Slipstream 1989 (WIP)

I have the UK dvd, a poor LD/VHS rip by the looks of it but am wondering if there is a better version?

There was a Widescreen LD but it looks to be rare and wanted better quality.

Since it is now public domain I don’t think we need to worry about legal stuff now.

I am normally the guy who finds stuff but either my google-fu is lacking or there is nothing to be found.

Info I can find on the Uk and US dvd’s http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=11258

So in this thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/SLIPSTREAM-image-request-AND-WIDESCREEN-preservation-request-Sky-Movies-subscribers-see-posts-4-onwards/topic/9379/

focuspuller claims to have a Japanese LD rip of the movie which is the only know copy of this movie in widescreen and it needs to be color regraded. As far as any other sources or posts on the internet, (aside from the DVD you mentioned in your post) they do NOT exist. The supposed HDTV transfer is just a stretched copy of the P&S edition and it's quality sucks as well. The "HDTV" transfer I'm referring to is the crappy youtube post.

I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but it is what it is ;o)

Wow ... poor Slipstream ... stuck in full-screen low-quality Public Domain Hell ...

(It's Hercules [Steve Reeves] all over again!)

Apparently, it was once broadcast in widescreen on German TV IMDB - Slipstream (1989) : Widescreen???; caps from the TV-to-VHS-to-DVD are at the mentioned German forum:

It's a shame that the German TV broadcast had the vhs in-between there and there was a HUGE loss of quality as a result...

Still if someone that has access to, both, the Japanese widescreen Laserdisc and the German TV widescreen broadcast, there's a possibility for a project to remove the hardcoded subtitles. The result wouldn't be perfect, but I guess it could be done if one wants the best *possible* widescreen edition.

Hmm, so it was not my google-fu that was faulty, I need to do a ton more research then

Amazon UK Customer Review: M. Hevingham "Mark Hevingham" said:

Like the VHS and laser disc releases this movie is ruined on DVD by a ten minute cut and pretty awful cropping of the image.

When it was shown on TV (Sky movies in around 1990) it was shown 4:3 but with the full running time which is shorter by around 10 minutes in the home video release. ...

The film was shot in 2.35:1 and is cropped here to 4:3, momentarily appearing in 16:9 within the 4:3 frame to accommodate the movie's title.

I watched beyond some of the widescreen opening (wide only for the title) of a fullscreen Slipstream at YouTube. I also noted that the end credits list Panavision and Panaflex equipment. Could it be that Slipstream was a cinemascreen production, as the Amazon reviewer states? In those early minutes of the pan & scan video, there is a shot that starts at the right and quickly pans left to following the action. Putting together those two extremes showed what the original shot might've looked like:

From my added frame outlines, cinemascreen (in cyan) would've looked awesome. Unfortunately, it seems widescreen (in magenta) contains the entire shot, well-framed for that format.

.

As jerryshadoe mentioned above, there are "HDTV" and "Cinemascope" vids at YouTube. And, yes, they are just poor quality, crop-and-stretch vids (karma will get back to YouTube poster "Gunga Din" & "gunga din" for that bit of trickery).  ;)

.

However, there is a "making of" video there, too. These are interesting because they show original movie clips (interspersed among the interviews) in the movies' released format:

The Making of Slipstream (1989) (by the director of Tron)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67WdIRsBks8

.

Grabbing the same-frame shots from the fullscreen movie ..

Slipstream (1989)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9A4V9XZweI

.. and from that widescreen portion of the "making of" documentary, and superimposing them, shows further evidence of Slipstream being a widescreen (only) production:

.

Also came across a medley of Elmer Bernstein music from the film (must be from a soundtracks compilation):

Elmer Bernstein - music from Slipstream (1989)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i44tuxPh_0E

and a few minutes video capture from the JP laserdisc:

YouTube coming through big time! Hope this helps.

It would be nice if someone could get one of the film prints and start a preservation project on this one.

An album of the score — the original master Elmer Bernstein had prepared before the failure of the film killed the prospect of a soundtrack album — was released by Perseverance Records in March of 2011, but was quickly withdrawn when it was revealed that not everything had been properly signed off on by all of the relevant parties.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

Thanks!

Maybe satanika's access to the JP laserdisc could get things started -- probably the JP widescreen laserdisc overlaid by the US fullscreen laserdisc in the hard-coded subtitles area (with color-matching, of course).

Or ... Pineapples101 has a blog and indicates access to the JP laserdisc. Might be worth a contact, too.

I really like Space Kaijuu's suggestion of film ...

eBay - SLIPSTREAM: 35mm CINEMA MOVIE FILM TRAILER:1989: Mark Hamill, Bill Paxton

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SLIPSTREAM-35mm-CINEMA-MOVIE-FILM-TRAILER-1989-Mark-Hamill-Bill-Paxton-/221532044285

Granted, it's only a trailer ... but it could be a good color-correction source. If you get it, definitely post caps!

BTW, thanks for that interesting info. A quick look on eBay shows some high prices for it from sellers worldwide. At least the pictures are free.  :)

IF THIS SHOULDN'T BE POSTED, I apologize and will delete links...

On topic on that soundtrack, I collect soundtracks and have many rare ones in my collection. A lot of the soundtracks are for movies that I have never seen but I like the music. Anyway, I have a copy of this album, both in FLAC and mp3, and am happy to share it for anyone interested. I'm assuming that since this is a rare, OOP album, it's ok to post these links ;o)

FLAC edition: https://mega.co.nz/#!QEpyVQCB!7fjNMHikr9ElFzJF9ZhkHxyYOH26Lj4T5BxDw2VMN6Y

320kbps CBR MP3 edition: https://mega.co.nz/#!cRAElBSL!8Xw6toYJ2KN8ujk9te-wDoSAOWT0aeYeFKBt4E1kDAE

Enjoy ;o)

EDIT: I just realized that what I posted is NOT the same as the cover shown in the post above mine, as it has 13 (not 11) tracks. Some of them differ a little bit in name but the overall runtime appears to be the same. When I found this originally (on a site that is now dead) the description stated that it was the rare pressed CD edition. I remember this because I threw it in my "RARE collections" music folder on my backup drive and every one of those finds stands out in my mind because its always a "warm-fuzzy-feeling" when you find unique stuff. Anyway, now I'm rambling, so I'll let you wonderful people decide whether this is a valid copy that I posted;o)

They probably separated “Prologue” from “Pursuit” (unnecessary) and “Revenge” from “Resolution” (which is nice because “Resolution” makes a great stand-alone track to add to playlists).

This score is one of Bernstein's most epic. When you're talking about the composer of The Ten Commandments, that's really saying something.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

Thanks, but I see it's called JDownloader because of ... Java. I don't allow Java (security concerns).
Besides, my problem was getting onto the site without being stuck on their update-your-browser page. Talk about nerve!  :O

How about "sendspace"? I see that being used here without problem ...

I guess I can try that, MEGA is just easy for me as it syncs on my desktop.

Anyway, which copy, the FLAC or mp3s?

The trailer came do I have to handle it in any special way?

Whoa! That is in excellent condition! (Definitely use clean cotton gloves when handling it.)

I did a quick straighten, lighten, and contrast & saturation increase (but no color correction). It looks gorgeous (and widescreen)!
