Since this movie has warmed the hearts of many an old jaded SW fan, I thought it deserved it's own thread.

I was curious about the Walkman that is Quill's prized possession. The ebay prices for a similar model before and after the movie came out are an eye opener!

Sony should make a modern replica with a MP3 player hidden inside. ;)

Daaamn. That thing is selling!

As this movie seems to be on a lovely nostalgia tip... I had this:

Sony Walkman WM-EX36

Many an "awesome mix tape" was enjoyed. Although given I got it in 1991, I also probably sent a lot of time listening to Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album ;-)

Look kids ^ it had "Auto Reverse"! That meant you didn't have to spend several minutes rewinding your tapes if you wanted to listen to the album again.

Welcome to the future.

Funny thing is, I used to see old Walkmans littering thrift stores well into the 90's. This was well before the net, ebay, and retro electronics being in vogue though.

Quill's model was a bit old, even in 1988. Makes sense a kid would have a hand me down. I knew someone in high school who had the really tiny one no bigger than a cassette box, and that was an expensive model.

I lament my busted old Walkman is a Sanyo.

This is the first movie I've seen in a long time where the source music is so integral to the story. It's not just there to push a soundtrack album. I'm sure Disney would have loved to sneak something in by some fresh faced teenybopper band of the moment, but that would have broken the spell.

I could nitpick how a cassette tape could survive twenty years of a rough and tumble life in space, but if Quill could find someone to build the tape deck in his spaceship, anything is possible. :)

I know right, I thought there'd be at least one godawful "My Chemical Romance covering Dylan" moment ;-) Good on you Disney/Marvel!

That hadn't escaped my notice either. Maybe he stole it off another "terran" he met on his travels?

I'm sure space is littered with plundered Terran technology. I'd bet Quill went on the hunt to find a new tape player at some point. He does have a talent for tracking down ancient artifacts after all. He probably found it from some dealer or in a random marketplace. =P

Maybe, but it has a clunky generic look of something reverse engineered. The group of redneck (blueneck?) hillbilly bounty hunters Quill grew up with seem to have pretty good technology.

I dug the gizmo Quill used that showed the ruins as they looked in the past, complete with inhabitants.

The scene where that whistle controlled spike thingy takes out a bunch of goons was pretty badass. Another thing I like about the movie is even the supporting characters got their little moments to shine.

Speaking of other terrans, the door is wide open for the Starjammers to show up, if the rights aren't tied up with the X-Men at Fox.

Not only did I really enjoy the film & got that 1977 feeling, what also made me very happy was knowing that this film came from the same studio that Ep7 is coming from,.....now I know that they understand what kind of film EVERYONE is waiting for.....I just hope I'm right

I posted this theory over on FE.org but maybe people here would dig it too...

Did anybody else get the impression that the film was trying to imply that Jeff Bridges was Star-Lord's father?

It all synchs up with the hints in the script/story and the dates of the film, plus Bridges would be the perfect age now to play his father in the GOTG sequel! (And he's got Marvel form)

Starman Trailer 1984

Please let this be true and not just my insane idea . By the way, I do not want to know who Starlord's father may or not really be, if it's in the comics. I want it to be a surprise so please use "spoiler" tags if you know.

Current evidence points toward the Inhumans being the next celestial group up.

Except it's not the same studio. They're both owned by the same parent company but Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios are two separate entities with two completely different company cultures.

Now I would say that Lucasfilm as headed by Kathleen Kennedy has a lot of potential. But they've yet to prove themselves and Marvel hitting a home run is no indicator as to what Lucasfilm is capable of.

In any case, the bar for Episode 7 has gone up several notches. And space opera is fun again!

Apparently, the "production bought the only 16 of this specific Sony Walkman that were listed on eBay over a 6 month period, and only 3 of the 16 actually worked." Source.

For the purposes of the film, they would really only need the cassette hubs to spin.

The broken ones probably only needed new belts, unless they were really badly taken care of. Sony built stuff to last back then.

I knew someone would try & burst my bubble :)

...but still that parent company seems to be showing Lucasfilm what direction it should be going

Just saw it for the second time.

Couldn't get the idea out of my head that this COULD have been Episode 7. Just with a quick reskinning.

Clean up the language, and a change to some of the violence, and the intensity of it, could probably get a PG rating.

A hundred years after ROTJ. Ronan the Accuser is the last of a resistance movement of Palpatine fanatics.

Thanos is a mysterious figure known only at "The Sith Lord." Nebula and Gamora are the same as in the movie.  Maybe they have lightsabers.

Cut the "Star-Lord is from Earth" plot point. Cut the Earth-based humor. Otherwise he's the same. Rocket is not QUITE a raccoon, but still the same.

Nova-Prime is now the head of the Republiuc. John C. Reily and Peter Sefernowitzcz are Jedi. The various people running around Nova-town can include some Star Wars aliens we reocgnize.

The Infinity Gem is now called "The Kiber Crystal" but is basically the same. Maybe Del Toro's monologue could change the background so it's "something, something, the Force"

BTW, I'm not suggesting this is an improvement.

The Star Wars vibe is definitely there. Ronan's look reminds me of the Reborn Sith from the Jedi Outcast game.

Have to say I'd be disappointed if Episode VII was basically GOTG. I'm hoping for something better than that.

I want the exact same script with name's changed and a John Williams score.

The Disco Star Wars song can replace "Hooked on a Feeling:

In my opinion, it doesn't really get much better than that (already saw GOTG twice, probably will go see it at least once more) but as TheBoost (perhaps unwittingly) demonstrated in this post, making this a Star Wars film would take half the fun out of it.

At it's heart, GOTG is space opera. And it's fun in the way Star Wars used to be. (Something the prequels were in short supply of.) I'm sure Episode VII will follow it's own path, but it will also have to bring back the fun. That is what will bring in audiences beyond us old geezers.

I'm already itching to see the movie again, and 2017 is sadly a long way off.

Above all else, FUN is the keyword. I havent had that much fun at a movie in a long time.

I hope Ep 7 is, at the least, fun.

I think its interesting that the character designs in the movie are all so much more distinctive and memorable than the GotG in the comics.

These characters could be in any comic ever. Skull belts... cleavage... weird color. I just posted the pics and I already forgot what they look like

Cast in lead? Some perv will lick that statue and take ill! ;)

I'd love an action figure based on Rocket's 1980's miniseries look.

I haven't read any of the later appearances, so I don't know if his origin story has been changed since then, or just tweaked for the movie. He certainly has more of an edge and attitude than I remember.
