Been trying hard to get into movies lately, thanks to my girlfriend watching them around me and me (of course) getting sucked into them.

The Secret Window

The girlfriend picked up a couple Stephen King books on vacation (Cell and The Long Walk, both of which she found predictable and drawn-out), her first. I've admittedly never read any King myself, but I have seen The Shining, which I enjoyed.

Interestingly, Secret Window is a lot like The Shining. Johnny Depp plays an author in a secluded place who is found by a strange man that accosts him for stealing "his story". Kingian stuff happens, I had the twist nailed (more or less) at around the halfway mark, and the whole thing reminded me a lot of Alan Wake, which isn't shocking, considering Sam Lake's influences. King's stuff definitely has a "feel" to it.

I'll give it five-and-a-half out of ten balls.

Mean Girls

The girlfriend told me I had to watch it with her, as it is one of her "quotable movies". I liked it. As a non-highschooler, and not-girl I felt like it captured the whole experience well, especially a young woman's perspective. Lots more bus violence than I expected, though.

Six out of ten balls.

The Count of Monte Christo

This was one of those movies that I remember coming out, and it fast turned into one of those movies that I couldn't believe I hadn't seen. There are lots of those, movies where I remember it and think "oh yeah! why didn't I ever see that?".

It was a good movie. Did a fine job with the characters. Well-casted, with the likes of Jesus and Dumbledore (which led to many hilarious riffs on my part). Very enjoyable. Made me want to read Dumas.

Seven out of ten balls.

I feel like there were more, but perhaps not. I'm actually getting back into movies, so yay.
