Ugh. The changes are so ingrained now, the nature of the original version is like a vague urban legend now, with people just assuming it couldn't be THAT different.

My 11-year-old son recently went on an overnight trip on a charter bus with the Boy Scouts. They watched the Special Edition trilogy on the bus's video screens. My son starts telling people "These are the wrong versions. Jabba's not supposed to be in Episode 4." Nobody knew what he was talking about, not even the adult (supposedly a huge fan) that brought the movies.

On the other hand, I have raised my son well :)

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Here's my random thought:

Star Wars is perfection because even the shitty parts make wish I lived there.

This is what happens after you become a zombie from drinking the Lucasfilm/Lucas Licensing Kool-Aid.

I don't see anything wrong with wanting to live in that universe. I sure wouldn't want to live in The Matrix for example.

Disney Imagineers are probably hard at work on how to immerse people in the SW universe. Much like how visitors to Universal Studios in Florida can run around in Harry Potter's world.

Where were you in '77?

A while back, my works manager told me that his young son was now getting into Star Wars as he had seen the films on the television. He was thinking about buying him a box set. I was just like...."Yeah, good". I think my manager was stunned that I never carried on the conversation. I mean, what was I supposed to say?  Directing him to any sort of box set is pointing to the SE versions. I can't support that.

Explain that they can't see you in the movie if they buy a box set!

Sad for you that you seem to feel the need to insult a fellow fan simply because we have differing view points.

Well you sorta opened yourself to it with the schizophrenic, cognitively dissonant doublethink you displayed.  "Star Wars" (by which you seem to mean not the movie, but everything with the trademark slapped on it) is "perfection" even though it has admitted "shitty parts"?  Seems to smack of epicyclical rationalization and apologism for a whole lot of what we on this board all know to be unforgivable Sins against Cinema.

Oh, I don't care if he feels that he needs to insult me. He can do that all he wants. No sweat off my ass. I just find it sad and pathetic on his part. And I make no apologies for the fuck ups in Star Wars. There are plenty, and I wish they weren't there. However, I have excepted them and moved past them, and unlike a lot of fans I don't work myself into a rage over the shit that should never have been there, and then declare them unforgivable sins against cinema. That's a little melodramatic in my opinion.

But I understand that many fans feel that way and that's fine. They have the right. And maybe if I'd been there in 77 I'd feel the same way. But I personally like the original trilogy, and the SE, the PT, the EU, and even the all despised Blu-ray box set. And there's a lot of shit in there. And I still love all of it. That's why I said it's perfection. If I can still love something with so many flaws then it has transcended those flaws and reached some level of perfection in my eyes. And if other fans don't agree that's fine. But seeing as how we're all fans of the same thing I see no reason for insulting each other just because we don't all see things the same.

And for the record, the Star Wars Saga I want will never be, so I've embraced what is. A very unpopular choice with most fans.

The only flaw that matters regarding Star Wars is the fact that we can't buy the original movies.  Most people here think that way, so you seem to be addressing a different forum.

We're not fans of the same thing, you and I, I am a fan of the original Star Wars trilogy in its unaltered form - if I had the choice of watching the BDs of Star Wars or staring at a blank wall for 6 hours, I'm pretty sure I'd choose the later. And I wasn't there in '77 either.

Where did I ever say that I wasn't a fan of the original Star Wars trilogy? I simply like all the versions where most fans liking stops at the OT. That's the only difference between us.

Well, Frink is right, this is all irrelevant, who's a fan of what - I don't want to watch the BDs and you do and you can and that is perfectly fine. I want to watch the original version in decent quality and I can't and neither can you and that is not fine at all.

It confused me at first too but I see now that they mean Star Wars - the film from 1977 - Special Edition. The BluRays also only say 1977, 1980 and 1983 - so when they were telling people it was the original, I'm sure they knew very well it wasn't but they knew that the event will sell out much easier if they say that it is definitely for sure the original 1977 version, only to then turn around once they're sold out and say that they meant the original movie from 1977 but it's the Special Edition of that movie.

I'm still quite curious about the DCP though - is it just created from the BD master, in which case it wouldn't exactly be a world premiere of anything, because those masters have been shown theatrically before.

Doesn't Fox still have distribution rights though? (At least for the first film.) Why is Disney even involved?

They've shown the "R2 Hiding Behind Rocks" master already?

I think so, I'm pretty sure there were DCP projections at the Star Wars Celebrations, so I assume they were showing those versions.

I think it's sad that such a badly drawn cover such as this

was allowed onto an officially-licensed product.

Seriously, this reminds me of a bad Photoshop job. Did the people who gave this cover their stamp of approval not recognize that the proportions of her face are too damn big for her head?

I didn't know K-9 had crossed over into the Star Wars universe.
