Info Wanted: What are the "essential" OT fan-edits to have?

Between this thread and my previous thread about the prequels, you can easily tell how new I am here.

I’ve got the Despecialized Editions, but I’ve been digging deeper in the forums since then and I’m wondering what the most popular/“essential” fan-edits of the OT are to own.

Sorry if this comes off as spoonfeeding, and if so I’ll just keep trying to learn about all this.

EDIT: I also meant to include fan-preservations like Puggo as well.

If like myself you some consider some the Special Edition changes to be improvements, like for example the updated x-wing special effects during the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars or the updated entrance to Cloud City in Empire Strikes Back, I would recommend that you check out my latest Star Wars Semi-Specialised Retro Edition V2.1 release and my latest The Empire Strikes Back Semi-Specialised Retro Edition V2.1 release. The Return of the Jedi Semi-Specialised Retro Edition V2.1 release will be coming out in the next few days.

They get rid of all the bad Special Edition changes like Greedo shooting first, Jabba in Star Wars, Jedi Rocks, Hayden Christensen as a jedi ghost etc. while keeping all the good changes.

Both releases can be found on tehparadox and myspleen.

War of the Stars I and II by TMBTM
Pulp Empire by njvc

Although you've put this thread in the wrong forum...

The big one is Adywan's *Star Wars: Revisited*, of course.

I honestly haven't seen any other OT edits. Well, I think I saw an ROTJ edit by Spence that wasn't bad, but I really don't think ROTJ can be improved that much by editing - either you're just re-arranging scenes, or cutting out as much of the Ewoks as you can, and I don't think either of those things fixes the story problems ROTJ has. It's not like the prequels, where there's an okay story buried under a mound of crap that can be sloughed off to turn them into okay movies - ROTJ is just an okay movie.

Yeah I agree. I've always considered ROTJ the worst of the best, only relatively. And likewise, ROTS is the best of the worst.

My favorite fan edits are Adywan's, and War of the Stars.

What Adywan achieved with Star Wars Revisited was pretty damn impressive in terms of special effects but he takes too many creative liberties in his Revisited releases for my liking.

I've never heard of War of the Stars, the name reminds me of the anime Crest of the Stars which I really enjoyed. I'll definately be sure to check it out.

War of the Stars is brilliant. I love how bloody it is, just as George's original script was. Love its dark humour too

I like them as fan-edits -- I expect a fan-edit to change the movie.  War of the Stars changes it even more.  For something true to the original, choose a preservation project.

Pulp Empire is awesome, especially if you dig Tarantino's movies.

You misunderstood what I said there. Fan edits change the editing of a film so they are changing the movie, it goes with the territory so I have no problem with that whatsoever.

When you start adding your own content though, like adding your own models into the film, that is what I mean by taking too many creative liberties, that is going too far IMHO.

In my mind that is no longer a fanedit because you are doing more than just editing or colour grading, you're adding new stuff, things that were never in the film to begin with. I have too much respect for the filmmaker's original vision and the craftmanship that went into making the films to watch a version of these classics with new content added by someone else not connected to the original production.

I was wondering the same thing.

For sharpest DVD quality, I have:

Star Wars: DeEdV2 (amazing authentic coloring on this one)

Empire: ESB 2.0

Return of the Jedi: currently no authentic alternative

Then for what the films would have actually looked like, we have:

Negative1 scans (not yet released)

And for 1997 editions I see no high-quality NTSC alternative.

But why would anyone talk about a preservation project in the preservation forum?

Sorry, that would be my fault. I'm too new.

Blasphemy. Revisited is about as good as DVD can get, and looks better than most upconverted.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000
