Actually, not only is the Mary Poppins BD not badly cropped like the DVD, it also doesn't suffer from DNR and the color is much more correct and pleasing.
It's definitely a new master.
I'm curious. For Mary Poppins, you never mentioned the blu-ray. Purist it might not be, but how is the aspect ratio? Is it cropped the same way as the newer dvd or does it look accurate?

Yeah, something else that probably needs to be updated on the list. I thought I had heard bad things about it... must start list of the latest releases.

Overall good, but a naive sharpener was used, so the grain is really, really pronounced like the BD release of Earthquake (1974).
A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.
I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Completely amused by "naive sharpener", but I get your meaning.

Yeah, just a silly 3x3 kernel for sharpening, applied with no grain reduction at all. I love grain, but this is GrainCity™!

Can you post comparison pictures between the japanese ld, the american archive ld, the 2001 dvd and the recent blu-ray? Also, is the dvd that comes with the blu ray the blu ray transfer or the oddball cropped transfer?

It makes me wonder if it is just an HD transfer of the same Lowry restoration that they've been using. The sharpening was unpleasant on the DVD releases as well.

There was quite a bit of discussion over at the HTF that the animated sequences did have DNR.
Where were you in '77?
I just noticed that there is a Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition coming out in a few weeks.
I'm confused, I had thought the last BD was a DE. Anyone have any knowledge of what to expect from this? I can't imagine they can "restore" it anymore than they already have.

It's the same disc (same transfer, even the same trailers announcing old blu-rays like "pinocchio" and "the princess and the frog")
Technically, the first BD was Platinum, way back in 2006.
@jolennon, how do you know it's the same disc? have you gotten your copy earlier?

I'm sorry, people at dvdizzy said that it was the same disc, but looks like they're wrong.
Here's the press release:
Doesn't say it isn't the same transfer though.

I'm still holding to the hope that it's the same master, only without DNR.

Please, please, please tell me you mean without.

Oh god, mea culpa...of course, without...
Although there shouldn't be much grain to be had, the source being 70mm, and they have scanned the ON.
Thoughts?
@Handman - I think she is armed with a lot of misinformation. Disney archiving their films on VHS? Detail is lost because the source was painted? The digital alterations are okay because they look better than what the animators intended? There are many more silly statements.
She's welcome to her thoughts, but her arguments aren't very convincing.
Dr. M
Yeah, her credibility went right off a cliff with that VHS archiving thing.

Looks like Sleeping Beauty's Diamond Edition has the same transfer as the Platinum

Looks like October will be chock full of recycled transfers.
The 229 minutes version of Once Upon a Time in America, the 75th anniversary Blu ray of Gone With The Wind, and now this...
I was able to find a few versions of The Lion King ripped form laser disc on my favorite Russian tracker. One is fullscreen with better color I feel. That movie seems just perfect for somebody to try to do a good preservation of.
The DVD changes were also in the VHS?
I have it but can't remember..

Just in the 2004 (Special Edition/Platinum) VHS
