Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 45

It looks like the picture was squeezed in a bit at the sides because the "new" R2 doesn't look as fat.  Or the SW screenshot has been stretched slightly.  I would be surprised if they didn't look at the pictures and possibly the original props when recreating R2.  No doubt they had the original blueprints in their possession.

There are a couple other photos of R2 on the web, and as far as I can tell, they look identical to the OT model.  The R2 models for EP VII are fan-made by members of the R2-D2 Builders club to be 100% faithful to the original.  Relax, guys - R2 will look exactly like his old self.

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

Maybe R2 decided to slim down for the film because he he got tired of being called an 'overweight glob of grease'

A fan droid builder group that didn't get it right would never live down the shame of screwing it up.

Anthony Daniels has said he asked for, and got a Threepio suit that's easier for him to wear, and outwardly is identical to the original costumes. We've already seen a pic of Chewie that avoided the mistakes made with the Episode III suit, so why worry? :)

I heard that we'll be getting a teaser soon.

Rumor has it that it'll be attached to "Into the Woods," which opens on Christmas Day.  Also, rumor has it that Williams has already seen and written music for the teaser, which set to be recorded on November 17.  If true, I hope the new music will get a digital release around the same time.

Empty words, but it's nice to see his enthusiasm. :-)

They should just loop it for 90 minutes and charge admission. ;)

What was wrong with the Ep. III suit? I don't remember any issues, but it's been so long since I've seen it...

Well, like many of the OT things recreated for the prequels (Vader's costume, Yoda, Anakin/Luke's lightsaber) they just didn't do a very good job making it look like the original. In ROTS he was much thicker over all with a noticably different shape to his head/face and his fur color seemed more golden and had a different texture/sheen to it.

That shot posted above is awesome because it looks MUCH more like the OT Chewbacca costumes.

I feel a deja vu moment coming on! We talked about this somewhere earlier this year and someone posted a few comparison photos... I can't seem to find the discussion...

Don't forget Jabba! Why does he have four fingers in TPM and the SEs instead of three, among other inaccuracies?

Toy companies can make very accurate recreations of these characters and props, but it was apparently beyond Lucasfilms capabilities during the prequel era.

He's also probably really happy with the new Threepio suit, since he's not locked inside it all day.  ;)

It looks like R2's original holo projector was black and the new one is silver/metallic.

But I know someone (he's building one at the mo) who knows the guys who JJ talked to about the new R2 and I promise they know their stuff.

I like that R2 doesn't look exactly the same as he did 30 years ago. It makes it seem like he's seen a bit of action since we've last seen him. Maybe the holo projector went bad during that time and was replaced?

Just like putting new parts in your beloved old car. And I haven't seen anyone pulling their hair out over the Falcon's new dish yet. ;)

I'm still thrilled that anybody is talking to anybody about getting things right on these new films! ;-)

Even that little amount of care was beyond Lucasfilm a decade ago.
