I personally don't like ANH:R much either, because for my taste it takes too many liberties and I outright dislike some of the specific changes but I don't see it as a problem - the man made that edit to adhere to his personal taste and it's entirely up to you, whether you want to watch Star Wars this way or not. I love having alternate versions of movies and I don't see any problem with modernizing an old film, as long as you have a choice between watching the modernized version or the original.

I am actually very much looking forward to ESB Revisited, because it seems that this time, Ady is really sticking to the original cut and only updating the effects and the look of the film and it will be a great alternate version of that classic movie - and the word alternate is key here - it won't become the only version of the movie for me, only an interesting alternative and that's awesome. I believe, that if the Special Editions were always just an alternative version, with the original getting the same treatment, I would actually enjoy it as an interesting alternative too - I would still consider it an inferior version but at the same time a cool alternative - you never hear anyone complain about James Cameron making extended versions of Aliens or T2, because the originals are available in the same quality.

As another example, I prefer the original version of Blade Runner (I like the original effects, I like the noir narration, I even like the happy ending) but I would never dream of complaining about Ridley Scott having made the Final Cut, because why would I?
