Star Wars Prequels 35mm 4K Filmized Editions by Emanswfan (a WIP) — Page 18

So I'm thinking about using the HDTV rip of TPM as a main picture source as it still retains the grain of the image.  Then I would the HDTV coloring to the Bluray coloring, use "match grain" in AE to apply the correct film grain to the Bluray, and I would align the HDTV correctly over the Bluray and blend the two together so that most of the picture is the HDTV, with the edges being the Bluray, much like what Ady did to restore the uncropped shots in ESB:R using 35mm scans.

It seems like this would be the best way to retain all the desired detail in the image.

I wouldn't recommend that - for one, it could be really hard to correctly overlay the two sources and also, this is a DVD master from 2001 with HDTV compression on top of it, that we're talking about - it is pretty atrocious - lot of grain and not much detail - it has some benefits over the BD but over-all the BD is better and has more detail.

Hmm, okay you;re probably right, as i haven't even gotten to look at the HDTV version recently.

Check out this sample of Schorman's preservation (pretty much the highest quality of the DVD master available), the BD and a quick adjustment of the BD I made - the BD, while it quite obviously had much more detail before the scrubbing of the grain, still has more detail than the DVD master even after the DVNR.

 Nice, thanks for the comparison.

Just curious; why start with ROTS?

I don't know, it's just I feel that ROTS might be the simplest to work with of the 3 films, though actually TPM might be considered easier.  I guess I never real have had a specific reason why.

My bad, on the grain.

Here's the same shot with real anamorphic film grain scanned at 4K, I purchased recently.

IMHO it's still a lot of grain, and it noticeably hinders detail. I do really like this look overall, but I estimate the grain is stronger than necessary.

Those shots are intended for new work on the oldified versions, the theatrical recreation version has less grain, a more modern film look, and is 4K.  The oldified versions are just too unstable for me, to release yet.

Oh, my bad! I thought that was the 'regular' version.

No, it's my fault for probably not clarifying that well enough earlier.  I can post that shot in it's theatrical version as well.

Now THAT's improvement ;-)

the others were somewhat too "yellow" for my taste

I concur with the others, this image has the perfect blend of all elements. Before, the blue of the leather bench had turned too turquoise in the grading process.
I'm glued to this thread for any further progress! :)

Great work on that tweaked Blu-Ray shot also, Harmy.

This project is looking awesome, i've got a couple of questions :

Its just a color correction, or your going to edit something ?

Its going to be a dvd or a BD release ?

Any release date ?

How much % is done ?

I love the idea of this project.  Look forward to it!

Will this be based on the BD version of TPM?  While the CG Yoda isn't perfect, I hate that original puppet.

I think you should use the HDTV as the main source but swap out the Yoda scenes for the Bluray since there is far more interest in the CG yoda in TPM.

How was 4k produced out of just blu ray sizes ? im not technical minded but how can youget something that is small to be bigger but also make it better quality like you have ? Impressive .. but how ?

Improvements in compression and codecs mean you can get reasonable quality out of a 40gb 4K file, same way H.264 produces reasonable results for streaming at 4GB for 1080p.

I'm just going to say that I think I'll have the video track for ROTS start final rendering tomorrow.  I'm actually going on a trip for 8 days starting Friday.  I'll just let my computer run while I'm gone and come back with it finished.  Though I'll admit that I am still working on the deleted scenes to get the best quality (SD to 4K is a little much, LOL).

I've been silent cause I was just making final tweaks to the footage.  That said I'm still very confused on what to use for distribution.  Maybe MEGA?  I wish I could use MySpleen and torrent the files, but my ISP seems to be sensitive to those kinds of activities, even if they are legal by fair use.

So maybe by the end of summer, you'll at least have ROTS w/ deleted scenes.

But yeh, I'll have no access to the internet  for that time I'm gone, so I won't be able to update on anything.

Looking forward to it. The first fanedit I ever attempted was ROTS, but I had only made it to play on my ipod, so the quality was never that good. I'd love to recreate it using your version. I'm especially looking forward to AOTS though, since I feel that is the film that will benefit the most from your efforts.
