How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4 — Page 72

I say we just continue with our positions reversed.  No big deal.

And I agree, everything else has worked out so far, but to me it looks like this one is not right.

Look at your first move: L-14yz.  Since it's in the rank right below your pawns, it should not occupy the same yz "file".

Oh, I guess considering we switched sides, you might want to start over, or at least make your last move different, so my point point about the pawn move may be moot.

Author
Time

No, the switched sides won't affect my move, so your point point is still valid. I think it's wrong though. My lance is two rows below the first pawn I moved, so they should line up.

I'll make my next move assuming I'm correct, which is hopefully the case.

Are we continuing from where we left off, but with you two on opposite sides, or going back to the beginning of the game, making ender's move the second of the first round?

And Ric, I think your pawn move is confusing.  Unless the cells are differently lined up with the hexes (a distinct possibility), you could move Pxy or Pzaa to the cell indicated, but Pyz actually straddles two cells.

Are you sure I'm wrong? All the moves made so far work for me, including my pawn move, which works just fine on my board.

I'd make my move now, but I want to make sure we're all on the same page first.

I also noticed it was a stradled move. Ric, I think maybe you inserted a column into your board. Your furthest most black cell should be 3 columns in.

By the way, it is nice that you could join us, and I hope you have fun.  I love shogi, and I've played far more since your son showed interest than I have in the many years since I discovered its existence (1996 I believe).  I've had a hard time finding true converts, so this has been a true pleasure for me :)

Thank you. I used to play Shogi many years ago (before the age of the internet). It was a challenge to find people willing to play. This will be my first experience with the 3 player version though. It should prove interesting.

I am not sure what's going on.  Let me review the moves as I read them.  Normally in shogi, every player's move is counted separately (thus all three of us make moves 1, 2, and 3, though in chess we would just label all that move 1), but I am going to label them like our chess for ease of viewing:

First-Ric, Middle-Post, Last-Ender

1. L-14yz, P10ij-10kl, P-7vw

2. P13yz???-12yz (not possible, both are yz, first incorrect), and now you are moving again before either of us, P13no-12op

I think you misunderstood your dad's and my last moves, which were piece corrections.  Maybe I'm confused.  I don't know.

Strike this...I think I understand what happened (should have been xy to yz). Do you want to take this move back?

Yes, that`s right. Just cancel my second move. I will use my third move for my second move instead.

OK, so now I think we are all on the same page.

First-Ric, Middle-Post, Last-Ender

1. L-14yz, P10ij-10kl, P-7vw

2. P13no-12op,

So my next move will be: P5no-5pq

EDIT: I missed my dad's post and superfluously wrote out all the moves again. Oh well, at least we all agree.

The reason I made a third move and didn't take back my second move is because I was under the mistaken impression that you two weren't switching your moves to the opposite sides as well as switching pieces. I ended up thinking you two each had a second move. Silly me.

Well, I think we're all in agreement now. Post Praetorian darth_ender's turn.

Actually it's my first time with the 3 player game as well.  I first heard of shogi when I purchased and read this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Rules-Classic-Games-Wayne-Schmittberger/dp/0471536210/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411519804&sr=8-1&keywords=new+rules+for+classic+games

It gave the rules for Chu Shogi, but not regular shogi, but it referred to it extensively.  It also mentioned what is known as the "Petty Diplomacy Problem," a problem inherent with 3 player games, and mentioned that the game we now play is the best game at overcoming this problem.  I hunted down the rules for regular shogi and fell in love.  I'd wanted to play Kokusai Sannin Shogi, the game we are playing, but the rules could not be found anywhere.  Finally I found an online friend who sent me the rules via email: Steve Evans, author of some very nice but outdated shogi variant software.  But that was in 2001 I believe.  And only now do I get my first opportunity to play.  So I am indeed very excited to play this game with you both.  Thanks for joining.

So no worries about anything.  Just glad we're on the same page.  Sorry it took so long to respond.  I was nearly done with my last post, and then had to take care of my rotten little kids ;)

So anyhow, I will make my move, and we'll continue tomorrow.  G-6wx

I assume you're promoting (is that optional or obligatory in Kokusai Sannin)?

Actually, I think I'll have to take that back because it is running on the wrong plane. I have changed it to R-13lm (promoted)

I believe that, as in regular shogi, promotion is optional unless the piece will be incapacitated if it does not promote.

What an early aggressive start!

I would have done the same, but I'm hesitant about forming any alliances just yet.

I agree.  A promoted king is such a powerful piece that it frightens me to actually form an alliance.

In the future, please make a new post to either note your edit or update your move, because I missed this. :(

I'm hesitant about changing my last move, since that would mess up the last move each of you made, but I think I'm going to have a rough game ahead of me if I don't. Would you let me exchange P13xy-12yz for L-14kl? If so, do your moves remain the same, or will they be different?

Sorry... :P I hate to mess up the game again. If you deny my request, my move remains L-14kl, and I'll just have to deal with the lance I wouldn't have had to worry about earlier.

Bad timing. I had realized my mistake within 5 minutes of posting so thought an edit would avoid confusion. I have no problem with you modifying your last move, but of course mine would be to take your lance instead of moving mine so I'm not sure if that's what you have in mind?

This is a bit of a rocky start!

It might be easier to simply re-start at this point.
