**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!! — Page 6

They've already released the SE's on blu-ray, so all we need are the unaltered theatrical movies.  Fans who prefer the SE can just hang on to their 2011 discs and continue to enjoy the inferior versions.

A Bladerunner type set would just make it more expensive for those of us who have been waiting for years for a release of the OT.

That's true. It would be nice if we didn't have to buy any kind of box set - just individual titles would be good too.

Because pricey box sets never ever go on sale these days, or get broken up and sold on Ebay.

Seriously, after waiting all this time, if we finally get what we've been waiting for, we're going to complain it's too expensive to buy?

Most likely we'll get the exclusive box set that everyone wants but can't afford which will have the BluRays only. Then individual BluRay/DVD combos then individual DVD releases with little to no features. The latter I'll probably go with unfortuantely because A) it'll be cheaper and B) I don't own a BluRay player. Is it me or do BluRay/DVD combos sound pointless?? If we own BluRay players why would we want the DVDs???

Who's complaining?  I just said there's no need to include the SE's, since they have already been released.  It's not like anything has been announced anyway.

I don't care if it includes a version with Jar Jar replacing Han Solo - as long as it includes the OUT, I will pay whatever price they ask.

My bad. Disney unfortunately knows we'll pony up, even if it's encased in a life sized bust of George sticking his tongue out. ;)

Disney markets to families who like to give the DVD to the kids, or have an extra copy to watch in the car on long trips. It's a "value added" gimmick that has probably gotten many people into Blu Ray, since they got a couple discs before they even considered buying a player. And players are more affordable these days.

I think it's fine for fan edits, such as Adywan's edits, but officially modernize them decade after decade?  In the 1997, the films were "updated" to modern standards to some extent, but now some of the CGI and added effects are dated.  Why do films of 1970s and 1980s need to be updated to modern standards?  Can't they simply exist as products of their time?

The 1997 and 2004 SE's were quite poorly done, effects only added in a few random shots.

They should release the originals, but they should also do a more thorough job with the special editions, IMO.

Perhaps someday we'll get the originals packaged with an updated SE. This would be my advice to Disney/Lucasfilm, etc. if they were to give us another special edition. Have fans write in saying what they want added or remove and this way we'll get a nice SE that's more appealing to everyone else.

I'd say it depends on how they choose to release and market them. If the Original Trilogy is marketed as an alternative cut along side the SE in a premium box set, then the odds that there will even be a DVD release of the OT are pretty slim. A lot of premium extra content including alternative cuts of films are Blu-Ray exclusive these days, so I could imagine there not even being a DVD release of the OT at all, just the SE. If you look at Disney's current releases now, assuming they would be the ones distributing this release or even Fox, most often they will include all of the substantial extras on the Blu-Ray only, with a few measly features tacked onto the DVD. Even with Fox titles and alternate cuts (which the OT might be marketed as alongside the SE) the DVD usually only includes whatever the main version of the film is considered to be on a single disc with little extras.

Now assuming this could be a different scenario where the SE gets phased out completely or at least aren't focused on or included in this release, than yes, there would be a better chance they will be released on DVD if they are considered the main presentation, but it still definitely wouldn't be a guarantee that the OT would be released on DVD at all. Afterall, There still is no stand alone DVD of the 2011 cuts of the SE on DVD.

Honestly in my opinion, The whole Blade Runner scenario with all of those multiple releases at once on multiple formats wouldn't happen today the way it did in '07 as far as a concurrent release of the same content on DVD goes. The market has totally changed and studios no longer care about DVD. Blade Runner came out at a time when Blu-Ray's potential was just really starting to take off, but DVD was still a big player in the game and was what a lot of people were still buying at that time. Now, DVDs are mostly an afterthought with little to no effort put into them, so I would be hesitant to assume that there would even be an OT DVD release at all if this whole thing does actually happen.

Also, I'm don't exactly know what your reason is for not owning a Blu-Ray player, lots of people still don't and I have nothing against people who chose not to embrace the format for whatever reason and there is nothing wrong with that, but honestly you can get one now for about what you would probably pay for a theoretical OT box set when it's released, or probably even for less if you really want to enjoy all of the bonus content and what not that will most likely be exclusive to Blu.

Oh the irony. This is exactly a mirror behaviour of "They already released theatrical versions on DVD", well in a sense even more ignorant. Let me remind you that it just a rumour and you are not on the safe side yet to take the old TFN-like attitude.

But obtaining fan edits is illegal and requires lots of technical knowledge.

Neither of these things are true.

Then why haven't I ever been able to obtain any?

No, I meant more whining.  Actually, I never heard of anyone caring about the 97 SE until I came here, and you and your 97 friends are hardly worth mentioning.

You can put a blu-ray into a DVD player.  It won't play.

If you had said "because DVDs play on my computer and my Xbox," I wouldn't have said a thing.

Let me give you a more useful answer, in order to abide by 'Wook's request.  Go to FE.org and read up on how to get a fanedit.  It doesn't take a lot of technical knowledge, just a willingness to learn.  I was able to figure it out, and I'm 87 years old.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Assuming Disney actually puts a lot of time and effort into an OUT restoration, I doubt they'll only include it in some 200 dollar set, because VERY few people would buy that, and anyone who wants the originals but isn't really heartbroken about settling for the SE's won't buy it either. The only versions they'll release will be the current versions alongside the unaltered versions if this happens. Also, they're never going to remaster the 1997 editions. I'm not saying that maliciously, I'm just saying it's probably naive to think that the 97 version will ever see a release again. If it is released it'll be in a Blade Runner type set (same with '04), but again, if they do release a comprehensive set of all versions, they'll make the original version available in another release, because that's the only "alternate" version that there's a market for.

 Boooooooooo! Your Blu-Rays don't have commentaries :-P

(Also a 3-hour doc about how they painstakingly restored the OT frame-by-frame wouldn't go amis *Hint* Disney LOL)

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.
