How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4 — Page 78

I believe you already dropped that pawn in this move:

If that isn't the case, then I made a mistake somewhere, because I have twenty-four pawns accounted for already.

I think he's got it right.  I showed that he had a pawn in hand, and I count 24 including that one.  I can try to put up a screencap before moving if you want.

Count again. There are now twenty-five pawns on your board as well. Row by row, so that you don't miss any, there are:

Row:     No. of Pawns:

3           1
4
3
5
2
6
2
7

8

9
3 [I have the one in the centre hex promoted, but correct me on that if I'm wrong]
10

11

12

13

Ah, you are correct.  I count 25 as well.  I think my eyes skipped over the one on the center hex, which I believe would not be promoted.  Your dad dropped it there if I remember correctly, and a piece does not promote when dropped, only when moved.  He never indicated it was promoted either, which I believe shows that he knows that.  We may have to review the past several moves to be sure, though.

Author

Ah, yes. I originally didn't promote it for that reason, but later did, forgetting that it hadn't been moved there.

Sorry about that.

Well, that might have affected my strategy, but not enough to go back.  I'm fine then with the game progressing as is, with a promoted pawn on the central cell and the most recent move as is.  Are you in agreement, Ric?

And is the board otherwise correct as I have shown above, with the only change involving the two pawns that should be a single promoted pawn in the central cell?

Author
Time

There is no impact on my strategy either, and our boards are in perfect agreement, so let us continue. Your turn, ender...

+R-14qr mate.  I just wanted to be sure of everything first.  Sorry Ric.

Author

I knew I should have double-checked to make sure all those hexes were covered... Ah, well, no worries. I guess I'm relegated to the sidelines for now. It's a pity the first move rule for the king doesn't apply under check...

Well, for the rest of the game you two only have one bishop to share between yourselves. Next time I'll be less hesitant about dropping my pieces on the board. I could have easily saved my neck.

It's okay, bud.  Did you not notice the vulnerability thrugh simple ovrlooking or by unfamiliarity with piece moves?  Did you think the gold was defending that hex?

Either way, I hope you will continue to read the thread and make comments and jokes till we play another game :)

Author
Time

I believe I had the path your rook took defended (from row 11 to 15 anyway) at some point (maybe I never really did, but only thought so because I was overlooking something), and I think that changed when I moved some pieces without me really thinking about it. I didn't really look at it too closely after that, and figured it was well enough protected by my gold and silver generals, though I never really checked for sure. So it was just carelessness on my part.

I'll still follow the game, but one of you hurry up and finish off the other so I can play again. ;)

Author

So Praetorian, I should note that all Ric's pieces are now removed from the board.

Ric, I'll be sure to to finish off your father and his army of cross-dressers as fast as possible ;)

It was just the rook...and he says he only did it on Sundays...

Now that I no longer have a stake in this, I'll be referee and be sure to call you both out on any violence or aggression I see.

Those who have defected from your side to mine have related many stories, including "Girls Nights" every night of the week, where your whole army would get together and braid each others' hair while giggling and talking about Justin Bieber.  Now I understand these are defectors with a chip on their shoulder, so I'm not saying their story is 100% reliable, but I mean, but now that I know about your rook, there's got to be some truth to these rumors I think ;)

Ric, a ref would be good.  Just following along on the progress of the game and catching any errors and perhaps a screenshot every now and then would be much appreciated, if you are able to do that. :)

No, that wouldn't work, sorry. ;)

Ah, I see you are not used to fighting Amazonians! Yes, they make fine warriors--but don't steal their hairbrush!

No, I've faced many Amazonian armies.  Usually they simply join me for my good looks.  But I've never faced one with such hairy faces and armpits.  I could have sworn I was attacking the Men in Tights ;)

I never would have thought the Amazonians were so good at sharing as to have only a single hairbrush between them!

Well, they are extremely well trained...and who said there were only two of them?

The question that arises, and I don't believe is thoroughly answered in the official rules, is whether or not Ric's promotion zone still exists?  It seems illogical to me to be able to continue promoting in his three ranks, but before we find ourselves in controversy, what do you guys think?

Author
Time

You know, though it seems illogical to me, I'd rather play the game as close to the correct rules as possible, and nothing indicates that the zones disappear.  Perhaps it won't be as big a deal as I thought.  We shall see.  But for now I'll say I'll go for keeping them.
