Should I buy the Original Trilogy Blu ray? I already have the 2004 DVD.

I am confused if I should upgrade to the blu ray...

You might as well wait and see if there is a new release next year.

Where were you in '77?

The ONLY reason why I bought the Bluray set were the fantastic deleted scenes. I have seen the movies from the set once and I never plan to watch them again, but the "bonus discs" are great

And once a release worth paying for comes out you should, because the 2004 DVDs are garbage. The 2011 BD set isn't worth it since you've already got a crappy official release. Wait a year and vote for quality with your wallet.

I'd say the BD extras are hit or miss overall. And I have a feeling that we're going to get all that, the glaring omissions, and more in the Disney monstrosity of a set that'll invevitably come out late next year or early 2016. And if we don't you'll still be able to grab the 2011 set if there's anything on there you'll feel you want.

Bottom line: don't buy it now. Wait and see.

There are literally thousands of blu-ray releases out there more worthy of your cash than the 2011 Star Wars set. The deleted scenes, which should've been on the '04 dvd anyway, were pretty much the only selling point imo. That wasn't enough to get me to buy what was essentially the '04 hd master at its full resolution and with a few tweaks.

Episode VII's production has managed to generate enough consistent buzz to distract from the complete and total lack of any OOT news whatsoever. Disney's radio silence on the matter is the reason we flipped out both times those rumors popped up.

But they can't expect to just keep ignoring the gigantic elephant in the room. Maybe something really is blocking them from releasing the originals, I just find that hard to believe. If Fox and WB can work out an agreement over the Adam West Batman series, I really don't see what's stopping Fox and Disney. Could George have made it a condition of the sale to Disney? It's possible, but I think $4 Billion speaks a little louder than that. The only other possibility is the rumor of people at Fox feeling "uncomfortable" having anything to do with a restored OOT release while George is still alive.

I have a feeling the radio silence may be part of the plan. By April/May we will have heard something.

Don't spend a cent on the 2011 set.

I'm sure Fox is contacting their best hitmen this very moment to ensure there won't be any problems with George.

They're not ignoring it. They haven't announced anything OOT, because they don't want to spread the hype too thin and lose momentum before they even get an official teaser out. There isn't even a title for Ep VII yet.

On the other hand, if you're going to download fan edits that use the Blu-ray as a base, you're supposed to own them.

There is that.

I've never downloaded/acquired any, so I guess my conscience is clean on that front.

I'm not getting the BLUs until ESB:R comes out where hopefully the collors will be fixed.

You would be a fool not to buy the blu ray.

people who say the blu ray looks shit around here probably have shit dispays.

Put it through a good system(I have a 4k Sony projector) and they look amazing:

35mm Above......Blu Ray through a Sony 4K projector below:

Also OLED tvs have just hit the market.

Star Wars...with it's black space backgrounds will benefit....OLED on the left...LCD on the right:

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

The complaints are mostly related to color timing, which is true. Clarity is still pretty good, though. Honestly, the only reason not to get them is the lack of the OOT.

1. That's a faded 35mm print.

2. I shouldn't have to buy a 4k projector to enjoy a movie.

I prefer Harmy's versions for OT, for the PT you can keep the BR

Well, there are some issues with the colours still.

I got it on opening day. If you want them, go for them. The extras are nice, and RotS looks pretty damn good. I watch Harmy if it's convenient to do so, but the Blu-rays worked for me just fine when I didn't watch Harmy. I'd wait though if there's no rush and money is an issue, at least if you care about the OUT and color timing enough to be upset if there's another release with a better transfer soon, which there might well be.

I'd say wait, if for no other reason than that we know there's been a 4k transfer with better colors.

Maybe I don't know enough about the subject to notice that issue but I'm sure those have their flaws as you point out.

I guess that all comes down to money, if you can afford it then it won't hurt to have it, who knows? maybe in 40 years it will become a collector's item. Nevertheless, get Harmy's EDs, and some fan edits for the PT. You could have the official BRs and a special customized collection made by yourself :p

No, but if you care about films then you should at least have a decent set-up. Or does the love of an untouched oringal trilogy round here extend to watching the film on the kind of home entertainment system that existed in 1977?

I agree with Danny Boy; the Blu-ray transfers are the best way to enjoy the films at the moment. I find the audio aspect of the six films to be more impressive than the visual aspect, though, although Revenge Of The Sith is probably just as impressive to look at as it is to listen to.

For a balanced and informed critique, you're best bet is to check out the review on blu-ray.com http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-The-Complete-Saga-Blu-ray/14903/#Review

Just out of curiosity - for ep.IV, do you prefer the blu-ray or Harmy's, and if the former, why?

Guys why do you prefer the Original Version when the Special Editions have improved CGIs?

I will stick on to the DVDs as I hate the ROTJ ending when Darth Vader screams "Nooo!"

Sorry, but many of us here get absolutely no enjoyment from watching the blu-rays with their ridiculous changes that GL has made over the years.  They are simply unwatchable for me and for all of my friends as well.  I am holding out hope for the originals to be released next fall before EPVII.  If that doesn't happen, I'll just stick with Harmy's versions.

I'm just 15, I grew up with the special edition and the prequels. :)
