Ugh. The changes are so ingrained now, the nature of the original version is like a vague urban legend now, with people just assuming it couldn't be THAT different.
My 11-year-old son recently went on an overnight trip on a charter bus with the Boy Scouts. They watched the Special Edition trilogy on the bus's video screens. My son starts telling people "These are the wrong versions. Jabba's not supposed to be in Episode 4." Nobody knew what he was talking about, not even the adult (supposedly a huge fan) that brought the movies.
On the other hand, I have raised my son well :)
A while back, my works manager told me that his young son was now getting into Star Wars as he had seen the films on the television. He was thinking about buying him a box set. I was just like...."Yeah, good". I think my manager was stunned that I never carried on the conversation. I mean, what was I supposed to say? Directing him to any sort of box set is pointing to the SE versions. I can't support that.
