Star Wars: One Death Star to Rule Them All (6 become 1) (* unfinished project *) — Page 2

Well, it seems that this project is going to take a lot longer than I had hoped.  I just got a new job which pays a lot more than my old one, but unfortunately I will be working about 13 hours a day, 5 days a week. This will leave me a lot less time for my family, let alone any extra projects such as this. I will continue to work on it when I have time, but I suddenly have about 25 hours less free time per week.

Great ideas around here.

When I did my 4h40 long silent edit (2 parts) I wanted to stay as close as I could from the original story and I did not care much about the lenght of the scenes I cuted because I knew the music will blend them well together.

IMO the most difficult thing in a 3 hours "normal movie" will be to keep the scenes long enough so they will not seam too rushed. The main characters needs time to speak so a lot of second characters will have to shut their mouth! I think it has to be an Anakin/Vader movie, so you'll have to make heartbreaking things like turning Han Solo into a quite minor character (screentime-wise).

And another thing that should be kept in mind: the age of the actors... Ford did look older in Jedi than in ANH, and so the others. You can't put Solo helping Luke to destroy the Death Star at the end of the movie if you already used ROTJ footage of him earlier in the movie for exemple.

But I'm sure you already thought about all of this. Just few thoughts as I was reading this thread.

You could swap Endor with Alderaan and Yavin with Endor.

It would mean removing the Falcon but here goes.

Dooku and the seperatists were the beginning of the rebel alliance.

They give the founders of the Alliance the plans.

The rebels try to defend Alderaan against the uncomplete Death Star but fall into a trap and get caught between it and the Imperial fleet.

They take massive losses and Alderaan is destroyed.

They retreat to their rebel base to plan a second attack.

Studying the plans they find a weakness in the station.

The Imperials track them to their base in the polar regions of Endoth.

They launch a ground assault apparantly driving them off the planet but this is a ruse to lure the completed station into the system to pick off their fleet.

The Rebels leave a small group of fighters which attacks the station's weak spot ( a large vent which leads the main generator ).

Luke doesn't blow up a Death Star (he's too busy confronting the Emperor and his father).

But he does take part in the defence of Endoth and goes off to face Vader.

Some good ideas there.

I was planning on completely removing Yavin, and definately only one Death Star battle, which Luke would not participate in due to his facing Vader and the Emperor. (So Luke's 'great piloting' may end up being reduced to being shot down on Hoth ;)

You could still use Luke as part of the failed attack on the uncompleted DS, just have his 'great piloting skills' save him from 'getting a little cooked back there' as the fleet is escaping with their asses whipped. Of course, he wouldn't really get his medal either seeing as he didn't destroy the DS, so it'll be interesting to see how you resolve the medal ceremony - if there is one.

Looking forward to seeing this release. Good luck!

It won't be done for some time, due to my nearly non-existant free time. I haven't really touched it since October.

However, my lack of time has increased my resolve to see it through to the end, since it would be a good way to have a Star Wars marathon without taking up 12 hours.

As stated before, I do have most of ANH and TPM chopped up and ready to be stitched together.

How about this for a darker ending.....

Whatever you do in the lead up, consider this as an alternate ending.

The planet that the DS is orbiting in ROTJ is Kashyyk. The rebel fortress is there. No ewoks, just wookiees (as GL first supposedly envisioned). All ground battle scenes that dont have ewoks (if possible) are spliced with the Kashyyk scenes from ROTS - obviously you cant use yoda etc. Han, Leia and Chewie are down there, trying to destroy the communications satellite dish that will lead the empires ground forces to the rebel fortress and kill the rebellion and all good and right people in the galaxy. Which becomes moot when......

When Luke is on the DS, and Palpatine says "Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational Battle Station!".....they fire and BOOOOOM! The planet below is destroyed! Cut to Nien-numb's shocked face, and Ackbar's falling into his chair, sinking his head. Luke grabs his saber after ages of inner conflict and whining and tries to cut the Emperor in two, now he's got a proper motive, and leading into the final fight. (Palpatine's just destroyed Luke's friends, sister, and also wiped out an entire legion of His own ground troops. The Greater Good, and all that. But I digress.)

When Luke's about to finish vader and turn to the dark side, you could intercut it with the scene from ROTS with anakin. Top-notch editing and some clever timing could intercut the two scenes very well, even coinciding the fall of Mace Windu with the fall of palpatine. All hell breaks loose in space, one of the DS lasers destroys Home One, the battle rages, culminating eventually in the fortuitous destruction of the DS. One-all. But the empire's fleet and the rebels are massively depleted. And, crucially, Han, Leia, Chewie are all dead, and the droids are vaporised.

With most of the rest of the rebels dead, luke still escapes the DS with Vader's body, returns to Tatooine, holds the lone Jedi funeral. The force ghosts of Ben, Yoda, and Anakin appear. Maybe include a shot of the Falcon returning to Bespin. Fade out on Luke looking at the (solemn, not smiling) Ghosts and beyond, to the twin suns?

Interesting idea that only really came to me this evening, and it would be a true darker end to the saga.

I assure you we are quite safe from your friends here

I thought about this idea independently of you (and I was disappointed when I found out that someone else has thought this before), but somewhat in a different way (I hate the OT and love the PT): as a worthy sequel of ROTS, combining together the best moments of the OT (with a single Death Star) to form a coherent story (without the PT flashbacks that you envisioned). A possible title would have been 'Episode IV: Threat of the Death Star'.

Any news about this interesting alternate universe edit idea?

With all my thinking about 3 Death Stars, I'd almost forgot about the opposite direction.

I've finally somewhat lit a fire under me bum to work on this some more. I was using Womble, which worked mostly fine for my purposes, but was very disappointed in its lack of feathering on the wipes (which left any attempt at a wipe looking amateurish at best). That, combined with the fact that my job takes up 13 hours a day, 5 days a week led to little progress.

But having recently obtained myself some Sony Vegas, it looks like the feathered wipe issue is solved. I've heard good things about 'what happens in Vegas' and at first glance it seems to allow more manipulation of 5.1 audio.

So I'm gonna try to pick this up again.

I've been working a bit on streamlining the footage I'm using from ANH and TPM right now.  "There's one, set for stun!" - ZAP - "She'll be alright, Inform Lord Vader we have a prisoner." --- Hmm, you set for stun, so do you really need to say she'll be alright?  No?  Delete!  Trimming that line only saved me 2 seconds, but given enough instances of redundant and unnecessary dialogue over 6 movies it adds up quick. Some major trimming of the fat must be done to make this watchable in one sitting. I may also, if it ends up having to be split over 2 DVD's, start the 2nd disc with the intermission from 2001: A Space Oddesey. Why? Just a foolish whim. I'm already using the 20th Century Fox logo from the Daredevil DVD (with the narrator describing what is showing up on screen.)  I have some eccentric tendencies.

I've also been toying with an idea I've seen in an Episode III edit. Adding a few disembodied lines from Qui-Gon. Not sure if it'll work so I'll make a quick rough version to test it, but I thought I could add a tiny bit to Yoda's hut in the ESB section. When Yoda is making excuses and Obi-Wan says Luke will learn patience, perhaps Qui Gon could chime in with "He is headstrong, but I foresee he will become a great Jedi Knight" - peiced together with lines that will be skipped over from elsewhere.  Just a thought, and again I'd have to see it in context to judge if it fits into the flow of the movie up to that point.

One last thing for today; here's a low-res preview of the front of the DVD cover I whipped up.

(it seems funny referring to AOTC and ROTS af 'films' when they were shot digitally :)

There is nothing wrong with calling 100% digital movies, films. They are still under the category of films, but in AOTC and ROTS case, I know what you mean, I'd prefer to call them video games.

so this project is on hold ?

too bad, I really like the idea editing all into one movie - be it only OT or even OT+PT

Wow, was that 5 years ago already?

Um, yeah... I have a hard time finishing projects that I start. I only had 1 kid when I started that... now I have 3. And I thought time to myself was hard to come by back then!

Anyway, this project has sort of evolved into more of a spoof movie. I'm much more skilled in the realm of foolishness than in serious projects. I still have lots of ideas and a little bit of finished material. I'm going with the premise that a space virus is spreading and causing irrational behavior, using mainly the 3 originals with a tad bit of prequel and a smidge of outside material, rearranging dialog and editing scenes into madness.

Obi-wan is determined to teach Luke the dark side but has a tendency to wander off without warning. Meanwhile the emperor has been wasting resources building a giant weapon capable of minor collateral damage. A certain someone from a certain other sci-fi classic will make a cameo.

I am still determined to finish SOMETHING eventually, but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up by guessing on a release date ballpark figure.

"Will he finish what he begins?"

We shall see, Yoda. We shall see...
