that me every time I watch the scene in Star Trek V where Spock hands Sybok the gun.

Yeah the logical thing to do would be to shoot him in the leg or something and knock him out with a hypospray so he couldn't use his mind powers on everyone. it put the fewest lives at risk and it meant he didn't have to kill Sybok.  Still even if killing him was the only option since when has Spock ever had a problem with killing people in order to save lives?  "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,or the one" after all.

I hear Nimoy almost didn't make the movie because that scene was so far out of character for Spock and that Shatner added the whole brother angel just to get him on board. Nimoy said he still felt it was out of character but at least he could play it as something that made some sort of sense for a human character to be doing,it just didn't make any sense for Spock to be the one doing it.

He could have used the Vulcan nerve pinch.

He could have decked Sybok.

He have thrown the gun to kirk or one the other crew, saying "I can't shoot him, he's my brother"

If the gun had a stun setting(which many in the Star Trek universe do have) he could have set it to stun and then shot Sybok.

But with all those options avaibable,  he hands Sybok the gun and allowed him to take the ship.

I hate that scene.
