I'm not sure why everyone is talking about CGI.

Perhaps because a lot of people here don't like large amounts of CGI in live-action films, especially when those movies are follow-ups to earlier films which didn't use any/much CGI.

The Prequels were weaker films because of poor plot, dialogue, and directing.

And the CGI overkill certainly didn't help matters any.

CGI was still kind of new then so some shots looked way too cartoony, but by the time ROTS rolled around I thought the CGI looked great in that.

Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I utter loathe the CG in ROTS.

It's 2014, I'm sure that any CGI used will look great.

I'm sure it will -- if used in moderation and only to supplement the practical effects.

Only the usual suspects will make hay out of nearly three year old tweets.

The man is being hired to direct a movie, not run for political office. ;)

The way some people carry on, you'd think these people were running for office. :-)

 Absolutely!

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Arguably OT had as much CGI as it was available at the time. It wasn't that they refused to use it...

So the dude made a pretty good flick where all he could afford was models. I don't see why that makes him the Chosen One.

Kersh had never.made a SciFi flick before. Maybe they should look to odd picks like Debra Krenuk (Winters Bone) or Kary Fukanawa (Jane Eyre).

Glad to see the choice of directors so far. Lots of hope.

Since Star Wars isn't primarily sci-fi, it would probably be better if they chose directors who were used to directing other genres (genres that are part of Star Wars, anyway).

It fits with the hiring pattern for the films thus far. He's still a relatively young filmmaker with a passion for the genre and practical effects. Who is also an excellent director and writer.

I think he'd be great for the franchise.

I wonder if Lawrence Kasdan will help him write the script for Episode VIII?

How is it confirmed when it says a spokesperson for Disney declined to comment on Johnson's hiring?

Looper" writer-director Rian Johnson will write and direct "Star Wars: Episode VIII" and pen a treatment for Episode IX, a spokesperson for Johnson confirmed to The Times.

An unnamed spokesperson means it's confirmed?  It's likely true, but until Lucasfilm/Disney release the information, it isn't official or confirmed.  I'm surprised a spokesperson would actually comment on the issue before Lucasfilm/Disney.  Wouldn't that violate some sort of agreement?

You're right. Not posting that was probably a much better idea than risking the marginal chance of a fake spokesperson.

I'm one of those odd people that don't care one way or the other how the effects are done. CGI or models, if it looks good who cares. Eps 1&2 had some problems with the CGI but still looked okay. I agree with you that the CGI in ROTS looked pretty damn good. I have no doubts that visually this Star Wars trilogy will look the best.

"IX" is the roman numeral for "9". And it will be out sometime after VIII/8.

I'm not sure I want to say the CGI looks good anymore (at the time maybe), but there are a lot of shots in ROTS, that a next-gen gaming console (ps4, xbox one, wii u) can easily beat.  Even TCW had more detailed digital characters than the digital doubles used in certain shots.

Definitely not as good today as it was then. But that's how it always goes. Still think ROTS looks decent enough, though. I'm expecting these new films to blow me away visually, and hopefully with the story as well.

I would say I prefer model based SFX. But I really couldn't care less about how the SFX is made. I am more worried about visual design of objects and environment rather than how it is then realised.

If the storyline and characters are appealing then I will like it whether it is a video game, book or film.
