I'm honestly confused.

In February (?) 220 lb American Football Hero Ray Rice was suspended for two games for knocking his fiance out.

Yesterday, he was fired and indefinitely suspended for having knocked his fiance out back in February.

I'm honestly confused. Has something changed? None of the stories are clear. Can any sports-types here help me?

Hold on. You say he punched a woman and also refer to him as a hero?

Kinda poking fun that in America we very often call people who are good at moving balls around a field quickly 'heroes.'

maybe just a cultural divide? - I see you also use the term 'Football' to describe a game where grown men run around, tackle each other and dance.

They shouldn't even count as members of the human race.

As a skateboarder I can almost agree with this.

I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that we agree with you that cops should go on trial for murder when they do so, and I also agree with you that cops get away with a lot more than any normal citizen could dream of getting away with. The problem is, you lump all of the good cops in with the bad cops since they wear the same uniform. It's no different than saying all Christians are like the Westboro Baptist Church, or that all Muslims are like the terrorists, or that all football players are like Ray Rice

If there really are good cops out there they must be in hiding. Truely good cops would rat out the bad cops and get them kicked out.  If Cops want me to respect them then they would clean things up and insist that cops be held to the same standard as your average citizen but that is not what happens. Cops cover for each other and the ones that are not racist are on the take and working for the gangs.  They are nothing but thugs with badges.  I'll respect cops once I start seeing them go to jail for their crimes and stop gunning people down in the streets.

Until then I will regard them as the enemy of every decent citizen who doesn't want to be murdered or shaken down on the streets.

I agree cops covering for bad cops is and can a big problem.   However, for a cop to turn in another cop, isn't easy.   For them, it is like turning in a brother.   They have to trust each other with their lives.   If they can't trust each other, they can't do their jobs.  Its a lot easier for for us to say that cops should turn in bad cops then it is for a cop to so.   I do wish there was an easy way to change that culture, to make it easier for cops to do the right  thing.   I am sure many of them wish it was too.  Still this doesn't excuse the sick and offensive things you say about cops,  DrCrow.    I am very seriously considering putting on ignore until you apologize for saying this sh**.

So you are saying that it's okay for cops to cover up for each other because they feel close.  So you are in fact saying that cops should be above the law and allowed to do whatever they want with no penalty because they are cops and us lowly citizen can't question anything they do.

I just want them to face the same penalties for crime that the rest of us face but right now there is no way to bring them to justice because they cover for each other so until that changes I will not trust them.

Here is a thought why don't we have a federal agency that's only job is to investigate dirty cops and make the penalty for violating a citizen's rights life in prison? Dirty cops should go away for life and if it comes out that other cops knew about the corruption and didn't say anything they go away for life to. That way their desire to not spend the rest of their life in prison may outweigh their feelings of brotherhood.

Look Maybe you should ignore me since we are never going to agree.  You think cops are some higher form of life who the law shouldn't apply to and that anyone who says any cop is dirty is evil.  I think cops are most corrupt and drunk on power because they have been given way too much power and the citizens have no control over them any more. I don't think a feeling of brotherhood is a good excuse for covering up a crime and I think cops should face the same penalties as every other citizen when they commit a crime. You think they shouldn't.  I like you Warb but on this one issue we are never going to agree so I guess if you can't over look that then you should ignore me.

that is not what I said.   Imagine you knew that the right thing to do was was to turn your brother in for a crime he commited(I am not saying your brother actually committed any crime.  I don't even know if you have a brother.)   But what if you knew that the if you did turn your brother in, all your other brothers and sisters would not want to speak to you ever again or have anything to do with you.   Imagine if turning your brother in for a crime he committed would also mean the rest of your family wouldn't want anything to do with you and that none of your family would ever trust you again.  Imagine if it meant you might have to quit your job as well.  You still know what the right thing to do is, but it wouldn't be easy for you to do, would it?  That was my point.

I just want them to face the same penalties for crime that the rest of us face

I do too.

but right now there is no way to bring them to justice because they cover for each other so until that changes I will not trust them.

but I bet if you go home and find that your house was burglerized, or that you that, God forbid, one of your family members was assaulted/raped/murdered,  that your first call would be to the cops, wouldn't it?

Here is a thought why don't we have a federal agency that's only job is to investigate dirty cops

I am not sure I'd have a problem with that, but some might say it violates states rights.  Perhaps each state should have such an agency.

and make the penalty for violating a citizen's rights life in prison? Dirty cops should go away for life and if it comes out that other cops knew about the corruption and didn't say anything they go away for life to. That way their desire to not spend the rest of their life in prison may outweigh their feelings of brotherhood.

for life? everytime? no matter what exactly the violation is?  no matter what?  You have heard of the eighth amemdment right?(the one against cruel and unusual punishment)

Look Maybe you should ignore me since we are never going to agree.  You think cops are some higher form of life who the law shouldn't apply to and that anyone who says any cop is dirty is evil.

That's not what I said.   I don't believe they are any higher form of life.   But I don't believe they are any lower either, which is what you basically said they were.   The law should diffinitely apply to them, but so should the rights and freedoms that we all have.  No, I don't think anyone that says any cop is dirty is evil.   There are dirty cops, nothing wrong with saying so.  But it is wrong to say that they are all dirty, and it is sick, offensive, and evil to say that they should all be killed(and that you cheer everytime a cop gets killed).

I don't think a feeling of brotherhood is a good excuse for covering up a crime

never said it was, it just makes a cop exposing a crime another cops does very difficult.

and I think cops should face the same penalties as every other citizen when they commit a crime. You think they shouldn't.

no, I actually think they should face the same penalties, but they are also entitled to same presumption of innocence, the same rights that we have when we are accused of a crime, and that they, like we, are not guilty until proven so beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

I like you Warb but on this one issue we are never going to agree so I guess if you can't over look that then you should ignore me.

 We shall see.

DrCrow, out of curiosity, have you ever met a real live policeman?

I'm beginning to suspect that DrCrow actually lives in an alternate, dystopian reality which overlaps with our own, and that everything he says is true where he's from. He shares the alternate reality with generalfrivous and perhaps thejediknightthewhatsit among others.

Yeah i have met real cops and each time it has been horrid.

The last time was when my brother took a friend to the emergency room, she had a history of drug use and had been found on the floor of her bathroom passed out and the cop who came in did his best to try and trap my brother into admitting something that would let the cop arrest him for attempted murder. He even went so far as to threaten to lock up my brother until he confessed.  This despite the fact that the girl had been brought in for this sort of thing before and my brother has never so much as gotten a speeding ticket.  All the cop cared about wasn't the truth but finding an excuse to beat on someone who had just tried to help another member of the human race.

Cops don't care about helping they care about throwing people in jail and finding an excuse to beat people up that is what they get promotions for not finding the truth, they couldn't care less about the truth of any case so yeah I have interacted with cops and found them to be drunk on their own sense of power and ready to abuse it at the drop of a hat.

I am sorry if this upsets you but based on my interactions with cops I have found them to be no good and I will never trust a cop as long as I live, sorry but that is just the way it is.  Maybe you are lucky enough to live in an area with good cops but where I live it seems all the cops are either dirty or just out of control so that is how I view them and I don't trust or respect them.

As a broader question for DrCrow, do you ever take a moderate view on anything or is everything always an extreme for you?

That's a true story and there is more to it.  My brother was 17 at the time and the cop wouldn't let him talk to my dad or a layer and when we tried to file a complaint we were told it was our word against the cops and even with witnesses the cop's word was what counted. I am not making any of this up. Cops are above the law and live to abuse people, that is what I have learned from my life so I'm sorry if you think they are all heroes good for you but to me the only difference between a cop and a crook is that a cop has a badge and can never be arrested for any crime.

I have more stories if you want them but I think you can now see where I am coming from and why I have no love for cops.

So tell me, If I interacted with a few bad black people, does that mean I have the right to say that they are all bad and should all be killed?   Quit assuming that all cops are like the ones you interacted with.

btw, who told you that even with witnesses it was the cops word was what counted?  Did you at least seek advice from a lawyer before giving up trying to go after this bad cop that violated your brother's right to an attorney?

I'd be interested in hearing these other stories.

So if my experiences with cops were all good, should I assume that they are all saints?

Wouldn't it make more sense to form an opinion by getting as much data as possible, rather than basing a conclusion on only those experiences of one type?
