There is a great 35mm print of Star Trek III available for $475 at the moment, if anyone is interested in securing it.

I'd encourage those who do have some spare funds to contribute to this, as no theatrical preservation has been done for any Trek film in regards to the original colortiming.

Here is a gallery of pictures that were taken during a showing of the print in question: http://jpegbay.com/gallery/003943756-24.html

If you compare this to the colortiming of the BLU-RAY or the DVD, you'll notice it is quite different (more of a natural look).

I've pitched in, I encourage others to as well.

I don't know if it's just because it's a photo off a projection, but I really like the contrast in the space scenes. The video transfers sometimes seem too bright/neutral, I'm wondering if the original theatrical timing didn't bring out the fill lighting on the models as much as the video transfers do...

LOVE this!!!!  I don't have any available funds until the end of the month and I'm guessing that is not going to help now.  I would easily give up $75.00 as a donation to whomever of us purchases this so we can have it.

AWESOME!!!!

This is my favorite Star Trek film after TWOK. It really shows how deep the bond between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy runs. If only TMP had been better(aka a totally different plot) this would have been the perfect trilogy if they had stopped making ST movies and left it at a trilogy. I have the 10 disc Blu-Ray set and to be honest I thought it looked alright but this would definitely be a treat to watch a theatrical print of III.

Actually, now that I think of it, my perfect Star Trek trilogy would be 2,3, &6. Those should be renamed to 1,2, &3 and then all else could be forgotten.

Luke threw twice…maybe.

Well, 2, 3 and 4 make up a continuous trilogy...

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

It would be awesome if you could.

I have it reserved for 72 hours. If we can get some people to donate towards costs, or at least pledge to, I can hold the debt for a little while.

If you can hold out for 2 weeks I will gladly donate the $75.00 I spoke of.  I've donated towards other purchases and this one would be just as beneficial to us fans.

I can carry it on my card until then.

OK now I'm confused - why are you guys so excited about this film print exactly? I mean I haven't seen the Bluray version for several years (I'm not a fan of this film) but wasn't the BD version "good enough" ?

I prefer knowing the scanning of a film print is in the hands of someone who cares.

The BluRays for III, IV and VI were DNR'd to death. Massive amounts of grain and detail killing noise reduction were applied. I cannot comment on Part V since i hate that film and prefer to think of it not existing at all.

Only Trek II avoided grain raping. Even Trek I had some DNR.

I know nothing about these films really, just let people know when a good quality scifi print becomes available as they are getting more and more rare.

From the threads on AMPS I take it there are some audio, colour and grain differences between the Theatrical release and the home releases.

You use that word, but I do not think it means what you think it means.

I don't care that the PC crowd has frowned on the terminology. It is what it is.

Poor grain sure as hell didn't give consent. :(

PC crowd? The term by definition means sexual violation. You're indeed correct it is what it is but you do not seem to understand what it is, which could be due to any number of factors.

Feallansaid:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it might lack cognition which would make consent quite a tough notion to tackle, as well as an emotional system to feel the horror of that sort of violation (not to mention a sexual system to violate).

Oh wait, how silly of me, you guys where making a joke. I guess my close encounter with rape, and the rapes my friend's have had to survive, is pretty good material to draw from (especially the PTSD). I should just stop being a prude and chillax about the whole thing I guess. Would you like some details of what it's like so that you can make your jokes even more gut bustlingly juvenil- eer hilarious?

Okay, this isn't the place for this debate. It's not like better, more technical or descriptive words don't exist. I don't give a damn about PC, using rape in that context is just plain poor taste. A little civility around here goes a long way.

Take it elsewhere, or I lock this thread down.

It's in a can somewhere, waiting for you to donate towards its bail (Poita cannot be left shouldering the cost).
