DOOM: knee deep in the edit. (* unfinished project *) — Page 4

First time poster, I registered after reading this entire thread. I was just curious, has this project died out? I notice the last post was over a year ago.

It's a damn shame if it is dead, because this looked very cool.

fear not, I have some big things planned for the edit. I have a few projects I'm working on and not a lot of free time...progress crawls ahead.

Thought that i'd add some ideas of a couple of places you might be able to take some footage to help assist in your edits.

Mission to Mars (2000) - Good exterior shots of Mars, a good Martian storm effect with a worm-tunnel. Some good space station stuff that might be of use.

Red Planet (2000) - Features some good Martian Exterior shots. Some bits of the ship interior might be of use too.

Total Recall (1990) - Ditto. Including some shots that might stand in for "Mars City" type of shots. (Literally the City on Mars). There's also a nice shot of Phobos and Deimos in there which could help out with this.

Space Above and Beyond (TV Show, early 90's). The first episode features a section on Mars with soldiers in space suits. One shot features Phobos and Deimos in the background. There's also plenty of shots of Earth space craft which could be of use.

A movie by the name of "Minotaur" (It was a Sci Fi Channel original many years ago, 2001 or 2003 I think) features a few CGI shots of a nice demonic looking beasty. Not exactly sure if this would be of any use, could be used as an idea-generator for the Cyberdemon.

Hellboy (2004) - Some hellish imagery here and there. A few shots of labs and things that might give some ambient stuff. The shots of the big-bad dark God thing might work for some "Visions of Hell" type bites in quick splices.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) - It's running zombies in the city streets might work for some of your ending ideas.

Resident Evil (2002) - For the same as DOTD 2004. It features a few shots near the end which could help with this. Also some of the shots of the Umbrella guys in the Hive might give you some additional shots to work with for the RRTS, and it's also got a very similar color grading to start from.

Event Horizon (1997) - Some of the establishing shots of the space craft including exterior and interior might be of use. Some of the audio effects might also help push the demonic edge of things.

Moon (2009) - Has some good shots of a Lunar surface landscape, could be useful for the Stahl flashbacks you were talking about.

Sunshine (2007?) - Features some good ship interior shots, and some shots of the sun up close are pretty Hellish (These were used in a fan edit of Event Horizon to similar effect. "Killer Horizon" I believe.)

Outland (1987) - Some very good interior and exterior outpost stuff, could, again, be used to facilitate the Stahl flashbacks you were talking about previously.

One thought on the ARK transport sequence. Might I suggest using the DOOM 3 Hell-throat shot? The one you see when using the teleporters in that game? Maybe just color adjust it to have a green tint like the rest of the ARK effect? It'd be a cool way to tie the visuals of the game into the movie more directly (And that shot in the game was always freaky as... Hell.)

Another thought I had, IMP Fire Balls. I was thinking it would be kinda cool if either the "Carmack Imp" or the "Sewer Imp" could throw a fireball? I know this one is a bit tricky given it requires new CGI to be added to the shots, but I think it could be done, and at least give the creatures a bit more doomness.

This one is pretty much instana-discard, but I thought i'd throw it out there as another idea to play with. It would require some really smart editing tricks would be to have the marines storm into the holding cell, not the bathroom, and have Sarge actually blast The Baron (after it has killed Destroyer.) (You could actually have Portman getting killed in the midst of this chaos as was originally intended in the script and nobody noticing until they collect the bodies.)

Again, its your project, just thought i'd throw out some fresh perspective and some ideas i've had watching the film from time to time. (I actually did re-edit a couple bits of DOOM at one point using Red Planet footage. Basically making it look like the RRTS guys came in on a dropship and were taking a train to Mars City instead of the Helicopter.)

hey, that's cool. I welcome ideas and suggestions.I really should update the thread with the current state of progress. The teleporter idea you suggest is very close to what I have - lifting and tweaking footage from Stargate. I've looked at a lot of those films and a lot of others for footage and ideas..

I had an additional thought. This is something you've already talked about previously, but I thought i'd throw it out there. You were showing off some concepts of how you were generally going to shift the film away from the stock-we're-ripping-off-James-Camereon-blue that the film has throughout it, and I was thinking that as the story goes on, particularly in the third chapter you have in mind, if the reds and flesh tones were amped up and the blues and greens dialed down. This would give the entire final section a much more hellish visual look.

Hello, this edit has been cancelled? :(

Not by a long shot.

I just don't have a lot of free time to spend on it and I am working on some ideas that take a lot of planning.

I'm working on a secondary story that would seem unrelated at first but eventually be revealed as a direct prequel. This will hopefully be done in a comic book style combined with classic doom music and sound effects.

This allows me to come up with alternate explanations for things [like how C24 works] as well as adding a lot of references to the early games.

I intend to skew the story back towards 'invasion from hell' rather than 'science project gone bad'.

Wow, it's amazing that you continue with this.

Greetings from Argentina (I'm a fan of your project) and I expect further progress soon. : D
