HALLOWEEN - Fixing the audio and re-creating 1999 color timing (Released) — Page 9

This one seems fine so far.  Just doing some testing before tonight.  Honestly, some of what we could be noticing is potentially poor ADR.  The scene where the 3 girls are walking home is full of ADR.  Honestly, now that I'm paying so much attention to the audio, I'm noticing things I never have before.  The live audio seems to be perfect, but some of the ADR seems...I dunno...weird.

I'd have to compare it side by side with the DVD or LaserDisc itself and I'm not gonna have time to do that now.

Either way, fidelity is amazing and it's close enough to create a pleasant experience.

Totally.

There always has been slightly dodgey ADR when the girls walk home.  Not all of it, but there are moments that have always been less than perfect.

Maybe it's just the ADR goes slightly off, but you never noticed before because you weren't looking for it?

No doubt there are some ADR issues in the movie.  But using the original track which DoomBot sent out I was comparing them to other tracks and there was definitely a difference.

In fact Doombot himself did a direct comparison with the audio files (whereas I was just switching between them while watching) which is why he went back to fix them.

Not sure if DB went through the entire movie but just fixed bits around the side changes where the issues were obvious.

DJ mentioned that a new track is coming soon, but I'm not sure if he is working on it himself or he was referring to Mat Stephens.  In any case I would be interested in hearing any new versions.

As some of you know, I have decided to start an "Halloween [spoRv]" project, using laserdisc as color reference. But I needed to find that disc. Right now, after literally hours of researches through my infinite collection, spanned over several days, and after I looked at any title twice or three times, I finally found it!

And discovered that I have not the simple, plain Criterion version... no... I have the FULL FLEDGED VERSION! Yes, not the #310, but the #247; according to LDDB:

Extras include:

Commentary with writer/director/composer John Carpenter, writer/producer Debra Hill and actress Jamie Lee Curtis
    The original theatrical trailer
Separate music and effects track (analog left)
Additional footage shot for the 1980 television release
Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert give splatter movies the thumbs down while praising Halloween in a controversial 1980 Sneak Previews segment
Photo essay on the making of Halloween
    Photo Essay on splatter films
Illustrated filmographies of John Carpenter, Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis
The cover also contains the famous review by Tom Allen (Village Voice)

This transfer was made from a newly minted 35mm Panavision print made from the original negative, the 35mm magnetic master mono soundtrack, and the 35mm magnetic mono music and effects track.

Footage from the television release is presented full-frame, transfered from the original 1-inch master created for broadcast.

Also contains:

Genre guide by John McCarty, author of Splatter Movies: Breaking the Last Taboo of the Screen, including capsule reviews of cold-blooded killer movies from The Bad Seed to Halloween 5

Programme order given if you want to watch the film with the extra sequences which are at the end of sides 1 & 2.

So, the task is becoming harder than I imagined... well, maybe it was discussed here before, but because I'm too lazy to re-read 200+ posts, I'll ask anyway...

Are those extras present in the BD(s) or DVD(s)?

Apart the obvious color regrading, and inclusion of the original PCM soundtrack from the laserdisc, should I add something more? I mean, commentary, the isolated score, the television scenes - that I'm quite sure they are present in digital format, but are they color corrected like the movie itself? - and what about those extras?

The commentary and most of the extras are on DVD. Some of the still-frame stuff never made it to another format. The isolated music and effects track is only on the laserdisc, I would think that definitely worth preserving.

Commentary track on laserdisc is different from the one found on BD - don't know about other DVDs, but on the 1999 THX there is no commentary.

Critrion CAV Laserdisc digital soundtrack: I just finished to sync it to the 35th anniversary BD, and I discovered why the LD track floating around in this thread could be not in sync; the dialogs and the score have different sync for each version... I mean, if the BD music is in sync with the LD music, the dialogs are out of sync, and vice versa...

I managed to put in sync the dialogs only, because a lip sync problem is most noticeable than music cues put a bit out of sync; the finished track discrepancies should be around +/- 8.5ms, often even less - really below than the 22ms reccomendation for film lip sync.

Sync made in avisynth, only adding or cutting the equivalent of a ntsc field(s) (16.734ms); the final file is .flac 44khz 16bit to have a smaller file - obviously it's possible to reconvert it to .wav file without losing any bit!

I tested myself and it seems perfectly in sync, but I didn't watch the whole movie, so further testing is needed. If someone is interested, here you are the link (200MB): http://www.sendspace.com/file/bkh315

I opened it in Audacity and exported to a 48khz .wav

Do any audio experts know if that's good enough for re-sampling for Blu-ray?  The audio seems to still sound good this way, but I'm not playing it back on my full system.

I'll have to check sync later when I get a moment.

Is this also a new rip or from the same rip as the previous project?

This is a rip I have done for my Halloween [spoRv] project, using the Criterion CAV laserdisc - the other was from Criterion CLV laserdisc.

The conversion to 48khz is the right thing to do to be blu-ray compliant; no need to do it if you want to mux it with the bd video and play it onto your pc.

As long as dialogue is synced, I don't see a problem.  It would be nearly impossible to notice the music being a few milliseconds from its mark.  That's why I never noticed it with the original track we were supplied, which worked great by the way.  I synced it to the dialogue and never had a problem.  Andrea, this sounds like it will work out just fine.

Probably all you are aware of the fact that I released my Halloween [spoRv] project; but, as I just added the isolated score & effects download link to the first post of my thread, I just thought to post it here too, for whom it may concern.

In case anyone is interested:

I compared Matt_Stevens' synced laserdisc mono track with the new mono track included on the Shout! Factory Halloween box set release. The mono included on the new blu-ray is actually the original mix this time around (no fold-downs, unlike the 35th Anniversary), but it doesn't sound nearly as good as the LD audio -- too much noise reduction.

I watched the new blu ray release with the correct mono the other night, and I could hear faint background noise throughout. It's certainly better than the lossy mono on the 2007 disc.

One little detail about the tv footage I had forgotten about is that there was a title card with a date before the auditorium scene with Loomis that's gone missing. Did any of the previous releases have that? I can't dig out my Criterion to check at the moment.

I dug out my Criterion CAV LD and checked for you.

At the end of Chapter 13 and beginning of Chapter 14 (auditorium scene) there's a title card that reads, "Smith's Grove, Illinois" followed by "May 1, 1964".

Thanks, Lil Brutto. Wonder why it's been omitted since then? (The bonus disc from the new set doesn't have it either.) I've never seen the Anchor Bay extended edition DVD though.

There are indeed! A few years late to this particular party, I realize, but I just bought the 35th Anniversary blu and am loathe to watch it without the original mono. If any of these LD-sourced audio files are still around, might someone be willing to PM me about getting my hands on one?

EDIT: Received, thanks!

A few years later, is it still possible to get the synced mono audio from the Criterion LD? And will it sync with the new UHD release?

Go to FanRes.

I did a while back. I PM’d the OP but never heard back. Apparently they’re a very closed community and don’t like to share their stuff with random posters.
