Shame I have nothing to capture it with

Initially, you're good for making quick caps of the individual shots -- for excellent color-correction reference (if you do, please post them).

Thereafter, contact other(s) here who can do this trailer justice with a pro-quality scan. That, of course, would be awesome.

First off, WOW! That trailer is in awesome condition. Wonder if there's a 35mm floating around of the whole movie...

and, as promised, here's an alternate link for the OST...

Enjoy;o)

So the film is hard matted to 1.85:1?

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

The trailer is never a good indicator as they can be odd ratios

Well, the opening titles on the DVD and the screen caps I've seen from the Japanese laserdisc are in 1.85:1, so it's possible that the film was actually hard matted to 1.85:1 but it's hard to say for sure without seeing an actual film print.

@ jerryshadoe

Thanks for the alternate links -- sendspace just plain works.  :)

.

If I had to guess from these previously noted YouTube videos ..

.. I'd say we couldn't get that fullscreen cutting into the matte area of the widescreen if it was a hard matte -- unless the documentary and/or the laserdisc did some cropping on it's own widescreen.

Are there any matching shots to compare the new 35mm trailer to the available documentary and/or laserdisc caps?

Author

Hm. But then why would they need to letterbox the credits?

It's also possible that the widescreen scenes in the documentary further matted the original widescreen frames.  There's a lot here that doesn't add up and probably won't add up unless an original film print is found.  If the movie was shot open-matte, as the video to documentary comparison would indicate, why would they even do a pan-and-scan version at all?  Even if it was shot in scope, having more information at the top of the full-frame version that is not in the widescreen version makes no sense.

For what it's worth, the YouTube's movie, overlapped onto it's LD test capture video, shows an over-shoot similar to the other fullscreen-widescreen compare:

BTW, sometimes, when shooting fullscreen to be soft-matted for widescreen, the area around the widescreen safe-area is not "clean" of things like microphone, or no front-cockpit-of-the-plane, or some such. That might require a fullscreen release to take the extra step of cropping. The US laserdisc was "officially released" as fullscreen (beats me why) and all those public domain DVDs probably used it as their source (beats me why, too).

I ordered an original UK quad poster from Ebay now! I am in deep lol

I can find some non landscape shots but am worried it will fall apart or get torn or something

One of these might be nice to use:

But you're right about being gentle with the trailer. Could it be a 1/4 century old?  :O
Maybe you could jury-rig something similar to the above editor. It just looks like a couple of plates on the table.

Yeah, i forget what shipping to Australia is for 1 trailer reel. Although i suppose that depends on where you live.

I am in the UK and the weight is not too bad really

I have both the fullscreen and widescreen laserdisc of Slipstream. If someone wants to make a good digital transfer, I would be happy to send them.

Thanks!

Maybe satanika's access to the JP laserdisc could get things started -- probably the JP widescreen laserdisc overlaid by the US fullscreen laserdisc in the hard-coded subtitles area (with color-matching, of course).

Or ... Pineapples101 has a blog and indicates access to the JP laserdisc. Might be worth a contact, too.

.

I really like Space Kaijuu's suggestion of film ...

eBay - SLIPSTREAM: 35mm CINEMA MOVIE FILM TRAILER:1989: Mark Hamill, Bill Paxton

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SLIPSTREAM-35mm-CINEMA-MOVIE-FILM-TRAILER-1989-Mark-Hamill-Bill-Paxton-/221532044285

Granted, it's only a trailer ... but it could be a good color-correction source. If you get it, definitely post caps!

Just to confirm - I unfortunately do not have access to the Japanese Laserdisc :(
I'm just a fan of the film and a collector of stuff.

Add me to the list of people that would love to see a widescreen release of this film.
Has anyone considered contacting the director?

I looked for contact details a month ago and found nothing

I know I'm putting this out there for others and not actually doing the hard work myself but...

* Steven Lisberger
Gary Kurtz
Mark Hamill

These would be top of my lists for people to contact, Kurtz and Hamill are always at Cons doing signings.

Steven Lisberger - what are the chances that he might be contactable via Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski? Does he have a facebook / twitter?

Once again, just putting this out there...

I wish for the best of luck for anyone wishing to pursue this, but I know from the torturous saga of the people trying to release the soundtrack album that the actual owners of the rights of this film don't care about it.

A good quality widescreen HD release would be nice, but the original elements may be long gone.

I wonder if taking both the full screen and letterboxed laserdiscs, and use them together to cancel the japanese subtitles could work... -> Overlap Matching
