When I was 2, I saw the OT on VHS (Faces). Of course I don't remember that first time, but I watched it pretty constantly thereafter. So I basically can't remember a time when I hadn't seen the OT.
Saw all three prequels in the theaters twice each.
Saw the SE a year or two after I saw TPM. I did not like it and did not understand the reason for its existence.

I really want to see the OT in theaters. I think that would be an amazing experience.
Star Wars - in the late 80's at my friend's house. He knew I love robots and sci-fi and that kind of stuff, so he invited me to watch " a good robot movie ". It was a high generation pirate VHS, 4:3 P&S, dubbed in an unknown language "overlayed" with a voiceover in another unknown language (I think it was a german dub with a polish voiceover but I'm not sure about that anymore). I didn't understand a word, but I couldn't get my eyes of the TV screen, I immediately fell in love with the characters and the straight forward action packed story.
Empire & Jedi - in the early 90's we got satellite and I've seen these movies on one of the German channels, not sure which one it was. So for many many years the droids have been for me "Tze Drei Pe Oh" and "Er zwo de zwo":)
During the 90's the movies were shown many times on different czech, slovak & german channels, and I FINALLY saw the movies on the big screen for the very first time ever in 1997. Unfortunately they were the SE, but I didn't care then.
I was 5 or 6 years old and my Uncle and Mom had the old VHS tapes and I fell in love with the series. My mom gave me some of her old Sandtrooper and Stormtrooper toys, and I bought every toy from Luke Skywalker in his Orange rebel squadron outfit to the TIE fighter pilots.
No need to mention the prequels.

I first saw Star Wars A New Hope when I was 5 on DVD, my dad is a Star Wars fan too and he introduced me to the films.

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

It would appear i am one of the few here who saw the movies when first released in the theaters. im feeling a bit old! ;)

I first saw the original Star Wars film on TV, when I was like 5 I think (I do remember the trench run scene very vividly from that 1st viewing) so that must have been in like '93 or '94 and then I haven't seen any Star Wars until I saw ESB and ROTJ SE on VHS in '97 or '98.
I saw the prequels in the cinema (actually for ROTS, I first saw the time-coded bootleg at a friend's house and then I went to see it at a midnight show during my trip to England that summer and I fell asleep).

And which version was it? The 2004 SE or the 2006 OUT DVD?

I honestly don't remember the 1st time I ever watched it. It always just seemed to exist in my life. I was only one when ROTJ came out in theaters so I definitely missed the initial run and I grew up watching it on TV in pan and scan.
For all the flack the 97 edition gets now, it was really eye opening seeing it for the 1st time in widescreen in a large theater. So much detail you never noticed before.

It kinda puts paid to notions that people just want the OT restored out of a sense nostalgia. Because for many of us nostalgia is a cr*ppy quality pan & scanned 4:3 VHS that we taped off the tellie. We actually want the OUT restored in HD because it looks better that way. The Harmy's DE and the 2006 GOUT were the first times I'd ever seen the OUT in Widescreen.

That's not really surprising - the theater in which I saw Episode I doesn't exist anymore and the theater in which I saw Episode II as well as the LOTR trilogy doesn't exist any more either.

are movie theatres becoming more disposable as technologies advance? before, things use to last for half a century. now, in just 15 years, they can be torn down.
Oh, well, the buildings of those theaters I was talking about are still there, they are just not movie theaters any more - they were put out of business by multiplexes.

The theater where I saw ROTJ is still there, but it's a landmark, and more of a concert venue these days.
The theater I saw SW SE and TPM closed for several years, before being remodeled and reopening again.
I'm happy the 1984 multiplex in the next town over is largely unchanged, even though they have at least two digital projectors now.
I get a little sad when I see the buildings that used to be movie theaters in my area, and more so when I see the still empty lot where the my childhood favorite stood until three years ago.
I don't think it's just movie theaters. There's just no appreciation for preserving "modern" structures in general. People will rally to save a 1950's style McDonald's, but would anyone care when the last 70's style one gets knocked down or remodeled into the current look?

My dad took me to see Star Wars at our local cinema when it first came out. I was four. I remember being terrified at Vader's entrance. When we got home he painted me a picture of Luke standing by the Falcon. I can still remember it now. Got an R2 figure soon after.
Empire: we went to see Empire as a family on holiday in Blackpool in 1980. My brother would have been two. I had a red plastic Star Wars hat and, on the same holiday, was not allowed to buy the 12" Luke figure. I was devastated. I did however get the Luke Bespin figure which slightly made up for it.
Jedi: my dad brought home a pirate video and surprised me by putting it on. I can still remember seeing the Lucasfilm logo and wondering what on earth was occurring! Then the crawl... the new Star Wars film at home!! Unbelievable! A week or so later my mam took me and my friend, Zac, to see it at the cinema.
