It's interesting but It doesn't look very OTish to me. It reminds more of a modern orange and teal grade.

Thats some of the greatest insult I can only think of for a project of it's kind.

The original Prequel Trilogy has so much colors, so vivid, overblown and the whole thing looks like a ugly mashup made by a colorblind person. So any efforts made to get away from this look is a masterful decision on it's own.

So I wish the absolute best for this project, still.

I agree you simply can hardly get rid of the PT look. But as long those pre-Star Destroyers have their magenta color ting removed and magenta all over the walls at every place, that's a great improvement!

Now It might become hard to not steer into Teal/Orange territory. Maintaining a natural blue not steering into the turquoise and maybe reducing the red's (skin) a little tiny bit would be second priority.

Can you explain to me what the purpose of your project?

I do not understand.... you said your goal was to make these movies to look older and with less color. Your last clip had more color than the original movie, i don't get it...

Yeah, that's really it. The skin tones are more saturated and warm and the blues have been pushed to turquoise, I think that's what gave me the orange/teal impression.

okay, well the plan is I am thinking about doing two different versions of the grade.  One that looks older and more like the OT, and one that looks newer and so reflects some more modern grading styles.

I've watched the entire ROTS movie (and part of ATOC/TPM) with both types of grades and they improve the films on a visual level a great amount, but in different ways.

But, more importantly, the reason I decided for this split is that so far I haven't felt very satisfied with my OT-like color grade.  It looks straight out of the late 80's in some parts and in other parts look like the footage was processed to hell.  I really want an OT version just as much as many of you want, but until I can perfect it (which is going to be a while), I prefer to release a version that looks much better, but is distinct from the OT look, which makes it easier to accomplish given the source.

An example of the OT grade issues I've had is the highlight recovery.  There are certain parts where the Bluray compression limits REALLY show through, and it ruins it.

I appreciate that approach. Some people would prefer to have them look as much like the OT as possible, and others not. For my fan edit project, which works under the philosophy that these are indeed prequels, it would be more appropriate to use the first version. I'm maintaining their prequel nature, so all I'm after is a filmic look.

The buzz droids in that last clip is my favorite part. They look like they belong there, not like a CG addition.

My stance on revising fan edits.

This looks great. I'd second the request for a screen shot comparison from there as well.

One look at Harmy's Despecialized edition will tell you that less color =/= older. Even SW '77 has some orange and blue tinting going on, particularly in the Death Star.

Go watch The Adventures of Robin Hood and then tell me that older films had less color.

Or any 3-strip technicolor film for that matter.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I have uploaded these sounds to spleen if they are of use to this project. If you don't have an account then just pm me.

I am proud to say I remember the 80’s!

Oh man, this is awesome! Love the new clip, and the clarity you were able to get out of that deleted scene - very impressive. Looking forward to seeing both versions of this project once finished!

Any new developments?

Hate to be that guy, but I cannot understand the notion that you started all over again, making a contemporary yet traditionally shot film look more contemporary.  Bringing it closer to this over-used color palette kind of defeats the purpose, since SW films have a classic, timeless cinematography that never succumbed to the flavour of the month (or decade in this case). The footage and the screenshots both feel dominated by orange and teal to the point it is somewhat distracting.

That said, the Battle of Coruscant clip was an interesting alternative viewing experience. I especially liked the contrast and the grain. I can't help but wish you had stuck to the style you had gradually perfected in the months prior, though.

Would love to hear an update!  I find this project very interesting.

It's been a while since there's been an update. How goes the recoloring? I'm still eagerly awaiting the release of any of these versions of the prequels.

I hope this project is still alive....
