Should Darth Plagueis have had a larger part in the PT?

Author

Given how there really was no plot in the Phantom menace, would it have been better to have Plagueis eliminated in a central plot surrounding either the Jedi or a duel with Sidious? Without referencing the novel too much, do you think Lucas should've given more of a setting to Sidious's master? What did you think when they first brought him up in ROTS? What could Lucas have done to integrate him better into the PT?

Maybe; you could have Palpatine exploit Anakin's lack of a biological father by saying that Plagueis created him, and that his destiny belonged to the dark side of the force all along, which could be a motive for becoming Darth Vader.

Or just never mention Plagueis at all, that wouldn't affect the story much.

When TPM first came out some thought that Sidious was Palpatine's master. I guess they could have had Plagueis be behind the Invasion of Naboo, with Sidious rising to the position of master later on.

I was surprised that Sidious ever had a master.

Change his name to something other than "Darth Plagueis", and I might agree.

This is a decent idea.

I feel like his name was just shoehorned into the film as it was. It didn't mean anything aside from basically giving Palpatine's position away.

They should have revealed that Jar Jar is Plagueis. ;)

Jar Jar as a Sith lord would have made much more sense in the prequels!

HELL YEAH! The book "Darth Plagueis" is the greatest piece of Star Wars property since Empire Strikes back! After I read that I was really pissed off at the fact that if Lucas hadn't been at the helm and the book was a movie, we would have had a real serious film that actually delved into the motivations of the Sith, especially Palpatine. I've said it before and I'll say it again the book  "Darth Plaugeuis" is the real episode 1, forget the movies

Admittedly, I'm completely biased against anything and everything that directly builds off of the PT. That being said, I'm still not going to buy into your claim.

Most complete argument in the entire thread.

My take was always that Palp talking about Plagueis to Anakin was just a red herring. Kind of like a little kick-in-the-ass for Anakin to hurray up and join the darkside.

*PALPATINE : No, no, no, no. No, you see, the thing about the light side, is that the light side is for people who like the sort of things that go on in the light side, like, uh, well, singing, talking to ghosts, watering pot plants...
ANAKIN : Ew...
PALPATINE : Whereas the dark side, on the other hand, is for people who like the other sorts of things: [with relish] adultery, pillage, torture — those... areas.
ANAKIN : Really?

Have you suggested this to Frink for the Opera scene? Although I think he's told me before that he doesn't own that show.

Correct.  And I'm pretty happy with his story about Ric Olie the Wise.

He's not even in the first draft. Instead, Palpatine claims to have created Anakin by manipulating midichlorians. I think that Lucas created Plagueis so that the Sith could create Anakin without Palpatine being Luke's grandpa.

I always felt that the story of Plagueis was yet another sly reveal as to Palpatine's real identity - for those viewers who were discovering Star Wars through the prequels. True, in an earlier draft Palpatine reveals himself as Anakin's father but Lucas wisely re-wrote that (we only need one "I am your father" in the saga, after all).

I don't think the character should have played a bigger part in the films anymore than I think Dooku should have been in Episode One or Grievous should have been in Episode Two.

That's some bad hat, Harry
