By the way, it is nice that you could join us, and I hope you have fun.  I love shogi, and I've played far more since your son showed interest than I have in the many years since I discovered its existence (1996 I believe).  I've had a hard time finding true converts, so this has been a true pleasure for me :)

Thank you. I used to play Shogi many years ago (before the age of the internet). It was a challenge to find people willing to play. This will be my first experience with the 3 player version though. It should prove interesting.

Actually it's my first time with the 3 player game as well.  I first heard of shogi when I purchased and read this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Rules-Classic-Games-Wayne-Schmittberger/dp/0471536210/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411519804&sr=8-1&keywords=new+rules+for+classic+games

It gave the rules for Chu Shogi, but not regular shogi, but it referred to it extensively.  It also mentioned what is known as the "Petty Diplomacy Problem," a problem inherent with 3 player games, and mentioned that the game we now play is the best game at overcoming this problem.  I hunted down the rules for regular shogi and fell in love.  I'd wanted to play Kokusai Sannin Shogi, the game we are playing, but the rules could not be found anywhere.  Finally I found an online friend who sent me the rules via email: Steve Evans, author of some very nice but outdated shogi variant software.  But that was in 2001 I believe.  And only now do I get my first opportunity to play.  So I am indeed very excited to play this game with you both.  Thanks for joining.
