Team Negative1 - Return of the Jedi 1983 - 35mm Theatrical Version (unfinished project) — Page 7

Here is a very early preview of a brief comparison of 2 of the prints.

The older bluer tinted one is on the bottom.

The top one seems to have less weave in it.

Not sure about the differences in damage, although both

have a lot at the heads and tails.

NOTE : No color correction has been done, these are basically raw scans. So they will appear dark.

REMOVED TEMPORARILY

Heh, I kinda like the blue tint even if it's not supposed to be there :P

Can't wait to see a color corrected version of the top one though, atm it's too hard to make a lot of things out :(

Well despite your best effort, my hopes are up. :P

Do you think, then, that it surpass the others films in completion status? Or perhaps it already has, for Empire.

Easily, yes. There is a small push to get this out after Star Wars, or even before it, if possible.

There will be a screening of this movie, just like the other two. So we will know later this year, how feasible it will be.

Comments are the only way for us to know about interest, otherwise, what is the point of posting pictures and videos, without feedback.

Lots of people want to see what is being worked on, and the quality of it, since we don't have a real official version out.

There are many comments about all kinds of minute details for other projects, this restoration needs other people to look it at, besides ourselves. Or we will be the only ones that end up enjoying it.

So feel free to post relevant questions, and comments about images, quality and other topics.

Team Negative1

Oh, I'm interested, and lots of people are interested in what this completed project can mean for us all, never doubt that.  In the mean time, what are the chances you can get any of the key special edition changed scenes to Harmy for his project?

We will work something out with Harmy once we get more details about our prints, and also when he figures out what sections.

Most likely:

--------------

- Lapti Nek dance scene
- Sarlacc pit
- Ending sequence

And the original Rancor-compositing with those lovely matte-lines i hope! ;)

And Anakin's eyebrows, I've heard a lot of complaints about the quality we currently have for those.

Also have to wonder if the space battles would be good to have 35mm scans on hand, as there seem to have been many compositing changes throughout.

There's a lot more scenes that could be used. It's just a matter of getting to the priority ones first, and then doing the rest later on.

The eyebrows definitely have priority over everything except the dance number!

The Sarlacc pit is already pretty good in v1.0 except for a few shots, as is the ending celebration - they definitely could use the improvement but the dance number and the eyebrows need it more!

And perhaps the missing footage that now cuts to Boba Fett doing his thang in The SE.  (?)

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Yes, also very important - I sort of counted that as part of the dance number footage, when I asked TN1 for clips from Jedi.

Author

Ok, it's good to know which other parts are important. We have sent you an email Harmy, and will let you know once we're ready.

You will be contacted by the Team.

Thanks

I was discussing the film with a friend a few months ago, and he mentioned that he was certain that the subtitles for the scene between Jabba and Boushh had been altered at some point since the original 1983 release (which he saw in the cinema) as those on every home video release he'd seen since then didn't match his recollections.

In a nutshell, he recalls one of the subtitles containing a four-letter word.  This struck me as unlikely for this particular film, but I'm not in a position to confirm or deny it myself - do the subs in the prints you have provide any evidence for this?

 No.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

Seeing how there is a lot of interest in some of the altered scenes. We will try to post a few shots. It looks like the Darth Vader unmasking scene with the eyebrows is a popular one.

Also we have contacted Harmy about sharing some scenes. Hopefully we will have something suitable for him to use.

We are still evaluating our second scan currently

Would you be willing to share the unaltered scenes of Lapti Nek and Yub Nub with me as well?

I would much prefer to have 35mm sources for these two scenes to work with in order to reinsert them into the Return of the Jedi V2 Semi-Specialised Edition i'm planning to release soon. I've been able to get fairly satisfactory results from upscaling the GOUT and manipulating the image dynamics a bit but I'm certain the 35mm sources you have available of those two scenes look much better and more filmic.

Send us a PM, and we'll consider it. We don't have a time frame, and Harmy will probably come out with his version first.
