Damn, why do I have to be broke when stuff like this happens? ;)

I really hope this can happen, as nothing else is going to be like an Italian IB. If it does get screened, the easiest way to check for which version it is is to look for some of the scenes cut from the US/International version.  (Blondie/Tuco extra scenes in the desert and stagecoach, Angel Eyes at the Confederate fort, Blondie/Angel Eyes at campsite etc.) These should all be present in an Italian print, with the exception of the grotto scene which was reputedly only at the premiere before it was dropped.

Why the fuck is it so hard to include mono? Why? Do they think we're stupid and won't notice a downmix? Seriously, it's like every fucking Hong Kong release. How hard can it be to include the mono?

It is outright incomprehensible. I do hate all of the new gunshots, they just feel wrong. As does the "mono track restoration" credit.

PS: my mono track project *for the 4K version is completed. After testing it by watching I will open a topic especially for it.

* Sourced from uncompressed PCM of the Theatrical LD, extended scenes from the MGM 4K mono downmix and the German DTS-HDMA with original sound effects from the same. Plus, some extensive synching.

That is fantastic news TheHutt, great job!

When I finish regrading the 4k remastered transfer and we add your mono track to the mix, we're going to make a lot of people very happy. :)

The new transfer overdoes it with the timing, but the idea is at least in the right place....if this were a fan edit and not a supposed restoration.

There is a reason why restorations are not timed to match IB prints. They are NOT a true reference as each print can vary from each lab in each country.

And this disc overdoes it. It has the warm feel of the Italian transfers of the first two films and then goes way beyond that in the digital domain. It's as if you sat there and cooked the over-bright MGM extended 35mm for hours upon hours.

And what did they use for 4K scanning? The restored MGM source?, the o-neg?, the MGM held source, presumably the United Artists held neg? or an Italian source?

Who knows? where's the information? Why doesn't somebody involved say, hey guys-here's what we did and with what.

Here we get the usual MGM mono downmix of a 5.1 re-purposed track. And unlike the old discs where the Italian mono was at least intact, we get the restored German mono instead. It at least sounds very good, but unfortunately being another foreign dub has different levels of effects, music and dialogue throughout.

Back to the freaking drawing board. WTF goes on at MGM/Fox when they do all this stuff? I'd be far happier with battered 35mm from the archive scanned at 2K and dumped on a BD-50.

I'm doing what I can working on this 4k remaster though, slowly improving (I hope) my settings.

 kingkong,

My apologies for the multiple requests but I'd really like to see how your regrade affects the greenish background of the 4K screenshot:

No worries, I'm happy to oblige. Here are some screencap comparisons that I posted on blu-ray.com between the 4k release and my latest regrade settings:

I wish everyone involved the best of luck obtaining this treasure. :)

As for my mono restoration project, I started an own thread for this.

Obtaining what treasure TheHutt? You're not really making much sense.

The print from Italy, of course.

Ah, okay. Just wish I could do more to help with obtaining that.

Looks great!

I'm pleased to see that your settings also colour correct the background of the opening credits.

I was skimming the various home video formats I have of this film (laserdisc, DVD, BD) and I'm convinced the scene below is not supposed to look like it does on the 4K. It's way too blue.

For instance, the strong blue glow of the horse and around the windows of the building in the background is not present in any of the previous releases.

Once again the IB tech print would be invaluable here. Let's obtain that treasure!

Just wondering, is kk650's recolored version going to include TheHutt's mono mix? If not, I can mux myself.

I'll also see about editing the film to remove the added scenes. The scenes don't add much, and the elderly Wallach/Eastwood and van Cleef double is too distracting.

Has anyone utilized the German (or equivalent) Blu-rays for Fistful and FAFDM to release improved English versions?

For Fistful (remastered), one just needs to drop in the English opening credits to the movie. That release included both English 5.1 and original mono. It would still say "Fine" at the end though, but no big deal.

For FAFDM, it's the same MGM master but with two differences. It includes the opening text about bounty killers in German (easy to fix), and includes an added shot of Eastwood being punched in the face (making it the only uncut version of the movie). That release included English 5.1 and original mono.

If no one has done that, I was planning on completing those to go along with the recolored/re-monoed GBU.

I personally think that the Italian Blu-ray of For a Few Dollars More looks the best because of the better looking colours and has no over the top sharpening and edge enhancement like the German one has.

The way I see it to make the best version, you would add the English friendly opening and end credits from the regular MGM Blu-ray, the scene from the German Blu-ray that is not on any other release and the rest from the Italian Blu-ray with the original mono.

MGM went to the trouble of reissuing the trilogy with the remastered GBU, but didn't bother to get the rights to the much-improved remaster of Fistful of Dollars. The one included in the set is awful - zoomed/cropped, bad color and no fine detail.

I've compared the Italian and German BDs for FAFDM. The German version looks just slightly better to me.

Fistful of dollars is also available, I wish we had a better way to crowdfund for prints!

It looks like The Good The Bad and The Ugly print will be going ahead, anyone that can help cover the shipping fees, please feel free to do so :)

I just want to make sure before we pull the trigger so to speak that everyone is aware that even with the print scanned at 4K, the BD will probably have more true detail, and probably a wider dynamic range than the print, and that the print has the Italian mono soundtrack as far as I know. And even a great print of this age will have scratches and some emulsion lines and some splices.

What the print will bring us is as close to the true colour timing and framing of the film as we are ever likely to get.

To me though, it's greatest benefit will be to be able to regrade the BD to match the theatrical release.
