I always assumed the reason the really bad laserdisc ports were released was because everyone at LFL and Fox wanted them released and George finally said, "alright, as long as it doesn't cost one penny" so they did it the cheapest way humanly possible.
Because a restoration could not be performed, those 1993 Video Masters provided the best source to create DVD Transfers for the Original Theatrical Unaltered Versions.
With Disney apparently restoring the Theatrical Cuts in 4K and releasing them in 1080p on Blu-Ray next year, they'd probably look significantly better than the 2011 Blu-Rays of the Special Edition.
As moviefreakedmind said before, the Star Wars Trilogy (and maybe Ep. I, II and III are out of luck) will absolutely get a 4k restoration. These are some of the best selling movies of all time, so they will definitely get restored up to modern standards, whether SE or OUT. The way I see it, since the SE stuff was done in 2k and can't be rescanned at 4k, it makes sense in my mind to restore the OUT and then just include both the first blu ray and the new unaltered versions in the same set if they feel like they have to include both versions. Restoring the original negative as is would be the 97 edition if they don't also restore and scan the cut parts, which I'm sure they will because the 97 SE will never be released again. Even if they are going to 4k restore the altered version and redo all the future 2004/2011 changes then they'd still probably restore the extra things removed for the SE, that way they could release both. Idk, I don't want to jump to conclusions, but it seems like something we can be somewhat hopeful about...
