How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4 — Page 69

We could try Dobutsu Shogi. No, we haven't played Nana Shogi yet. There's also Whale/Kujira Shogi, Yari Shogi, Cannon Shogi, and Hand Shogi. I'd like to try some of those as well.

As for the Wa Shogi game, I think it's been too long since we've played it to just pick up where we left off. If we play again I'd rather just start over.

So, take your pick. If it's Dobutsu Shogi, go ahead and make your move. Otherwise give me a chance to download a game file.

Well, let's play a game of Dobutsu, then a game of Nana, and then we can try some of those others.

Now a game this small kind of gives an advantage to the first player.  For that reason, I will make a move that I don't think is bad, but isn't best, hopefully to even it out.

Do you mean G-3C?

I'm assuming so since it's the only move you can make with that piece right now. Assuming I don't have my board wrong, that is.

Also, what are the rules for promoting? Is it just chick=pawn to hen=gold general? I don't see any others listed on Wikipedia.

Well, truthfully my board has no labels, so I could be wrong, but traditionally shogi numbers its boards from right to left and from top to bottom.  Since my giraffe is on the right, it would be column 1, would it not?  Yes, only the chick promotes, and exactly as you described.  And though I am away from my board right now, I believe I would probably play Gx2c

Ah, my mistake. I forgot how the numbering worked.

Isn't that an orthogonal move? I was under the impression that giraffes were the rough equivalent of rooks, not bishops....

Author

Oops, it was my mistake.  I put the numbers and letters in the wrong place in my head.  I meant G-A3.  I Hope that's where I remembered correctly this time.  Silly me.

Gee, I can't even get my words right. I meant diagonal, not orthogonal.

I don't see any improvement with your new move. Now you're moving like a knight.

Here's my board:

I have a chick in hand.

(Comment from Frink in 3...2...1...)

Is that what you're seeing too? I'd also better verify that the numbers go right to left and the letters go top to bottom.

Sorry my friend.  I know exactly what I wanted to do, but I was being too lazy to look it up and was forgetting the orientation I just told you a few posts up.  I wanted the giraffe to go immediately to the right.  G-1c.  I don't have the coordinates on my board, and I have the board on my Kindle, and I wasn't using any reference as a guide.

In retrospect, I probably should have made a different move, but since that is the move I'd intended to post twice already, I will stick with it.

G-3b.

Sorry I didn't see that you had posted. I thought you still hadn't played.

Author

No problem, but we're back on different pages. :) Is G-2c your move? If so, L-3a.

I think I keep reversing the letters and numbers.  I have made an excel sheet so I can better keep track of the game.  I like using the Kindle though, as it has the actual cute characters like the official game.  The move I meant to make was...ah crap, I don't even know why I typed G before because on the board I moved my elephant.  Hmmm...I'm sorry I keep screwing this up.  I promise the move I meant to make was with the elephant, and I meant to move to 2c.

E-2c

Hopefully I won't keep making these mistakes now that I've made a board on Excel with the coordinates.  Again, sorry for so much air-headedness.

No worries, as long as I get to call you airhead every time you mess up. ;)

Okay, when I wasn't paying attention to positions as well, I did things wrong when you dropped your chick.  As a result, I didn't realize my giraffe was in trouble.  In a game this small, this likely will spell doom for me, but that's okay since I was being dumb and not paying enough attention to positions.  So I will just continue playing despite my obvious disadvantage.

Lx1c

Sorry again for not paying better attention.

Oh, I noticed that someone posted a file for Yonin Shogi up at the Zillions website.  That's the four player game played on a standard 81 square board.  Might want to check it out, though we don't seem to have any luck finding others who'd like to join us.  Hey, perhaps your dad might want to join us for a game of Kokusai Sannin?  Want to ask him?

Sure, I'll ask my dad if he wants to join us for a game of Kokusai Sannin. I couldn't find a game file on Zillions and a Google search yielded no results. Do you know where I can download it from?

I have some software you can use, though it will probably require VirtualBox and an older OS to play.  I think it was programmed for DOS.  But it works if you're willing to put forth the effort.  Or if you prefer, you and your dad can construct a simple set and play at home while I follow along electronically here.  It only requires two sets of shogi pieces (which I have made out of simple bakeable clay) and the appropriately sized grid of hexes.

I think I'd rather use the program--it's easier. Will it run on DOSBox?

Just sent you a PM.  Same message.  I don't know if it runs on DOSBox or if it only runs on a 32 bit OS's MSDOS Prompt.  You're welcome to try either way.

I guess you did send me that game file. Sorry, I should have checked, but I forgot you'd sent me all those.
