Supposedly, this version aired on Encore in great quality, and in the original aspect ratio.  Does anyone have this?  One forum member claimed to, and has promised to send it to me, but at this point, I’ve literally waited for him to find the time for years.  I’m coming back here to plea for anyone else who may have this to please send it my way.  It’s one of my favorite films, and my wife’s as well.  We would love to have a copy of this, as we both remember it airing with all of these additions - 36 minutes is a huge difference.  I really hope someone here can help out.  Thanks so much, guys.  I appreciate it very much.

Just giving this topic a bump.  No one has this?  :(

I can tell you I have never heard of an ENCORE version, there is a Waterworld Encore version but not a Far and Way.

I am very sure the only time this aired was on it's original run on ABC to pad time.

Sadly, the DVD is the theatrical version

In fact Far and Away was on USA the other day and it was the theatrical version. USA Network is notorious for play TV versions so if it is not played there then the chances are slim. There is a station known as Ovation which tends to play TV version once in a while but it's random.

Well that's quite interesting coming from you.  Especially considering these posts of yours from nine years ago...and the fact that you strung me along for literally years via email saying you'd snail mail me a copy of this.

coming from you.

I'd be interested in the 176m cut, as long as long as it isn't DVD-quality. HD hopefully in 1080p would be great.

very rude of you after I responded to you on this. Anyhow, I think back then i miss typed that i had a Far and Away Encore version, I believe the conversation was about Waterworld.

Anyhow, in the years since I dug through my garage and did manage to find the actual tape from ABC. There has been a one disc version from TBS that has floated around but i can tell you I do have the ABC cut. There is no Encore version that I know of. Possibly, that was ll a misunderstanding.

anyhow, IM me and we can discuss it further. Sorry that i somehow wronged you. I usually helped people out.

Considering this was only ever aired on ABC, I don't think you're going to find this in 1080p.  Too bad they can't just release a nice special edition with the scenes as deleted extras.  Then it'd be pretty easy to make a fan edit that matches the ABC cut.

Just an update, I'm still waiting on Mitch for this.  I haven't heard back from him in several days now (he hasn't been online since the 18th).  Initially, I was supposed to get this from him on the 17th, but still nothing.  Guess we'll see...I'll let you know if anything changes.

This was supposed to be going up on the spleen last night.  Haven't seen it yet, but I'll post back here if it shows up.

It's VHS quality, but I've so far gotten the first half of this.  I'll post back once I have the rest, hopefully within the next few days.  I'll try and confirm the score question, too.  This is definitely one of Williams's best scores.

EDIT: I've still only gotten the first half.  Still waiting for the second...

Ransom, another film by Ron Howard is in a similar situation. The director's cut is only available on Laserdisc.

You sure are demanding.  Posting a blow by blow in a thread of your impatience isn't very good etiquette here.  Please learn some patience and learn to post with better manners.  It will get you a lot farther.

No disrespect meant, just saying.

You may want to have all the information before accusing someone of being either demanding or impatient.  First of all, just for the record, I waited over two years for this to be put up.  Not weeks.  Not months.  YEARS.  That's not a complaint, I'm just stating a fact.  Maybe you're in the habit of asking for something and hoping it shows up three or four years later, but I'd hardly consider this impatient on my part.  I made one testy post, and I think I had just cause for it at the time.  And we later discussed it privately and sorted things out to our mutual satisfaction.  I don't believe I've shown poor manners to anyone else in this thread.  If so, I apologize.

As for the post you're quoting, I was only trying to be helpful to the previous poster who also showed interest in this.  I knew they were wanting it as well, so I was just letting them know the status from my end.  I wasn't trying to give a blow-by-blow of how I felt about it one way or the other.

On the plus side, mitch was *awesome* and did get this dubbed for me, and I appreciate it more than he knows.  If there's still interest (and with mitch's permission, of course), I may upload it to the spleen...if that's not too "blow-by-blow" of me to say.  ;)  j/k

Like I said, I was just saying.  I got that impression from reading the posts.  If that's not how you meant it, then all is well.  I'm sure you've noticed that we get a lot of people who come and go here just looking to snag Harmy's work and what not and then they seem to expect instant gratification.  I've been here awhile and I know exactly what joy patience brings.

I'm certainly glad you got the hook up and are willing to share it with others.  The more folks that can find such things are usually happier to stick around and maybe share other things people are looking for.

A win - win all the way around.

Absolutely!  I'm totally okay with the constructive criticism.  Thanks for being cool about it.  :)  I was just a tad frustrated when the thread began, but it's water under the bridge.  I didn't take any offense, I hope you didn't, either.  Just wanted to explain myself.

Oh, of course there is still interest, if it would be possible from both ends!!

Although I don't understand what's the story with the dubbing..

Any chance of some screenshots?

I just meant that he got it recorded into digital format from his VHS tape.

Sure, here you go!  As I said...a bit rough, but totally watchable.

Thank you very much!

If you could upload this it would be great!

Although, to tell you the truth, I wouldn't be watching the whole film, I'd prefer to buy the Bluray and watch it, and watch only the deleted scenes from this one.

have you identified all the deleted scenes that were included here with timecodes etc.?

I don't know the film so well, so I'm not sure I would be able to do it.

Author

I definitely could, but I haven't watched this all the way through yet.  What I'd love to do is add in just the extra footage from this source to the blu-ray copy.

I’ve reconstructed the longer cut of Far and Away using the blu-ray wherever possible and the TV footage where necessary. The aspect ratio shifts from 2.39:1 to 1.33:1 for extra scenes (with a constant image height). I’ve retained the 5.1 audio from the blu-ray as well, so it shifts from 5.1 to 2.0 during the TV footage. Right now I have a 16.2GB file with LPCM 5.1 audio. I’m going to share this on the spleen. I can save some of that file size by encoding the audio to DTS-HD MA 5.1 instead if that is preferred, but I didn’t want to limit the release to people who can playback DTS-HD MA 5.1 tracks. Is there a preference for the LPCM 5.1 audio or the DTS-HD MA 5.1?

PS: The running time is 169 mins, 21 secs (there was a recap of Part I on the second night along with a second round of opening credits which I believe accounts for the extra couple of minutes, and this was obviously excised for my continuous cut).

Thanks for doing this, I’m looking forward to seeing the extended cut. Just a thought, surely the transition between the Blu-ray and TV footage (aspect ratios and picture quality) is going to be really jarring? Would it not work out better to just show the TV version as it is, warts and all?
