Yeah, it seems like the uloz.to thing may just be some glitch. I had others report that it wasn't working for them one day and then the next it was.

I'm assuming I can just make my own DVD5 from the AVCHD or MKV. I have DVDfab so that might do. I don't do much with DVD anymore. I mean... DVD? Really? But so many people I know have no desire to go up. They are all streaming pukey Netflix.

Yes, however if making a DVD yourself, the mkv is the better source due to the higher bitrate than AVCHD.

If Bluray equipment is available, eschew the DVD for a proper Bluray created from the mkv using either ClownBD or TsMuxer.  You can select which soundtracks to include out of the large number available and which to make the default selection, to make playback easier, since there won't be menus.

If you really want menus and to include say the documentary or any other video on the same disc, you can use MultiAVCHD, but it has a relatively steep learning curve.

To be frank though, you can very likely find a good bluray player at a nearby store for 50 bucks, and DVD movies are becoming harder and harder to find.

Not upgrading to Bluray by now seems a bit silly considering the low price point for basic, non-smart models; plus the fact that if one were to ask for a movie for birthday or Christmas, they would very likely receive it on Bluray (as happened to me a couple of years ago, prompting my eBay purchase of a PS3 slim).

Hey guys,

Hate to bother everyone, but I just got the Despecialized edition (Which has completely floored me with it's quality, by the way) through Jdownloader and the .mkv file keeps crashing around the 15:45 mark. I tried seeing if skipping past would but the file would crash at any point beyond 15:45. I haven't used Jdownloader before, so i'm not sure how to proceed. I'm using VLC player to watch the movie and running MacOS. If anyone could help out, that'd be totally awesome!

Thanks!

Like many others, I registered just to say thank you to Harmy and the rest of the Original Trilogy users contributing to this effort. Just finished watching ESB v2.0 and I will join the chorus declaring it amazing! As someone who grew up on the original cuts of these films, it is truly heartwarming to see them properly restored to their original state. Thank you for that!

I did have a question thought - still trying to get my hands on Star Wars v2.5. 1.0 looks great, but would love to see the latest version. Is there a torrent available somewhere?

This happens when not all the parts have been downloaded correctly. If you still have the .part files, check to see if all but the last one are the same size. If you find that, redownload that part and put them back together again.

If you deleted the .part files, I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry, but you're going to have to redownload them all again. Just check to see if their sizes match.

You'll get no arguments from me, but we can't force people to upgrade. I know plenty of people with lovely 1080p flat screens who don't have an HD cable box. They refuse to spend more money to upgrade to the newer one and just keep the box they have had for years and years and years.

Most people just don't care.

I don't have a blu ray player. I watch almost everything as a stream or download and don't want to clutter up my house with any more plastic disc cases. The difference in video quality between Blu ray and iTunes movies isn't important enough to me to be worth the clutter, and the flexibility and kid-friendliness of iCloud is a major plus over physical media.

That said, it's remarkable how difficult it can be for most people to watch a video file on their TVs. People learned how to deal with mp3 files but a comparable revolution never happened with video. There's just too much of a barrier involving needing special boxes, correctly-encoded files, etc. Burning a disc that you can just insert and play really is the best way for almost everyone to watch these.

Hi Harmy,

I just got around to watching your 01 Introducing the DeEd WP2_1 and I was curious which version of the VHS and laser discs you used when you show this screenshot?

I don't recognize it.  I have several American VHS versions from the 80s and 90s and would be happy to send you pictures of the covers and cassettes if you want to use those instead (or in addition)

No, thanks, it's really easy to find pictures of SW VHS relases on the internet - I just wanted to use this specific case, because it is the British 1995 VHS release (which is the source of the actual video, albeit, this cover is for the full-screen version).

Hi!

First time poster here, I just joined. Harmy, your work on these Despecialized Editions is mind-blowing. Congratulations--and many thanks.

Here's a couple of technical questions. I have a Mac OSX  Version 10.9.4.

I just downloaded STAR WARS version 2.5 and EMPIRE.

I used HandBrake to convert both to mv4 files, with all of the various English audio tracks.

I was able to load TESB into iTunes with no problem, and watched it on AppleTV. It worked great.

But for some reason, STAR WARS 2.5 will not load into iTunes. Is anyone else having this problem? If so, how did you solve it?

Also--when I try to play EMPIRE in 5.1 sound, I only get standard stereo through the two front speakers and the subwoofer. Would anyone happen to know why?

I appreciate the help!

Many thanks.

Does mp4 support anything else than aac audio?

Author

if you use the Apple TV preset, it should do a pass through track of the 5.1 sound automatically.

I wonder how many people (I'm one) are converting the video for play on Apple TV, XBOX, PlayStation, etc. would it be worth (in another thread) working out a good compromise for settings and creating one h264 video for these players and uploading it somewhere? The risk I guess is diluting the official release with too many different versions.

I actually mentioned before, that I was thinking about doing a smaller mp4 version for those looking for a more compact download, so I might as well do it in a way that it'd be compatible with Apple devices (because, unlike the other way round it will still be compatible with most other devices).

Author
Time

Oh, so does that mean the STAR WARS version 2.5 MKV is not compatible with iTunes and AppleTV?

The version of EMPIRE that I downloaded is definitely compatible. I figured STAR WARS would be the same.

Thanks!

Author

Well, if you had to use handbrake to recode it, it wasn't compatible.

It would definitely be better for us to do such conversions than let people try it on their own, because it's pretty much guaranteed that the format is going to get screwed up in some way if they do.  See the above post about the sound not playing correctly.

Editing to add: we should also be promoting the DVD conversions as a viable option, since it is by far the most compatible way of watching them at this point.

But I used HandBrake to convert THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK into an m4v file, and there was no problem loading it into iTunes and then playing it through AppleTV.

I wouldn't be able to load an MKV file into iTunes for play on AppleTV, so no matter what, I have to do the conversion.

My main question is, how come it's not working when I do it with STAR WARS V2.5?

That's all I'm trying to find out.  :-)

Does the MKV work in your computer?

Yep, I can run it in VLC.
