THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released) — Page 73

If I find the courage and I finish working on the Italian subtitles (I'm almost at the end) will you mind adding them to the project? As you said, it's low priority but it would be nice to have multilanguage subs.

Can anyone update me on the current THX project... how it evolved and where we are at now? I got confused many pages and many years ago. Thank you

... unless there's a glitch in the matrix, I should be ready for a release sometime soon.

Cool! (hopefully some raw/processed compared caps?)

The raw will go on Usenet (a.b.sw) and the median-of-three'd DVD will go on MySpleen and Usenet.

The DVD will be the LD. By this I mean: every frame on the LD will be preserved down to the last one before the A->B side-change and the last one at the end of side B. There will be no menu, but the chapters from the LD will be ported over. The only audio option will be the English 1.0 PCM track from the LD. I'm still on-the-fence as to whether or not to AC3ify it or to just include it raw.

I'd like to include subs and/or CC despite not being present on the LD. This is low priority at the moment.

JEDIT: Whoops, I missed the word "caps"! Silly me. Those are coming soon as well.

Is the audio digital or analogue? If it's the latter, I don't think you'd be missing much by compressing the audio (it's FM so nothing sonically impressive). I feel like in the case of DVD, the video compression should not take a hit at the expense of a needless PCM soundtrack.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

At least consider a high bitrate? Too many mono mixes are regulated to 192kps Dolby Digital, even on Blu Ray.

I was thinking of using 224Kbps. Too low?

No mention of the new scenes pasted on afterwards of course.

Nobody seems to know if THX was part of the deal. It might be jointly owned/controlled by Warner and American Zoetrope? Disney had to deal with Paramount to fully own Indiana Jones, but THX might not be something they really want.

I think it's all Warner, the DVD has no other studio on it (compared zoetrope stuff like Conversation or Apocalypse Now which are through lionsgate). The main thing to worry about is if Warner signed some unfortunate agreement with Lucasfilm that stated Lucas would pay for all the restoration and enhancements but would have final say over any content.

384Kbps would be nice. There is only going to be one audio track?

In that case I can just max it out at 448Kbps. I'll do that.

Question: Does DVD support 1.0 PCM tracks?

JEDIT: Seems like it does: http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/DVD/Book_B/Audio.html

In this case, the PCM will only be ~475MiB. That's sufficiently small for my purposes.

OK, so that's 768Kbps for audio, leaving me with 9312Kbps for video. I'll use HCenc to VBR the video between 8Mbps and 9.25Mbps to leave a little room.

There's still going to be a generous amount of space left on a DVD9. Can someone tell me how big the "BALD" stream is on the DVD? It's a classic documentary, so it would make sense to have it as a second title.

Also, can someone hook me up with that extended SEN scene scan?

Lastly, is there a list of pre-2004 trailers somewhere?

Didn't realize you were going dual layer with this. We still need to get the tv spot properly scanned down the line.

The 1978 trailer is around in good quality. If I don't still have it, msycamore should.

I also think the two music videos heavily influenced by the film would make good extras. Calling All Girls doesn't seem to have ever been included on any official Queen video release I can find. All the Youtube versions are dodgy.

From Google: ""Calling All Girls" was issued in USA (only) in the VHS called "Queen Collection - 15 of their best"."

About a year ago, for me to continue msycamore's project, he mailed out a copy of it's resources, only for the carriers to "lose" it. To this day, it (or any of it's pieces) never arrived ...

  • Is this any way to run global delivery services? "For more enjoyment and greater efficiency, lost mail is being standardized."  :/

He had a link to sample scenes from the 16mm, which included the lost SEN scene. In quickly scanning this thread, I found that all previous download-links were dead (being short-timed or low activity). Also related, a certain image posting shack (who's name I shall not mention) completely wiped away all their holdings of our early snapshots displayed in this thread!

  • Is this any way to run an Internet posting service? "For more enjoyment and greater efficiency, lost pictures is being standardized."  :O

I think he started to do something with that sample, using my Avisynth script that put it together in sync. Check with him if it's any form to use.

If not, I can give you what I've got. As a raw-red 16mm sample, complete with sprocket holes showing, it's pretty cool! (I was doing some restoration proof-of-concepts, as previously posted, but that's far from finished and I'm presently out of time for any more real work on it or any of the rest of the project).

I'm sure all the original people can chime in to update you on resources thought to be included ..

.. so you won't need to read through the entire thread.

News just came in that a close friend of mine, Ty (disclord@LDDb), has died.

He's the reason I have the Runco LJR-II.

This project will be dedicated to his memory.

Fuck. :-(

That's terrible news. He seemed like a nice guy and his knowledge was second to none. He was the reason I picked up a Shure HTS for Dolby Stereo/Surround decoding. I was always hopeful he would eventually contribute here at the OT. He will be missed.

I'm very sorry to hear this. I had messaged him through AVS and he never got back to me. I just figured he was very busy. I was asking him about the T2 CDS mix and he seemed to know so much about the format.

Can someone help me calibrate these color bars? I pulled 'em from GGV1069 and did the capture the same way I did my THX 1138 captures. I can provide a 10-bit sample, if needed.

Colorbars... Yay!

"THX, this is Inner Control. You're off point 0 1 7 to the right. Correct it please."

Some time ago, I worked up a demonstration color-bars graphic, labeled with the standard's RGB numbers, for my future reference. The displayed colors are just for show but the numbers are the actual targets:

Your posted color-bars shows to be just a little off, by measuring the white (235,235,235) and black (16,16,16) areas:

In digital correction, the dark end of the spectrum should be raised a bit and the light end lowered a bit more. In capturing, this translates into a little less contrast, and sliding the resulting spectrum into the proper place with brightness (depending on how your hardware implements it's controls). When adjusted, all the rest of the colors fall roughly into their proper values. Finer tuning may require tint and color adjustments (but I have yet to work out those RGB equivalents to make further recommendations).

Son of a...

This is really unexpected. He was easily one of the most knowledgeable Film/AV people I have ever encountered online or in person (and I've met/known a LOT, including Oscar winners)

This is what I posted over there:

This is...really unexpected and very sad. I feel as if there are already conversations about our favorite topics I will never have.

We are a very small tight knit community on here, and I cannot even count the number of times Disclord revealed valuable and very detailed information on topics that even myself as a lifelong film devotee and film school grad had no clue about. (Such as the RAIDERS mix originally being in the abandoned VistaSonic format or all the varied usages of Sensurround)
His posts were always warm and friendly and down to earth which is not always a paramount on the Internet.

He will be sorely missed and even though most of us only knew him through the lddb, will always be the Disc Lord.

...

Getting back to the topic at hand, I've been looking at a Canopus ADVC box (recommended by Vidiot over on SHTV) but there are various editions, I lack Firewire, and I have no idea about it having a comb filter.

I would say to do the LD PCM as it is, since we've had no copy done losslessly and the LD is very expensive/hard to come by.
