Will you do a "Making Of" feature for ESB or will you wait until V2.5 is complete?

 No such feature is planned.

Well, regardless, it's hopefully all solved now :-)

I will wait before I render again though, in case more problems are discovered, because with all the effects applied, it takes over an hour to render the credits and I've already rendered them at least three times so far.

Unfortunately these fixes (typos in the credits - quote is from page 77) didn't make it into the released 2.0; it looks like you forgot to re-render them. Something for the 2.1 to-do list :)

And since I haven't said it yet, thank you very much, Harmy - 2.0 really is excellent and I truly appreciate all the work that you've put into it.

OMG, none of those typos was fixed? There were at least 10 >.<

EDIT: The necessary fixes are (in order):

NORMAN CHANGER => NORMAN CHANCER (02:01:56)

Dialoge Editors => Dialogue Editors  (02:02:39)

JOHN CAMPELL => JOHN CAMPBELL (02:03:04)

Asssistant Directors =>Assistant Directors (02:03:07)

Additional matte Photography => Additional Matte Photography (02:03:33)

Assistant Acountants => Assistant Accountants (02:03:47)

Electronics Engineers => Electronic Engineers (02:03:53)

Supervising Stage Technicians => Supervising Stage Technician (02:03:57)

Minature Pyrotechnics => Miniature Pyrotechnics (02:03:59)

comma after applicable laws (02:04:41)

Beyond that, SirJonah has done some minor adjustments (character spacing etc.).

EDIT 2: @ Beber

Thanks!

Is it really JOHN CAMBPELL ? Not Campbell ?

Don't worry, guys. Harmy has something special planned for v2.1/2.5 that will eliminate the need to error check the credits. So just sit tight, a superior version is coming!

It's great that you finally got it released Harmy! Thanks for your efforts and your seemingly never-ending enthusiasm! Really eager to check it out but a bit on the fence at the moment wheter I should give in to the fresh release or just sit tight like SirJonah suggests ;)

Ooh ho ho, I can't wait!

Would this "something special" have anything to do with 35mm film?

I just watched the new version with a couple of pals, and it's absolutely tremendous. The 35mm material is used to great effect, especially in Cloud City, and the colour work has precisely the right feel.

Special mention for hairy_hen's 5.1 track, which brings exactly the right sound to the phenomenal pictures.

By the way, I heartily recommend watching Black Angel before this - it makes for a fascinating pairing.

Here are some screenshot comparisons between v1.0 and v2.0 AVCHDs, showing the difference in the over-all picture quality:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/87208/picture:1

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/87208/picture:2

Since you can only compare two sources this way, I decided for the AVCHD, as it is a more fair comparison. Though the difference between the v2.0 AVCHD and MKV is actually super tiny - not that it's not there but you can only really see it in full-screen on a larger TV or monitor.

I've been gone all week, so hooray for unintentionally skipping the slightly problematic initial release.  I'm eagerly downloading it now.  Can't wait to see (and hear) the improvement!  Thanks for the gallery, Harmy.  This is going to be great!

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)

It's hard for me to keep up with everything that is going on with this project. At first I didn't realize what the purpose of a 2.0 version would be since to my eyes (which were clearly out of whack) the 1.0 was a perfect restoration.  But i must say the pictures you posted really put it into perspective!

I found out about this project when Star wars was up to 2.5 and the sequels were both 1.0.  I saw the documentary at the same time and assumed that that process described was basically the same for all three.

Are the sequels just now getting the blu-ray footage and that's the reason for the quality jump?

Also may i ask since 2.0 is out and looks wonderful, what is to be accomplished in a 2.5?

Sorry if this is all repetitious to people who have been following this closer than I, but I was curious.

I created an xdelta patch for going from the pre-fix version to the final fixed version (with correct audio labels, etc.). If you have the old version and don't want to redownload ~20GB or muck about with mkv editors, you can use this. Just extract it to the same folder as the mkv video file and run the .bat file. You need to make sure to have the same name as originally downloaded or to edit the .bat file if you've changed it. And be sure to have another ~20 GB available before starting as it will create a whole new file!

Dropbox link, hopefully will work here

I tested and verified, the fixed version should match the official md5 of 1e34878403b05924f71354e961016fce after completion.

Inferior product my ass. This is so much better than the BDs it's not even funny.

Incredible job, sir.

Thanks, Harmy. Looks even better than the workprint that was already great. A couple of things I noticed however, that I want to share with you and that you could maybe take into account for the next version:

I feel that pretty much this whole scene's colors still are too saturated (the time-codes are included in the URL):

http://www.heberger-image.fr/data/images/82961_The.Empire.Strikes.Back.Despecialized.Edition.Remastered.v2.0.mkv_snapshot_01.00.39_2014.08.10_15.23.08_.jpg

And the same in this scene :

http://www.heberger-image.fr/data/images/18809_The.Empire.Strikes.Back.Despecialized.Edition.Remastered.v2.0.mkv_snapshot_01.08.23_2014.08.10_15.26.50_.jpg

Also, I feel that we should see a little more of the edge of the window on top. This is so thin, like only one line of pixels, that it almost twinkles the way it is and attracts the eye. Can't you crop a little more at the bottom (C-3PO's feet) to reveal a little more on top?

http://www.heberger-image.fr/data/images/19572_The.Empire.Strikes.Back.Despecialized.Edition.Remastered.v2.0.mkv_snapshot_01.59.37_2014.08.10_15.28.01_.jpg

And final observation: the color match in the Falcon cockpit shots now definitely looks more consistant, yet we can still notice some minor inconsistancies, plus a lack of definition in the unzoomed shots... Too bad. Can't you obtain these few shots in 35 mm from Negative-1 for the next version?

This already is a great accomplishment anyway.

I don't post much around here but I've been following the project for quite some time (wish I could have donated but finances are not optimal for me these days), and I've finally finished downloading the MKV this morning.

First thing I did afterwards: showing it to my 4-year-old nephew. I wanted him to experience this movie only in its original, recreated version (as I also did with Star Wars with him) :D

So I wanted to thank you for all the brilliant work you've accomplished here Harmy, keep up the good work :D

Sorry, "sit tight" was probably the wrong idiom to use. Harmy is going to finish v2.0 of JEDI first before he gets to v2.1 of EMPIRE, so there's no reason to deprive yourself of what's available now. Just download whichever version you like (AVCHD or MKV) and enjoy!

What is the main video difference if any between AVCHD MKV (8GB) and the MKV that is 20GB? Thanks in advance!

Author

I was thinking about the unzoomed cockpit shots. Could you combine elements so that the vast majority of the frame was blu ray footage and only the edges were GOUT or, eventually, the 35mm scan? You've done similar in-image splicing before with the Mos Eisley flythrough. And in this case the viewer's eyes are naturally drawn toward the centre of the frame so they're not likely to notice the edges.

Bitrate higher in mkv as well as more audio and language tracks.

Impressive work, Harmy.  Most impressive.

Yes, I certainly could do that, which is why I have.

Really? So why is the definition quite less precise and the colors a tad different so that these shots stick out? Anyway Negative-1 has already agreed to provide you these shots in 35 mm for your next version.
