I viewed it mentally to be similar to what happens to Veridian 3(?) towards the end of Star Trek: Generations.

A massive wave of energy just slams into Naboo, causing it to break apart. Fast enough that no one can get off the planet, but slow enough that the molten core cools as it is exposed to the vacuum of space, essentially creating a massive field of debris.
No massive explosions. An almost peaceful destruction.
