I've just assumed it was for 3D because they wanted a new scan for the movies being in cinemas since the old Lowry work wasn't going to cut it, and it started before the Disney deal, so it was a Lucas approved project, and it happened around the time of the whole 3D things. Again, we really don't know anything, this scan could be for a release of the unadulterated trilogy for all we know; this thread is just speculation
