine how confused moviegoers were when they first saw Episode V in the crawl!  Or maybe they didn't even really notice...?

My uncle told me once that he was confused. Then he was confused again when he first got the original on VHS, and convinced himself that it had always had Episode IV: A New Hope in the crawl and he'd just forgotten until the 2006 DVD came out with the pre-ANH crawl.

When you think about, that must've been a cool, clever way of surprising everyone. It's like "oh, by the way (like it's nothing), this is Episode V, not Episode II."

I wonder what all the fanzines and newspapers (and, heck, the nascent internet) made of it in the days after Empire hit theaters.

Wasn't ESB even referred to as "Star Wars 2" or "Episode 2"? Was that even official or something the media came up before the title was announced?

Author

It was just how the media referred to it, since the first film was simply titled Star Wars.

From a saga perspective, this may help explain Yoda & Mace's concern over their ability to use the force having diminished - The Force had been falling asleep for some time. Who knows why, though. I'd say it had to do with the rising Sith power, but eh, not sure.

I don't mind it except... Why not "The Force Awakened"... Such a small change, same basic meaning, but sounds like 10x cooler...

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

They noticed. Lots of murmuring in the audience, IIRC. At least when I went opening weekend.

Lucas got his "middle trilogy" explanation out to the media around the same time though, and it was less of a confusing surprise by the end of the summer.

It was definitely the most "post-modern" piece in ESB, which had otherwise jettisoned the nostalgic pastiche of SW.

I would think it was a fantastic idea to this day, if Georgie hadn't screwed the pooch so badly by trying to retcon in three whole failures of movies just to justify and elaborate that sly wink in 1980.

As an aside, it would be great if Peter Suschitzky shot one of these umpteen Star Wars movies currently in development. He just shot After Earth for Shyamalan recently, digitally on the Sony F65, so another Star Wars, regardless of format, wouldn't be his first Space Opera since Empire.

I always found it funny that he ended up becoming the cinematographer for one of the guys who could've directed RotJ, David Cronenberg.

I was kind of hoping they would go with the rumored title "The Ancient Fear" because it alluded to the history of the Sith...."The Force Awakens" has some pretty big implications behind it.....like something BIG and UNUSUAL in regards to the force is going to happen in this film

Wow! I am surprised the title is revealed to us already, even before the very first teaser trailer... but it makes complete sense if they are wanting us to begin thinking in terms of titles (OT) and not just episode numbers (PT). That's a good way of thinking.

"The Force Awakens", I'm liking it! It sounds like both a beautiful and troublesome circumstance.

Maybe, in his 30 years of solitude, Luke has become so powerful and actually discovers/"awakens" the true nature of the force. Something that even Master Yoda hasn't done to this degree before. Does this mean we'll see brand new force abilities? I sure do hope so.

Which btw...

I'll be happy with that, if true.

I'd also be happy with this version of Luke, rather than the previous rumors where he's surprisingly the main villain all along.

I hope the ST has nothing to do with Sith.

It also makes sense if the first ultra-early teaser trailer is just around the corner, as has been rumored. The titles for the three prequels were announced only a couple months before we saw the first trailer, which was only six months before the film's release.

If the rumors are true about the teaser music being recorded in a few weeks, then I think it's likely we'll get a teaser before the year is out.
