Help: looking for... 'Something Evil' - lost Spielberg film?

there is a 1.25GB TVrip of this in English with Russian soft-subs (external .srt) over on rutracker... Am downloading now at 450kB/s and should have it in 45 minutes and can comment on quality at that time ;o)

UPDATE: So it turns out that this is a re-encode of a WMV file, which is available on kickass(KAT) and that is a 1.15GB release, which has better audio as there is one less step of lossy encoding. That being said, the "tvrip" is actually a VHS rip and it's not a very good one but watchable. Also, the movie starts off 16:9 for the beginning credits but then goes to 4:3 P&S. If anyone wants screenshots, I'll post after I take a nap ;o)

Damn. Too bad nothing of good...or even high quality exists at the moment. A friend is looking for a print or scan of it.

The film has shown on The Horror Channel in the UK quite a bit recently - it'll have a watermark on it, but is probably someone's best bet for a "clean", non-VHS copy.  There don't appear to be any airings lined up but it'll be worth keeping an eye out for one.

Thanks about that - yes, that's the best recording available so far but it's pretty bad. The source they use for the VERY rare broadcasts (we're counting one every 15 yearss and it's always a "forced mistake" when it's shown) is still the same VHS-like quality one as the one used for the (few) 70s/80s broadcasts. There are a couple of recordings of the film on the web but they're all rather bad - Spielberg really managed to bury this one almost completely.

Would love to know if anyone has a 35mm copy!!!

The Horror Channel comes through in absolutely horrible quality (on my SkyHD box anyway), so whilst this will be a worthy preservation, don't expect too much.

I've marked both airings to record, and I have a Freesat box, which I can easily extract the HDD from. I've transferred recordings from ITV, BBC, etc. and had no problems bypassing the encryption, so I imagine I'll be able to do the same with this one. I imagine the Horror Channel probably broadcasts in 544x576 though.

Sounds about right.  British terrestrial is infamously low-bitrate and low-resolution.

How was the quality on this broadcast? Any improvement over the common rips?

Just transferred my copies from the FreeSat box to my HDD, the video is indeed 544x576, overall size is just over 1GB for each recording, which run around 1h30.

Here is a quick comparison:

jerryshadoe, PM sent!

Anyone else who would like these recordings, feel free to PM me, although I don't always check back daily! I should also mention that I've never seen the film before, so I can't tell you if anything is cut from it or not.
