^Looks almost violet in that shot. I suppose it's just the colour of the sky bleeding through the blade, though (*sigh*).

Was reading another interview Dave did for Nerdist and then this awesomeness came up:
As an original fan, if you just see a TIE fighter scream across the screen – you haven’t seen that since probably ’96 on a screen of any kind unless you’re watching it at home and it’s never been new. I think we have that to offer. Joel Aron, my VFX lead, has done an amazing job at matching the original effects. Something I’ll talk about – I don’t know if I've told anyone this, so this might be somewhat exclusive: We had the lightsaber rendered – the effect you’ll see in this show, Joel Aron and I very consciously decided to make it like what you saw in the ’70s. And they changed it in updated editions. The blade is a lot steadier in the re-releases and in the prequels. In fact, the blades in the prequels actually are wide and then they taper to a very specific sword point. The lightsabers that we’re putting in Star Wars Rebels are very much the long thin slender blade that is just more like a fencing rapier. Much more like that.
And they oscillate. They actually quiver. Joel found the original guy that did the original effect, rotoed it and everything, because it was on a rod that spun. If you look at really old, original footage of Luke’s lightsaber when he turns it on, it kind of almost goes like that [waves hand] and flickers. That really motivates the humming sound of the lightsaber and how it fluctuates when it moves. Joel’s recreated that really well.
Something else, we put in the old kind of yellow-green flash contacts when the sabers hit in the old movies that weren't as present in the new ones. We've gone very retro with our effects package for Rebels. I think old fans will like that, new fans won’t even know the difference. But yes, it’s always a big consideration. For a lot of kids, Rebels will be their introduction [to Star Wars]. It’s exciting, and it’s a huge responsibility, because we want to set things up well for everything that’s going to come.
While that sounds extremely awesome, we're talking about a series called Rebels. I kind of wished they would avoid the lightsaber stuff and would go on a more grittier (for a kids show anyways) blaster route. But I guess it's full of lightsaber fights, too, that seems to be an easy way out always.
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.
That's all very well. But what really counts is the story, not retro visuals!
Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Huh.
and holy mother of dragons, it would have been awesome if this had been hand animated and looked like this...
VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Yeah I remember seeing that too, probably an early promotional image. Here's the blade as it appears in the new trailer:

Awesome interviews, Tobar. They lose me a bit now and then with some updates, then they get me right back with others. Very exciting to see where we go from here.
Keep Circulating the Tapes.

The sad thing about this show is that the clones in TCW look more like Stormtroopers than the Stormtroopers in this.
Uh huh...
When is the show supposed to start?
Fall of this year.
Thanks.

The only stormtroopers with hero proportions are the ones in ROTJ. I'd say that AOTC clonetroopers have more or less the proportions of ANH and ESB stormtroopers, but ROTS clones definetely establish a leap backwards when put next to ANH stormies.
Doesn't anybody in the galaxy notice that both the Empire and the Separatists have warriors running around with red lightsabers? Why doesn't anybody suspect a connection?
It'd be nice to think that people don't take lightsaber colours into consideration because lightsaber colours don't really mean anything or indicate the wielder's affiliation, but I know that's not likely to be the case.

Agreed, so much. I always liked that in the McQuarrie paintings Vader's saber was blue and Deak Starkiller's was yellow.

Also agreed so much. Are you the same ATMachine that replied to my lightsbaber color thread on TFN?
Yeah, I have a foot in both puddles, as it were.
If you're curious, I did update that TFN post with more info about the green saber in ROTJ.

Actually, I think that's sort of how it is seen by most people in the GFFA. I remember in TCW, it was assumed by a victim of Maul and his brother that they were Jedi judging merely from the fact that they wielded lightsabers. A bunch of space pirates made the same assumption.
^I saw that same episode. I only wish most SW fans in the real world shared the same outlook.
There's still hope. Lucas isn't involved anymore, so I think we'll be seeing more colorful sabers sooner or later.
Hell, Dave Filoni out and out defied Lucas by the end of TCW by giving both his waifu and the Jedi guards yellow lightsabers.
French trailer shot off a movie screen with a major cameo spoiler...
Where were you in '77?
I am very optimistic about this toon.
I am what all Jedi fear to become, and what all Sith wish to be. A GOD!
