Can I ask something:

I guess there aren't itunes versions (like the un-restored Sword in the Stone which was exquisite!) of the Jungle Book, Robin Hood, Aristocats, right?

or any other HD unrestored (with grain) Disney animation at itunes? or HDTV versions?

I see there is an HDTV version of Aristocats, but unfortunately it's not 4:3.

Here's a discussion of this thread on another forum: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/true-original-star-wars-trilogy-blu-rays-coming-in-2014-or-2015-from-disney.324294/page-7#post-9243527

FWIW, this is just a "Look what I found" post. I don't know enough to say whether or not I agree with Derek Gee, but I sure hope he's right about Snow White.

That's great :D

What's the difference between this version and the regular one?

Author

I thought the Region 2/4 DVDs were uncut, but judging by Dr. M's edit using TV footage I think only the Japanese was fully uncut/uncensored. Am I right?

Author

Yep, it's uncensored. I collect LDs, so I would've purchased this even if it were uncensored on DVD.

Back when "The Little Mermaid" had its second DVD release, there was much flak about its soundtrack.

How does the Blu-ray's audio compare to the other two DVD releases?

Well, essentially, there are 3 Digital re-mixes:

1st DVD(Gold): 1997 theatrical re-release 5.1 soundtrack. Considered by many as an excellent and respectful re-mix.

2nd DVD (Platinum): The DEHT 2006 5.1 mix (brrrr). A truly awful remix. Everything sounds out of phase, The vocals on the songs comes from all speakers with the same volume...just...no. Strangely enough, all dubs use the 1st re-mix and it is not available in English as an alternative (As was the case with other Platinum releases),

1st Bluray/3rd DVD (Diamond): 7.1 remix with 5.1 core. Better than the DEHT mix. Voices are clearer, and well separated. However, it seems it was mastered too loudly, and there is some mild, but noticeable distortion in the "big" moments. The original DS mix is not available (Once more, despite original mixes being available on other Diamond releases)

I uploaded an HDTV version on AMPS (Video and audio wise, is the same as the Platinum DVD) way before the BD came out which has synched Gold soundtrack with the DEHT mix as well, for all to compare.

There was talk of the DTS discs of the 1997 mix being available to be synched.

This, along with a PCM of the original Dolby Surround mix from the LD, will make for the best sounding custom BD.

Has anyone taken a look at the Japanese Peter Pan LD from 1985?

That would be pre-Lowry.  It SHOULD be close to the 1991 Laserdisc/1990 VHS releases, but you never know.

Just wanted to add, that there is an itunes 720p version of Saludos Amigos that is UNCUT too, and I guess it would be better than the version on the Walt and El Grupo DVD.

A friend checked when I told him.

The US iTunes has only the censored version, at 41:57.

The Canadian iTunes has 2 versions, one running 41:57 and another running 42:06. He wasn't able to check yet whether the 42:06 version was what we want. Looks like the difference is English vs. French.

UK, Ireland and NZ appear to only have the censored version as well.

My friend is wondering which iTunes store you saw an uncensored Saludos on, since he isn't finding it. :/

An iTunes sourced Web-DL (720p, 42:04) has been floating around for a year and a half. Apple or Disney must have changed the iTunes file on the last months like they did with The Sword In The Stone

Yes, I saw the 720p web rip.

Someone told me too, that the current itunes version is censored (and de-grained?).

So I guess too they must have changed it, and this is what we'll get in the Bluray, unfortunately!

Yeah, drf showed me a screenshot from what is currently on iTunes.  It's cleaned to hell and censored.  :(

Beauty and the Beast [spoRv] has been just released!

Now, as this thread is so looong, my memory lacks and I'm tired 'cause it's almost 3 a.m., may I ask what do you think about the following preservation? (maybe I asked before, but you know...)

  • 20,000 leagues under the sea - HDTV (OK, not animated, but still Disney, so...)
  • Aristocats - HDTV + LD audio track
  • Aladdin - HDTV + LD audio track
  • The Black Cauldron - HDTV
  • The Lion King - LD
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas - LD 1.66:1
  • Sword in the Stone - HDTV + LD audio track

I'm thinking about doing some, but with this I do no promises, just threw here few ideas to know IF each one worth a restoration project or not.

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

I found the old 1080p itunes rip of Sword in the Stone quite good.

Is the LD audio different/better?

I would be interested more in Lion King I think.

And that's because there were changes/errors in the DVD/BLuray.

Is the LD picture in good condition?

By the way, thank you again for BATB. I will try to make some room in my hard disc because I'm looking forward to it!!

edit: Oh, i also think that a film that would need a preservation desperately  would be Cinderella.

The DVD and BLuray are no good (the VHS has more detail), and a Laser Disc rip I downloaded wasn't very good either (I think it was Molly's?).

But I'm not sure if there are better sources..

Yes on all of them, but do put The Lion King on a low priority, as a 35mm may become available.

My favorite on your list is The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Quickly followed by The Sword in the Stone, my DVD of which has disappeared in suspicious circumstances.

I liked the SitS old HDTV version, but at didn't find it to have a LOT of detail above the DVD.  It does have the edge though.

Was 20k Leagues damaged by restoration?  I hadn't heard that.

Is the Aladdin HDTV prior to the Imax/Lowry changes?

I assume Black Cauldron is likely to be pretty similar to the DVD because there hasn't been a restoration IIRC.

Never seen an Aristocats HDTV version.  There have been a lot of bad versions of that film.
