and as for Yoda seemingly not noticing Ezra? You're talking about the dude who chatted it up with the Dark Lord himself yet couldn't sense him. Sorry, but Yoda IS fallible.

Yoda being falliable only works as an explanation as long as nobody ever tells Yoda about Ezra.

As someone who really didn't like the aesthetic of the CG Clone Wars series I actually like how this looks. Yeah, It skews more toward kids than I would have liked but it has some of that OT vibe.

In Disney's special edition, Yoda will say, "When gone am I, join Kanan and Ezra."

I like that they gave Threepio the silver leg from the original movie; pretty much all other stories taking place in that timeframe fail to give him it.

Bad things :

- "Disneyfied" animation

- 3PO not dubbed by Tony Daniels

- different look for 3PO

- MORE Jedi - shouldn't OB1 and Yoda be the only surviving Jedi?

Author
Time

Is this the first time 3PO hasn't been dubbed by Daniels?

And I'm mildly OK with there being there being a couple Jedi who slip through the cracks. Maybe Ben and Yoda are the last of the classically trained knights, these others are just untrained people with Force powers filling in the void.

Star Wars Rebels: A Look Ahead

Hurumph. The script sounds awful and generic. Lines like "Helloooo Hyperspace!", "We're busted" and "You're good to go" were sentences I didn't want to hear in the Star Wars universe. More 1138 please... less 90210.

Anybody notice the use of the word "Padawan"? Sigh the PT rears it's ugly head already in the Disney universe. What's wrong with "Apprentice" anyway?

Finally do female characters have to put one hand on their hip and cock their heads to one side? Apparently they do.

Still the general OT vibe looks fun enough.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

So, other than the female pose thing, you're complaining about modern-audience-friendly dialogue and working within established continuity.

 Yes :p

I keep hearing this and I still have no idea what you people are talking about.

I'm also not convinced that it's not Daniels. I'll grant you that his voice sounds a little weird but it's still very close to Anthony Daniels voice.

Traditionally, whenever Anthony isn't available they tap Tom Kane to fill in and that just doesn't sound like Kane's Threepio. It's also about on par with Daniels performances on the Clone Wars. For which he always spoke softly for some reason.

Two new clips from SDCC!

"We're Even"

"Kanan vs. The Inquisitor"

I like the movement of the characters on the show so far. They look weighty and like they have momentum. So many times in The Clone Wars, characters just looked weightless, especially during their acrobatics.

I also feel like the dialogue is more "fresh" and snappier. More in line with the OT than we've seen for a bit. Ryan's gripes about certain lines are a bit unfair, because you can make a movie look like anything you want it to through dialogue choice in a trailer. Even the OT.

Also, after reviewing Tobar's examples and comparing them to the Rebels example, I feel like the Rebels voice could definitely be Tony. It's at least a pretty decent sound-alike, if not. Likely Tom Kane if anyone.

I'm also glad that Ezra's (admittedly stupid) little slingshot thing doesn't seem to do more than annoy stormtroopers. I was worried it would just outright take people down.

Really enjoying the look of the lasers, too. They look very old school with the orange or yellowish cores, and not like flying lightsabers. And the saber blades definitely have that hand-drawn OT feel and look more like rapiers than glowsticks. It's also really nice to hear the scream of TIE's again in a new medium.

The Inquisitor's upper teeth and his lightsaber annoy me, but those are minor gripes.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

They could've easily avoided the word "padawan" without contradicting the prequels.

But why? Why the irrational hatred of that word? I've never understood it.

Bricklayers have apprentices. Knights have squires. Monks have novices. Why can't telekinetic space samurai have padawans?

Here's the complete audio from the SDCC Rebels panel.

Some Highlights:

  • "After the Clone Wars, to the majority of the galaxy, the Jedi are traitors. Disappointments."
  • There are consequences whenever you pull out a lightsaber in this time period
  • there will be very few lightsaber fights.

I'm prepared to believe 2 out of 3 of those statements.

Ask Ryan McAvoy. He's the one who was complaining about it.

One has to wonder why "padawan" --  if it was such an important term in the Jedi lexicon -- was never used in the OT.

That aside, though, when it comes to prequelisms, "padawan" is probably the least offensive one, at least in my eyes. Still, I'd prefer it not to be used, especially in timeframes outside the PT.

Thank you for posting the videos from SDCC.  It's nice that they made their way online so fast.

Right now I can say that the Older Jedi and the young kid (padawan, apprentice whatever) are the worst things about this show from the clips they've shown.  They are bland and uninteresting.  Maybe they have some amazing backstory that will make us care but just from the clips they are blandly designed with no interesting personalities.

The inquisitor is bland also and uninteresting.  Maybe this show just isn't for my age group and is for kids.  Besides OT ships I don't see anything appealing about it so far.

I commend Rebels for avoiding the four-letter s-word.

"Padawan" is one of those SW terms, like "Sith," that's been around for ages and ages (specifically, since the 1974 rough draft) even though it's never actually mentioned in the OT.

Which probably means that somebody must have suggested to Lucas at one point that it sounded a bit silly. Rather like the story about Brian de Palma comparing "the Force of Others" (as it was called at the time) to "the Farts of Others." And Lucas, not yet having risen to a position where no one could tell him 'no,' acquiesced--for the moment.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. All the Force-users come off as bland as sawdust, especially the Inquisitor.

I guess bland Jedi/Dark Jedi/whatever are going to be a part of the franchise until Episode VII comes out and turns it all around (That's my hope, anyway.).

From what I've seen I like the style and simplicity of everything that is not character related. The backgrounds, the look of the vehicles etc.

But the characters and overall animation do not look good enough to me and I'm starting to be afraid of the stories too.

It's not the word "Padawan" so much, it's more that I was allowing myself the nieve dream that Disney-Star Wars was going to be a PT free universe. If "Padawan" is the worst thing we hear, then I'm okay with that.
