You guys aren't selling it very well.

It's the closest I've been to the sheer fun and joy I had one summer night in 1977 in a long time.

Silent Running (1971) - Really cool effects and a nice message don't quite make up for weak characters and plot. Bruce Dern is amazing though. B-

King Solomon's Mines (1950) - Rather slow for a high stakes adventure. And a little anti-climactic too. Still, a high quality production. B

The Shop Around the Corner (1940) - This was a bit of a surprise. I had only read about it in the context of You've Got Mail (which I have not seen). A very wonderful film. This is my third Lubitsch film, I really should watch more. B+

Silent Running was one inspiration for MST3K.

And the drones were a design influence on a certain feisty little astromech droid.

Moscow on the Hudson (1984)

"When I was in Russia, I did not love my life...but I loved my misery. You know why? Because it was my misery. I could hold it. I could caress it. I loved my misery."

Great film.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Or as people like to call it now, "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark"

Only in George's mind. I doubt even Spielberg calls it that. ;)

Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Councilor (2013)

This film is why Tyler Perry shouldn't make movies. Terrible acting (Kim Kardashian can't even play herself); terrible one-name (one-name characters and the title? Sounds like Cinemax porn to me), one-dimension, stupidly-motivated, incredibly braindead characters (especially the lead); a predictable and obvious plot twist with a shoehorned reveal in a character's monologue; a tedious, drawn-out, sluggish plot; all stuffed to the gills with incredibly ham-fisted religious parables and metaphors in a wannabe-intelligent and clever, "hey do you get it yet?" fashion. If you decide to watch this, watch the first ten minutes or so and then skip to the last fifteen minutes or so.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

If you haven't seen it, see it now. It's incredible.

I listed to the Flophouse Podcast on it the other day. Hard to believe this movie exists.

Hahaha, I love how they open it with the exact same Cinemax correlation.

Seriously, though, that podcast is exactly how the movie was. All the dialogue they riffed on was so much worse than what they said. The movie could EASILY have been half an hour long.

So awful.

So! As I said before, the girlfriend and I have been watching the James Bond films since she hasn't seen them before. Finally slogged through Roger Moore. I've never really realized how tiring it was to sit through all of that; yeesh. I can't believe he was James Bond from the early seventies to the mid-eighties. I would probably go insane if I was locked into a role that long.

Quick recap of my thoughts on the films up to now: Connery was golden until he got tired near the end. I enjoy Never Say Never Again, but it's no Thunderball. The actors are great, though.

Moore's reign went on way too long. Early stuff was good, but he's just so old by the end; however, the later films are definitely more complex and interesting, Octopussy has some great characters, as does A View To A Kill.

I'm excited to see what she thinks of Dalton.

Besides that, we've been on a court movie kick lately, except for:

Captain America: The Winter Solider (2014)

Finally got around to watching this. Loved it. My girlfriend and I were just discussing upon leaving Guardians of the Galaxy that it's great how different the MCU films are. Going from Iron Man to Guardians to Winter Soldier will give you a totally different experience from Hulk to Thor to Avengers, and I love that.

As for Winter Soldier, it was great. Definitely more of an intrigue spy thriller than all-out action. Cap really grew, Winter Soldier was great and appropriately handled, and Maria Hill and Nick Fury were also fantastic and grew a lot. What annoyed me was Black Widow, who I felt was castrated and lost a lot of character. They always have to develop female characters into vulnerable piles of goop and it's just meh. Other than that, she had good moments and I loved the film.

Four out of five Troublemun.

Runaway Jury (2003)

I've seen this before. It's a great movie, I think. I love the tension at the end and the twist. I like that it creeps up on you and you're allowed to realize it as the characters do and it's not obvious halfway in. It's got a great cast, too, but I would like it a lot more without the wanky anti-gun message it drools all over itself.

6.5 out of 12 jurors.

A Few Good Men (1992)

For me, at least, this is one of those movies that you know about, but have never seen.

It was great, though. I love courtroom movies that are quick and snappy like that, and there were lots of moments where I couldn't help but shout "OOO BURN" when Tom Cruise nailed a particularly revealing line of questioning. Lots of then big-names and now big-names as well. Definitely deserving of its place as a classic.

4.5 out of 5 unhandled truths.

Expendables 3 (2014)

Disposable.

The Survivors (1983)

Candice Paluso: Listen, this is gonna sound like a really stupid question, but, uh, aren't you guys gonna get really bored out here if society doesn't collapse?

Donald Quinelle: I wouldn't worry about that. Wes says society is heading for the big "flush". And we're going to be the ones who are clinging to the rim while everything else goes down.

Candice Paluso: Eeew!

Sonny Paluso: What're you going to do if things get better?

Donald Quinelle: Is the air getting better?

Candice Paluso: That's true.

Donald Quinelle: The economy? The Middle East? Arts, literature, television, US Presidents improving?

Sonny Paluso: Anyone can nitpick.

Donald Quinelle: Sonny, name one thing that's gotten better in the last ten years.

Sonny Paluso: [Sonny is stumped]

Donald Quinelle: See?

Candice Paluso: Video games.

Sonny Paluso: Video games! There you are.

Donald Quinelle: Alright, I acknowledge that.

Well that was certainly something. A film that's surprisingly still relevant.

       GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

I enjoyed it quite a bit. Well done all around.

The MCU is actually turning me into a fan of the genre. I thought I left my comic book days behind long ago.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Definitely the most fun I had at a theater in a while. It's also generally a gorgeous piece of filmmaking; definitely see this in 3D. The villains were a little weak, but they were serviceable, I suppose. 4 out of 5 Troll dolls.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Baaaaad. An incomprehensible mess with a romance that doesn't even make the least amount of sense, villains that have laughably simplistic motivations, CGI that manages to look worse than it did in the first film and poorly shot and edited action scenes. And oh, ofcourse, a lot of Sony products. I feel like Sony and its subsidiaries treat their films solely as products and marketing tools, more so than any other film studio. 1.5 out of 5 pointless plotlines.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

As a non-Trekkie (I've only seen the Abrams films and First Contact), I thought this was a pretty damn bad introduction to the franchise. It's a pretty decent introduction to 2001: A Space Odyssey though, since it does deal with some of the same themes and it's about as slow...I guess it has that going for it? 2 out of 5 slowly moving Enterprise shots.

Last movie I was actually able to watch:  Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last movie I went to see : Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Sadly, I couldn't look at the screen for very long because of all the damn steady cam effects that went on throughout the whole movie.

Man, I have to see Guardians of the Galaxy some time. I haven't heard a single negative review of it. I'll have to either watch it in French or wait until I return from Québec, though.

Maybe he's adverse to steady fluid camera movements that allow you to see what happens without motion blur.

Some time ago I watched Mel Gibson's Apocalypto. I can say it is one of my favourite films of the last 15 years.

I'm a big Gilliam fan and have all his films except one, which I'd also never seen before 'The Fisher King', I know right it's supposed to be his best one, how come I never watched it. I don't know either!? LOL

Obviously it was Robin Williams sad passing that gave me the reason to finally catch up with it. Wow what a masterpiece. It's so up my street. It walks that tightrope between heartbreaking tragedy and heartwarming magical romance in the same way as Chaplin's 'City Lights', Benigni's 'La Vita Bella' or Allen's 'The Purple Rose of Cairo'.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

It's a shame it's probably mostly film buffs that watch the Marx Brothers these days, as kids love those movies if they get the chance to see them.
